Stainless Steel Coil Method

After 10 days dripping:

Last question. Do you use the smaller gauge wire on the outside to wrap or use it as the core?

All of the videos I have seen run the smaller gauge wire on the outside…You could also run a Fused Clapton by using 2 strands of your 28 gauge and wrap them with 1 strand 28 gauge…

As per everything in vaping, if it’s good to you, then go with it. Since I went strictly SS and Ti, I can’t use other metals for vaping anymore because of the metallic taste. Here’s something to think about:
Last week I pulled out a coupla RDAs to build on. On one I used 22g kanthal and on the other 22g nichrome. I vaped the kanthal first and the metal taste wasn’t too bad. Next I vaped the nichrome and the metallic taste was so pronounced and unbearable. The point to this is everyone is different. I have heard most people say kanthal tastes more metallic than nichrome. Do what works for you.
Now, Bo, me personally, I wouldn’t corrupt SS by wrapping it with Nichrome…SS is so very clean tasting, why would you wanna fuck it up with inferior wire? But that’s just me…

Flav is right. …wrap your thinner wire around your thicker wire. It’ll act better, not to mention it would seem very difficult to wrap a thicker wire around a thinner wire.

I’ve been using 304ss fused claptons with very good results. Very clean.
I’ve used 316, 316L and 317L and i think ,imo, that 304 beats the rest for taste.

Really? I’m not disputing you, brother, you know that’s not my M.O. but I’m curious how you formulate that statement? What is it that makes it better? Do you taste metal?

The 316 and 317 I’ve used are both springy, i find 304 eaiser to work with and to me it just seems cleaner.
Now, that could just be the wire i have, but i was using 316,317 before 304 for a while and as soon as I stated using 304 I noticed a difference.
Just my opinion but i find 304 on par with ti, and the rest i can taste the metallic in various degrees.

I would go a 26/27/28 core with 32 or above wrap. The thinner the wrap the quicker the ramp up time. I’ve make some with a 40 wrap and it’s quick to ramp but painfully slow to make.

I was about to ask the question but I just Googled it myself. What’s the difference between all these grades of SS? Interesting in the description it talks about how it’s not affected BY HEAT but cold instead (!??!) Try taking that springier wire and putting it in the freezer …hey it’s a shot  They are probably referring more to something like liquid nitrogen, but this is all about DIY [more winking]
[DISCLAIMER] Do NOT put your stiff SS 36 gauge into liquid nitrogen and then wrap your Clapton.

Thanks @Whiterose0818 for your opinion. I too suffer the metal taste issue. I just bought a Cuboid so I could do SS and Ti in TC. Older mods were only at the beginning of Temperature Control (electronically speaking). My older mods displayed it on the screen but couldn’t really perform.

I had purchased 50’ of G1 Ti wire but couldn’t get any config to work (wouldn’t fire ā€œcontrolledā€). My Cuboid TC 150 (now 200!) is rocking the exact same wire on the first try in ā€œSmartā€ mode (Firmware 3.13) It’s literally perfect …even on a $10 Velocity clone. Diferent wraps, diff Ohms B00M spot on …heh likes batteries tho …AND JUICE :sunglasses:

Can’t wait to order/build some 100% SS Claptons!

Thx again

may i suggest a video for you to watch…pay attention to the spool, at a 90 degree angle from your core wire, approximately 12-14 inches away from your core wire…

Was this meant for me?

yes sir…specifically for the comment about 40g+ claptons being painfully slow to make. watch the video, make sure you have really good swivels and you can have high gauge clapton wire made in no time.

Ahh ok. I use the same method as the video with well oiled swivels and a corded drill that Max’s around the 3k rpm mark. I should have said the higher gauge wrap, the longer it will take. I’ve seen lots of videos using a cordless drill that’s so much slower.

I usually only use the cordless when I’m doing the final wrap on a staggered Clapton, not sure why though

Ceramic coils would be good for people who are bothered by metallic tasting wire. Now-a-days there are many ceramic coils and tanks coming out with ceramic coils. Recently I got a Phoenix by Council of Vapor. I believe it has the metal coil sealed up inside the ceramic. I also got a Simba. It came with 3 different coil types. One is totally ceramic, another is ceramic with cotton and the third is an RBA deck with a ceramic block if you want to build it as a single rather than duel coil setup.
Have you tried any ceramic coils Whiterose0808?

Wow thanks @Joy …a little inspiration re: ceramic coils. I have a KBOX Nano Topbox and I bought a pack of ceramic coils. They made great tasting vapor (clean) but were really just under-powered by the Nano (single 18650 and low-tech electronics) and overheated quickly …tank/mod/batteries.

The coils are stamped 35W-60W and use Kanthal coil. They only start making vapor at 32.5 W and as you go up the vape is so hot as to not be enjoyable (by me) …and just gets hotter. As Grampa used to say ā€œhotter than a $3 pistolā€ I was worried I could explode batteries if I vaped it much (KBOX).

I’ve been enjoying my new Cuboid 150 with updated firmware running in TC. With the latest firmware you get the ā€œSmartā€ mode which I didn’t like the looks of, since it removes settings for TC or choice of wire …autovape if you will. However I have to say it’s literally perfect for me and has solved all TC problems …automatically, so I am thrilled.

Back to the off-topic, so I remembered my Topbox tank loaded with a ceramic coil. Screwed it on and left it in ā€œSmartā€. Don’t know how smart it really is, or it it auto-switch to power mode but it’s also working perfectly with the topbox/ceramic build. No (over) heating. More likely because I have two 18360s instead of one powering the whole thing …but who cares. Kanthal in TC? Vape-vape-vape cool and delicious …wow @ 25W! Bumped it to 35W niice (warmer but not heating up Cuboid or tank)
