Actual Food Recipes

I just bought the things I need to start my sourdough journey! Glass jars, rubber spatulas, the flour and I need help with a name… Here’s a few I thought of, but if someone has any ideas

Flour-ence (Florence)
Crustine (Christine)
Bread zeppelin (Led Zeppelin)
The rolling scones (the Rolling Stones)

Anyone have any catchy names?

Hi @Lynda_Marie if you’re making your sourdough from scratch by the time it becomes healthy you’ll going to go through close to ten pounds of AP or bread flour. Probably best if you start looking for recipes to use the waste up to make bread to brownies. It’s not hard to make an active starter it’s harder to figure out what you’re going to do with the waste. Good luck and have fun with your new obsession.

Oh I’ve been scouring sourdough groups on FB, and I follow a few people on YouTube that make things like cinnamon rolls, brownies, pancakes, focaccia etc with discard. One lady made focaccia jelly filled glazed dessert. Cookies etc. i still need to get a Dutch oven…but i figured that’s at least a month down the line or more to get an active starter for bread…but definitely doing discard things. Thanks for the link to the book!

It took me a month to even get the nerve to start it… I’ve read horror stories about mold and pink mold… and hooch lol  Feeding it actually in a few minutes!

Class…not book

I goofed, sorry. I gave you the wrong link. Didn’t mean to promote the book. I meant to pass along the sourdough waste recipes that were right below it. I’m on my third starter and because I use the starter only on the holidays and hated throwing the builds down the sink. I make a nice Jewish Rye for ham and when I get a taste for corned beef. I can dig out if your interested.

Happy days for your journey!

Bread baking has always been a double edged sword for me. I love it so much, but don’t have the stick-to-it, to nurse such a thing.

However, I’ve mastered the one bowl biscuit regimen, as my Grandmother’s well worn recipe notecard directs. I think she would be proud that, even today, I follow her directions to the letter for her “cat-head biscuits”.

Split them, slather them in butter and molasses, and you have a plate full of paradise!

Don’t let it frighten you. My first starter lasted over a decade. I put mine in the fridge till I’m ready for it. If it sits too long unsturred is when mold can grow but alcohol normally stops the growth. You have to remember to use it or loose it.

Tried making quinoa this week. Watched a lot of youtube vids and am making the second batch today to use as a rice replacement with sweet and sour tofu. Gotta say the first batch came out fantastic and used it in a ham, veggie, bean, quinoa soup. Very tasty and the texture was awesome. I’m continuing to work on eating healthier. Been doing green smoothies every day and homemade veggie soups a couple of times a week for the past year. Added tofu into my diet a couple of days a week about a month ago and have been pleased with the flavor and texture. Adding quinoa this week is the next step. I want to eat healthier, but if it doesn’t taste good I can’t stick to it. So far things are working out pretty well. My apartment-mate said that if someone told him a few months ago he would be eating tofu and quinoa, he would have thought he was crazy. But we are eating and enjoying the healthier food.

Omg, quinoa and salmon go so well together. Idk you were talking about tofu so not sure if you’re cutting out animal products, a good salmon is expensive but it’s a good treat every now and then. Some lemon butter type seasoning… The skin gets all crispy. I’m hungry. :skull_and_crossbones:
