Great video, Mark, thx. You know I used to feel a bit put off by Prince. I never doubted his talent but he seemed to come off a little smug to me. Funny how we easily judge people from afar. Now that I know more about him and his life my feelings have changed. How fortuitous that both Tom and Prince die of drug overdoses. It must have been so sad for George’s son to have lost these men in his life including Gary Brooker.

My Father took me to see these many years ago and the wall of sound blew my mind, big band at its best.

Agreed, So many (to many) deaths due addiction and alcoholism. It has touched every family and friend I know. Including my own.

Heehee, sure was. Once upon a time when my friends and I were getting high in our rich girlfriend’s, brand new, her daddy bought, 442, the cops spotted us and she made a split decision. Do we obey and pull over (her father was a wealthy well known figure in S. Florida) or…Dana decided to gun it and we left the cops in the dust.

I know Syd Lawrence, Lucas. Even us Yanks who know jazz know Syd Lawrence. It’s too bad most people never get to experience the live wall of sound that comes out of a big band or symphony orchestra. You can’t explain it. Even if you don’t like classical or jazz, if you sit in front of an orchestra like that you’ll never forget it. It’s not something that gets captured even on the best recordings.

Love this, Lucas. My dad was a semi-pro dancer and he just loved Astaire. Wouldn’t you have loved to be sitting in front of the Benny Goodman band? Count Basie? Ellington et al? There used to be a local big band here but it was impossible to get gigs that would pay an entire band like that. Some would play benefit concerts just to keep playing.

Absolutely I would @muth, I’m glad that you understand and have shared the same experience as I. My Father is a musician and he still goes to see things like this today, his passion is for live music.

So nice to still have your dad with you. What’s his instrument?

He can play a few, piano and keyboard, guitar, accordion, mouth organ and a little of the violin. he is one of those gifted people that can just pick up an instrument and play it. He was in a band in his younger days but now plays at a professional organ club for which he has won organ player of the year on quite a few occasions.
I’ve just noticed the time, it’s past 3am here and I must get my beauty sleep haha so I shall bid you all a goodnight.

I think so too mate. He used to encourage me to play an instrument when I was a child and I did take some lessons but I rebelled as I wasn’t interested at the time, how I wished I had stuck at it now as since those days I have forgotten more than I had learned.
