I find that wiping with white vinegar works nicely on most glues , And when that fails, I try white spirit.
Oh! and thanks, guys , for the copious stream of ideas! (It;'s all making my head spin now

Not sure if you can get this stuff where you are but “Goo-be-Gone” works great for removing residue from stickers and labels.
I believe Walmart has it.

I don’t have many bottles I have to remove glue from anymore, but I always used a drop of frying oil from the kitchen (any oil will work) and a piece of paper towel.

OK …ok I have a confession. I was thinking about posting a pic, but decided No. I call it the “Bugger”. After years of peeling pesty glue I started accumulating an ever growing ball of residual glue. It’s grown kind of large, but works great to remove pesky residual glue …from anything …juice labels, price stickers. You just press it on and pull it off …and then it’s a tiny bit bigger. [cough] I hide it from the Ms, stuck behind a decorative cutting board in the kitchen. Sounds horrid but as it grew, so did it’s powers. Pretty sure there’s a screenplay eventually …after I mysteriously turn up missing. Title? The “BuggerMan” duh? Tagline? “Don’t Go Behind the Cutting Board!”

Should’ve asked you guys long ago, instead of beating brains out, trying to solve it for myself!
My issue was wanting smear-proof labels. not custom designs, so i didn’t even read that thread. There are a few other old label threads which I did read, but none really addressed my question, so far as I could see.
I do believe that labelling of bottles is quite a big enough topic to justify a few more specific thread titles! We surely shouldn’t have to take ancient threads off-topic, nor scratch around to see where they did go off-topic.
OP is outta who’s control, BTW?

I have been using a Brother P-Touch label maker (parting gift from a previous employer, along with a box of replacement tape, thanks old job). I think those super-fancy labels are actually pretty awesome but in the context of your original question, I have not had any issues with smearing or degradation of the labels so far after a couple years. I wish I had the budget and motivation for awesome looking labels but I don’t. I just want them a little cleaner looking than painter’s tape and a Sharpie (no offense, honest) with decent longevity, so I’m good with the P-Touch.
