Can't seem to master this recipe. Help?

I also have double apple. I’ve made a couple different recipes trying to get something like a caramel apple or caramel apple cake but this isn’t very flavorful it seems like. It doesn’t really have much of a caramel or apple taste, and I’m not sure how that’s even possible. Ideally I want a thick caramel sweetness and a tartness of apple. Any ideas on how to improve this?
