N.E.T Creations and Reviews (Naturally Extracted Tobaccos or Teas)

For anybody that still buys N.E.T’s there’s a Black Note sale on at Health Cabin.

I’ve had some of that before I started making my own and it is very good quality N.E.T.

Humm, at USD $0.75 / per ml the prices are outrageous. Make your own. Additionally, I have commented elsewhere about some concerns I have with these type of ‘boutiques NETS’: Here is a brief summary of my concerns: I am not singling out Black Note, as all boutique vendors have some or all of these issues:

  • Commercial vendors of NETs, like what you can buy online, or at selected vape shops have a few issues One is that, almost without exception the ‘ready to vape’ NETs that these folks offer is very weak in flavor profile strength for true MTL vaping.

  • The other major issue is that they are marketed with obscure and meaningless names that give no clue to what the base tobacco was that they used to make the extraction. Black Note is the biggest offender here. To effectively work with NETs you need very complete descriptions of the tobaccos used and a complete description of the vaping flavor profile. To see how a description listing should be done see my blog here. or see tobacco reviews such as tobaccoreviewsdotcom

  • Of the dozens of commercial companies that are offering ‘tobacco vapes’ it is unclear that any of those products are 100% tobacco leaf macerations. Most use commercially made “extractions” from large industrial producers like this..

These are all valid points. However, for me the Black Note serie was what got me into N.E.T’s in the first place.
@Kinnikinnick and I both got a box send over for review, I got mine through the lobbying of @Kinnikinnick actually.

We both decided we liked it and also both decided it was expensive and started to make our own.
This deal might well be the start for someone else.
Jumping into N.E.T’s can be pretty daunting, especially if you don’t know whether you even like them or not.

For “old hat” DIY NET heads like us, @50YearsOfCigars, the idea of paying $.50 to $1 per ml for something we can easily make ourselves seems silly. But, there was a day when I wasn’t even aware I could make my own eliquid, synthetic or NET… period. I’m sure there are folks that will never take the plunge to DIY their own juice. For them, manufacturers of NET liquid such as Black Note, is one of their few avenues to experience a tobacco derived juice.

I can vouch that many of the Black Note liquids could satisfy the desires of someone looking for a tobacco based juice. Plus, their NET filtering process is much more refined than ours. This was fairly evident to me when coil gunking issues with BN liquids was much, much lower than that of other manufacturers or my own NET. So, when folks are vaping BN juice in popular premade coil tanks/clearomizers, they aren’t going to be pissed off that they can’t vape more than 2ml worth of juice without changing out their coil.

If I had the expendable cash, wasn’t into the whole DIY juice thing, and was looking for a NET tobacco juice… Black Note would most likely be high on my list as a NET vendor.

I guess I will question that point…

Not trying to be argumentative, just playing the devils advocate here: but I suspect Black Note is just another hexane extracted product from the likes of:
Heavy hitter players like McCormick which have long since bought out the major Italian flavor manufacturers like Giotti… Of course, there is really no argument here but, “Black Note” is a re-packaged product from Italy. To me its major appeal is that it is wrapped in outrageous over the top professionally designed art work. I would pay $20 bucks for the art work, but the product, not so much.

If it really does “not gunk” that is a give away that the extraction is made via a professional industrial flavoring extraction process. You can filter real PG nets down to -.20 micron and it will not remove the “gunk” (*) : which is a result of natural sugars. To keep the ‘flavor’ and leave behind the ‘gunk’ (sugars) you need to do it chemically via precise extraction methods that are very familiar and in use as part of standard industrial flavoring factories.

(*) You can try this yourself as a $12 kitchen experiment with one of these:

Syringe Filter, Membrane Solutions Lab Supply Sterile Filter PES, 0.22 micron Pore Size, 33mm Diameter, Pack of 10
Membrane Solutions Lab Supply

PS: I am not saying Black Note is not "NET’… at least it is made from tobacco leaf back at the start… it is just a question of how you use the word NET… You know me, always bitchin’ about words -:grinning:

From what I read on their site, they cold macerate the tobacco in PG/VG for 6 weeks. Where they go from there, I have no clue. Just for giggles, I’ll give them an email and see if they will shed some light on their process. My guess is they’ll be a little tight lipped on that. :smirk:

wow! thank you so much for this! NOW IM OFF TO FIND AN AEROPRESS!

