Actually most of us don’t. I think it originated with the Celts and of course from Britain it was passed on in American culture. Lately they’ve started to organise Halloween parties in the Netherlands, you know, dressing up and getting pissed but there’s no trick or treating. We do burn candles for the dead on All Hallows’ Eve.
I had one girl last year ringing my bell for trick or treat and I had to explain to her that we don’t do that at Halloween (her parents are from Tibet).
We have a feast on 11-11 called Sint Maarten where children go through the neighbourhood with lights and sing songs for a treat, no tricks though.
