Acid reflux?

I’ve noticed there are a few commercial
Eliquid which trigger acid reflux / indigestion. I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this and if it relates to anything specific with ingredients that you’ve isolated, maybe nicotine?

I can experience this with some foods or if I take ibuprofen / nurofen but it’s not that common and I am definitely exacerbating it with some liquids.

Any thoughts??

Yeah mate, anything with lemon does it too me. Tried for ages to vape things like lemon meringue pie etc, but every time I would get acid reflux so just gave up on them…

Luckily, I have no reaction to any vape liquids.

And though I am not an MD (nor do I play one on TV), if you are taking ibuprofen or another other NSAID’s, they can be very hard on the tummy. That is why it is a good idea to eat something before taking them.

No reactions to the shitty liquids I mix, or the rare occasion I grab a commercial juice. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I used to have that effect every time I vaped ANYTHING tobacco. Didn’t matter what type, brand, just didn’t matter. Lately I’ve been able to at least enjoy some RY4’s with no issues.

I find taking an anti acid tablet cures my acid indigestion.

I appreciate that for general curing of acid reflux.

The point for me point is that there are specific eliquids I vape that absolutely trigger acid reflux. Given it’s not all eliquids, or even that common in my life, and absolutely linked to certain eliquids - I was just curious if others found they had experienced similar or if they found a link to a flavour type etc.

I’d rather avoid certain ingredients than take antacids daily to vape all eliquid.

Good answer! Too many antacids can lead to kidney stones.

I don’t have any one flavor that causes acid reflux. I found this article interesting. One of the items I’d read previously, but the others I’d never heard before.

  • Nicotine causes the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) to relax. A relaxed LES allows stomach acid to leak back into the esophagus causing heartburn.

  • Nicotine use lowers the production of saliva. A lack of saliva can potentially increase the risk of heartburn.

Saliva reduces your chance of heartburn by removing and
    neutralizing stomach acid.

    • When saliva is swallowed it washes refluxed acid back into the stomach where it belongs. This process can potentially reduce the possibility or duration of heartburn by reducing acid contact time with the esophageal lining.
    • Saliva contains bicarbonate. This is the same component of baking soda that works as an antacid.
  • Nicotine in e-cigarettes increases stomach acid production and can also cause bile salts to move from the intestine to the stomach. This increase in acid will cause acid reflux side-effects like heartburn to be more intense.

The e-liquid flavors may also increase stomach acid production. The increase in acid is created to break down the food your stomach thinks you’re about to send it. (emphasis mine)

That’s great information thank you, perhaps it’s just coinciding with slight dehydration or similar.

I rarely get acid reflux anymore but I agree with @Brotherbob on keeping some anti-acid to hand. I always make sure I have a packet of generic hydrotalcite in the medicine cabinet.

Any time the hubs uses a disposable vape or any of the pod types, he gets horrible indigestion and heartburn. I’m pretty sure it’s from the higher PG content of the liquids used in them. It doesn’t matter what flavor. A couple puffs and his gut is on fire!

Any minty flavors such as peppermint or candy cane will flare up my acid reflux. I still use them once in a while though, just to see if anything has changed.

@Tanr Good to see you here and welcome !! Not vape related, but root beer gives me awful heart burn. Sad because some of my fondest memories were drinking root beer or root beer floats with my dad. A couple times a year I drink some root beer just for the memories, knowing I will have acid indigestion, but willing to pay the price for the memories.

Welcome Tanr. Which brands are causing you to have reflux?

Thanks SquirrelSmash! I have CAP Peppermint, FW Candy Cane and TFA Wintergreen The CAP is a culprit for sure. The jury is still out on menthols or additives like Koolada or WS-23. Sometimes they are okay and sometimes not, but I do like a throat hit, so still using them. I haven’t tried the LB White Chocolate Peppermint that I recently bought because I hadn’t yet noticed the acid reflux trend from mint/menthol…fingers crossed!

This might sound weird but try FA Marshmallow with tobaccos/ry4s. I find ry4 to be astringent and never enjoyed it alone. It also works to take the edge or bitterness off of boozy flavors.