:hugs: … easy and inexpensive way to filter small batch concentrates, for sure. Good luck in your endeavors.

Documented a few of my most recent NET steeps. Heres some Solani Virigina Flake and Sutliff Molto Dolce.

One ounce of tabaccer, then properly shredded/chopped.

Topped up with PG and more tobacco til it was all in there.

Only got this pic of the Molto Dolce. Just filled the jar up the same way.

I’ve got maybe 6-8 NETs going at the moment. Got a lot of my info from this thread. Lot of great stuff in here. Doing cold steep in PG. No heat at all. Picked up a cheap pipe to sample some of these to have a reference point and so far the Solani Aged Burley Flake is my fav as far as smoking it. I’m sure it will make a wonderful NET, as several others have said.

I have a couple that have been steeping for over 2 months now, so I need to get around to actually filtering them. I have 2.5 micron filters, but I still need an Aeropress.

Sampled some Peter Stokkeye Dark Fired at one month, mixed at 10%, and I immediately knew I was going to continue making NETs. It was downright fantastic.

From personal experience, it will indeed! :sunglasses: Over time, I have gravitated more towards Burley blends than any other and IMO this tobacco is pretty much is at the top of the Burley class. C&D Haunted Bookshop is next in line, though it has other leaf included… still a very enjoyable Burley blend.

That needs to be on your Santa list!

Success can lead to the addiction of finding that next tobacco to macerate.

Filtered some Brazilian Arapiraca Filler from Leaf Only last night and doing some sampling right now. Did 3 months in PG with a 12 hour heat at the beginning. Mixed at 15%, 60/40 PG/VG, Vaping it in my Berserker Mini at 13 watts.

Mellow and smooth flavor. Not too complex. Has a bit of spice to it. Seems like it’s begging to be mixed with a nice, robust wrapper extract. I also tested it at 7% in a DTL RDA at around 30 watts and it was almost begging me to mix it in a hybrid recipe, so I did a real simple one. I did:

  • 5% Brazilian Arapiraca Filler

  • 3% CT Havana Prime

  • 2.5% FW Hazelnut

It was really good. I think I’ll mix that up in a 30 ml to rock in my daily RTA and see how long the coils last without some super gunk.

hey just an update—aeropress is amazing! seriously, it’s essentially the same as a real buchner funnel from college chemistry except with a new, simplified/cheaper technique. i LOVE it! one day i might even use it to make coffee :joy:

Good to hear you’re having success with filtering! :sunglasses:

So… whatcha got going through that Aeropress these days?

Filtered some Escudo Navy De Luxe today and mixed some up at 15%. Testing it out on my Siren 2 right now, and I have to say I am pretty impressed with it. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with VaPers- just what @Kinnikinnick sent me to try out, but this one is very pleasant. It’s really smooth, I imagine from the Virginia, and has a really strong tickle on the nose throughout the exhale, which I would reckon is the Perique. Very well balanced. I’m not really used to getting top notes like this from an NET. Crisp would probably be the best way to describe it. If you’re in to VaPers, I’d definitely give this one a shot.

I bought the tin back in October 2017, but didn’t get it steeping (in PG) until August of 2018. Gave it a 12 hour jump start in the crock pot and a hair over 4 months on the shelf. Have some McClelland 2015 Virginia Perique Flake that I got going at the same time that I’ll probably let sit for a little while longer since I’ve done a whole lot of filtering the last couple weeks and I need a break so I can catch up on testing all of them. If the McClelland turns out really good I’ll have to treat it like an Aged bottle of Scotch and only enjoy on special occasions since they closed up shop.

Anyone else have any experience with the Navy De Luxe? Or VaPers in general? I think they are just below Burley and Kentucky blends in my list of favorites now.

