Sprks' thoughts on the Smoant Cylon!

Ane i just bought a battlestar from last year because i thought it looked cool, lol. Fwiw though, its the bronze one with etchings that makes it look like alien technology to me. This cylon looks pretty too, love the leather looking ones.

Great review and now I’m tempted (again) :money_mouth_face:

I’ve been using the Smoant Cylon for about two weeks now, and I love it! I personally have only one issue with mine, if you can even call it that.

The body of mine, between the top and bottom of the mod, wiggles. It can clearly be replicated buy holding the mod in one hand and holding my atty then pushing left to right. At first I thought it was the 510 connector being loose. I eliminated that thought by grabbing the mods sides and the top of the mod where the 510 is secured by the four screws. Still wiggles.

I then took a micro bit to see if all the screws were tight, and they are. It may not be a long term issue, but it triggers my OCD.

Nice review. the Cylon has been on my wishlist for a long time, though it is an ever growing wishlist as I only rarely actually buy anything

As a TC user myself I also love when a reviewer actually test the TC and/or use TC mode themselves.

Love when reviewers go that “extra step” in looking at what’s inside. I only do it if a) it’s a POS or b) I loved it and now it’s not working and I MUST KNOW WHY!
You did a great write up on this and made me love SMOANT even more. My two Battlestars get daily use because they NEVER let me down. One of the most solid performing mods I own. I’d take a Smoant over a SMOK or Wismec any day of the week.
Awesome brother, just awesome. Thank you!

Interesting. Mine’s as solid as a rock. Sorry to hear about the state of yours though, and it’s a bit surprising, as well as unfortunate. Sorry to hear it (It’d bug me too).

There’s really only two (ok, 3) things I can think of offhand, and it sounds like you’ve covered one of them.

  1. The screws are loose (not sure if you meant you checked all seven on top, or just “all 4”) but you said you checked that…
  2. Perhaps the wrong size screws were grabbed, which left a slight bit of extra wiggle room.
  3. I’d be hard pressed to see this, but I imagine flukes happen… Perhaps the mold wasn’t completely filled on the under side of the lip on the top cap, and you’re missing metal, so there’s not a firm connection between the top cap and the main chassis.

At any rate, if you’ve only had it two weeks, I’d recommend contacting the supplier first, and see if they’ll make it right (with a replacement). If that fails, I’d contact Smoant! But make sure (either way) to do it quickly! As many vendors have only a 30 day policy to cover such things!

Appreciate you sharing your experience though, and I hope you can get satisfaction in the issue without hassle!

 lil electrical tape between where the 2 pieces meet?

I can easily relate!!
The wants are long, and the money’s short here, so for me, it’s most important that I do my research first, to maximize the chance of finding (and fulfilling) the right item to suit my needs/desires.

In all sincerity, this deserves to be moved up to the top of utmost short-list IMO! I doubt you’d be disappointed in any way!

Thank you! As do I! One of the reasons I really appreciate mjag’s as much as I do! Reviews like his give me so much added insight (not that the others don’t, but it’s just the “added value” if you will)!

Rereading it this morning (before I finally crashed out) I saw several things I wanted to cover, but I was SO drained that I missed them.

One such was: This thing fires at the speed of light, and it’s instantaneous, and full power (to whatever I set it to). There’s such a gap between my Cuboid and the Cylon now evident, that I can barely bring myself to use the Cuboid anymore. (It was annoying to have to rely on it again while disassembling the Cylon for pics.)

That’s another of the things I started to address. Honestly Smok, Wismec, Eleaf, Joyetech and the rest just don’t compare. And I’m really sad that Sigelei have lost so much ground, as they used to be one of the leaders in the game when it came to build quality and performance. (The others, I’ve always expected less from, because honestly, they’ve always produced ‘average’ mods.) Not bad for the price (comparatively to DNA and YiHi) but in several cases, even the average junk started becoming overpriced (direct from China) when they used to be noticeably less than the prices at US vendors (before 8/8/2016).

I like the idea (as a stop-gap if it wasn’t under warranty…), but hopefully he takes advantage of it being covered (being so new)!

Eh I’m not gunna try to get it replaced as I don’t have any of the packaging or even the warranty card anymore. It was mistakenly thrown away a few days ago by my wife. The mod wasn’t pricey, so I’m not really worried about it. It’s more of an annoyance than anything else.

I may however investigate it deeper as all I did was hit the few screws. Might actually take it apart to find the problem and address it accordingly.

All in all, I would for sure recommend the device to people. And your review was very well done @Sprkslfly! I enjoyed reading it.

Love reviews like @Sprkslfly when the nice lil’ things are brought to the forefront, that are often missed in reviews. Great job !!

I didn’t have a chance to read all the comments yet, but that was brilliant!

First two quotes I love.

Third quoate, “should be easily replaceable by a qualified tech! I’ll have to update once mine actually dies… lol)”
I can testify, to the fact, that you are a qualified tech.

Fourth quote. We need to get you an oscilloscope.

I feel lucky that I don’t have enough money at the moment, to go out and buy this mod. After a review like that, how could I not. That was hands down, the best review I have seen, in a while. Way better than any of the “famous” you tubers.

Color me impressed bro. even your punctuation and spelling was spot on. :star_struck::+1::grin::muscle:

Wow man.
Your comments are very kind!
I’m flattered, and quite frankly, a bit embarrassed. As I think I still have a ways to go (in learning to do these assessments ‘properly’).

It takes so long to get these things together that I forgot to cover the fact that this thing fires so fast… And there are a couple pics that need to be clicked on to see the full pics (the shot of the bottom door for instance). /facepalm

I also forgot to mention that we’ve had one reported case (that I’ve read) where a member had a problem with a few lines in the LCD. (But so far it’s the only instance I’ve read of a problem)

Anyways, I just try to approach things from the point of view of “Would it be worth spending my money on?” when in too many cases, the answer is no.

But while there’s never any guarantee about longevity, this has all the positive indicators (IMO) of being a solid, long lasting performer!

I’m glad you enjoyed the “review”. =)
