hey there, this is my first post (and nothing to do with making juice?)
Depends on what you want to do with guitar. If you want to learn easy songs, check out Marty Scwartz on youtube, he seems like a pretty good teach, maybe a little slow… but he aims to the newer player. Look into Rocksmith. its like guitar hero but you use a real guitar (use a special 1/4" to usb cable) theres a huge amount of custom songs you can find to learn. The game also has arcade style games you play with the guitar, helps with picking, chord changes, etc.
You mentioned being a little clunky with chord changes, check out “the caged system” its based on cowboy chord shapes C-A-G-E-D, all of which can be barred and played up and down the neck.
Something that really helped me was to KNOW the notes of the strings, especially the 5th and 6th strings. I knew how to figure out which note I was on, but spend a little time just playing up and down the neck and saying out loud the note you are on… huge plus, you will KNOW what you are doing and gives you a much better idea of where to try to go next (noodling or writing)
oh and I would say the biggest thing you can do is sing along with your playing. I hate doing it, I used to have a Marshall half stack and HATED anyone listening to me play (even when I was playing a song I knew well) but there is something about hearing yourself, and feeling yourself sing (either just a tone or the note name) it helps incredibly with instinctively knowing where to put your fingers for a given note. Hard to explain… say you just came up with 2 or 3 notes of a cool new lick, in your head you know what the next note is but your fingers dont know what the note is… if you start singing along it will become more second nature.

Also look into ear training, intervals…a minor second sounds like Jaws, or Pink panther; major 2nd is happy birthday or frer jaques… this way you can start figuring out songs on your own. “dah duh… hmmm that sounds like twinkle twinkle little star (or starwars) that must be a perfect 5th!” you then know where the next note on the fretboard is

something that may sound stupid… stand up when you play! move around, feel the music

anyhow, good luck with your music, and sorry to ramble

Wow. Reading this thread has my head hurting! I love to play guitar even though i dont get to much since i got married, had kids, and work all the time lol. But i still like to pick up the axe and give her a pick or two. I dont understand half of what you guys were talking about. I started playing when tabs first came out, or shortly after and now thats how i “see” the music. Once i learne a few songs and figured out power chords i basically jammed out using chords i had learned from other peoples songs, kinda like how someone was talking about earlier. I always wanted to be a lead smashing shredder but i just cant do quick fluid notes. Heavy marches, groovy foot tapping beats, and sad little strums are my bread and butter though. I should watch this thread closely! You guys are smart!

In regards to using a pick, are you trying to learn how to strum or pick?

Being one who learned guitar using a pick to strum and pick, I prefer to use fingerstyle for strumming and picking. I only use a pick for certain strumming velocities and patterns or very fast picking. I am in much better control with my fingers. It’s one less apparatus between the guitar and myself. I can be much more expressive without a pick; however for shredding, I must use a pick.

I refer back to the beginning; what is your goal with the pick? What do you want to do with the pick that your fingers and nails can’t accomplish?

I like the tone your getting from your right hand. Your doing something right with that pick.
My philosophy has been, play the music your excited about, I mean if a piece of music moves you that’s the one you chase.
I’ve been chasing this one for over a year…

You already know the blues scale…your playing it on your funk 49 song. Many great songs have that scale in it. Subtract one note and you have the pentatonic, like others said above gotta learn that one.

I love Fur Elise, its one of the best tunes ever made imo. I tried playing it by ear but gave up after the first stanza or so. Nice job man and very nice axe!

Amazing man. Fur Elise is one of my favorite classical pieces. I can’t play it like you do. But I learned it in the first position on the neck years ago. It’s usually what I end up playing just before putting the guitar away. Off onto a tangent - Classical music usually has me desiring to listen to some John Williams…

I am still amazed every time I watch him play. If you guys have never watched the videos above do yourself a favor and put on some headphones and prepare to enjoys one of the worlds best guitar players. He is actually the best in my opinion.

I went back and listened to the songs I have recorded and shared here and wow - I am pretty bad LOL. I will try to get some updated stuff shared. Listening to my recordings helps me hear where I am screwing up

Thanks for the kind comments.

@rob62 It’s so Ironic…I was looking for a Guitar/midi solution for my studio. I scoured google for hours. Then on an ejuice forum I might have found it.
I need to spend more time with this (jam origins), poly is very impressive. But I’m getting a little extra latency with low single notes (free version). Thanks for sharing.

I just watched your vid again. You toss a harmonic in there too! I missed that yesterday because I was working on some images and wasn’t watching all of it. I have seen a few other people play Fur Elise but none add that.

I arranged (might not be right word) that piece on guitar before we had a computer. My intention was to let certain open notes ring out as long as possible…I do like how some other guys laid it out with a more vertical arpeggio, that could be played really fast. But I probably would of never posted it unless I was playing it a bit different, for better or worse LOL.