Va/Per mixes are my morning pleasure vapes. :yum: It’s nice to ease into the day, vaping something smooth with a cup of coffee.

That Escudo Navy De Luxe sound right up my alley to get my day started. A few of the ones which I’ve found very nice are:

H&H Aniversary Kake

C&D Bayou Morning Flake

C&D Exclusive

C&D Poplar Camp

So, yeah… love my Va/Pers!

It’ll probably taste awesome, just on account you can’t buy it anymore! :pensive: It’s sad when vendors close their doors or stop making certain blends. I ran into a similar issue with Tsuge Ryujin; found a nice sweet Latakia blend and… POOF! …it disappeared from the production line. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: But, on the bright side … the 100ml of Ryujin extract in reserve, will afford me 1000ml of finished juice in the future. :kissing_heart::dash:

Wish I had something of value to add to these comments on the Va/Per discussions, but I am a Burley type almost 100%. However, I do understand your comment on the lighter early morning vape, and always have a Kayfun Prime in the rotation with this:

Sample #49- H&H Virginia Spice Pipe Tobacco - Cigar leaf , Perique, Virginia - This is another blending inspiration from the expert hands of Russ Ouellette. Sweet and perfectly balanced with the light Virginias forward and a little note of Perique that is just right. I struggle to find the cigar leaf as a single note, but it is there and does provide a solid base as it is an important part of this light, sweet and easy to vape blend. Recommended as a ADV, and certainly also for the transitioning vaper to NETs

It is pretty “lite” if you know what I mean. By far all my Periques are much heavier Burley Blends, so I hesitate to list any of them here as it would drag this Va/Per discussion into the mud :grinning:

:grinning: I think adding the Virginia Spice to the discussion is valuable! It may not have the cigar kick that someone wants, but one can always add some other single leaf cigar extract to the mix; boost the cigar leaf goodness.

I found the GL Pease Robusto to have the same issue of not enough cigar leaf type flavor. I just add some Fronto leaf extract to the mix and balance things out to where I want it.

Yes ! and here is a great example of that special something to add !. I just finished and filtered this one after a 1 year extraction wait with multiple ultra-sonic bumps at months 7, 9, and 10. It was a long wait, but worth every second of it. This vape is such an authentic pure tobacco experience that i would not hesitate to use it as a poker chip to answer any dare from crusty old premium cigar smokers that hang out in smoke filled poker rooms.

I owe a big THANK YOU to @Kinnikinnick for sending me these leafs which he sourced from [leafonly.] He hit a winner here !

I have added it to my listing page at https://diy-net-samples.weebly.com/ with this descritption:

Sample** #52- Nicaraguan Lingero Long Filler - **Pure Leaf, Not a Blend, 1 Year extraction time.
A thicker and stronger long filler type, the Nicaraguan ligero is what provides the bold flavor and spice in premium cigars, even more so than other ligeros grown in other regions. This leaf is grown from the Criollo 98 tobacco seed, from the region of Jalapa. This remote region near Honduras is known for its humid microclimate, and sandy soil that is very similar to the Vuelta Abajo or Pinar del Rio region in Cuba. These soft, reddish colored leaves carry a sweet strength and aroma, and a smooth and elegant texture. The vape profile is very near to my extract of the finished cigar Jose Marti Nicaraguan, although lighter smoother and with distinct room filling top notes of spicy aromatic tobacco. Very authentic cigar only tobacco vape. Works well as a smooth and mild ADV or a mix component to add cigar aromatics. Recommended.

Glad you had success! :sunglasses: Your maceration technique and Father Time probably had a lot to do with the outcome.

@Kinnikinnick I have to say the Robusto GL Pease of yours you sent me I mixed a 60ml batch at 7% added 15drops of Cactus (Inawera) and a few drops of stevia (my mix), max vg. This turned out to be the best cigar tobacco mix ever. So good friend asked me when they got in my truck when did I start smoking cigars again. Excellent NET creation sir
