IMR batteries are built in such a way that the positive insulator gives way to release the buildup of internal pressure. However⌠if the pressure builds up too fast due to thermal runaway (which is preceded by venting), the shell will rupture and possibly cause an explosion.
Most batteries we use will vent when shorted but almost never reach thermal runaway, thus never explode as such.
What the video shows is two IMR batteries venting while they are still shorted. The sparks come from the high charge being present in the batteries (though even at 3.2V the results would most likely be the same), igniting the chemicals that are being pushed out by venting.
Even a venting battery in your pocket is going to give you a bad time, as you can see. The chemicals leaking on your skin will cause severe chemical burns which heal extremely slow and are very painful.
LiPO packs however are another matter⌠theyâre not made to vent and when pierced will explode violently. Hereâs how that looks. Keep in mind that smartphones, tablets and even some laptops are using these LiPO packs⌠a lot of DNA mods too. If they go off, they give no warning and will happily take off your face or hands with them.
Present them with a Darwin award.
Alternatively, remove all labels and let life run its course.
OK, Now I am going to say MY piece: and please understand that I am NOT having a go at anyone quoted, I respect you all, a lot, I really do, I respect your knowledge and experience, I am just asking that me and people like me, people with less knowledge or experience are respected as well.
I am not an idiot, a moron, a dumb-ass or a retard, (granted that is a contentious and eminently debatable statement)
I have never had any batteries blow up, vent or otherwise cause damage or injury, but it could easily have happened:
When I was young, I had toys with batteries, AA, AAA & 9v square batteries, as I got older I had radios and
boom boxes with Ds, once as a dare, I even put a 9v rectangular one on my tongue, it tingled, and was quite unpleasant, but I didnât feel that my life was in danger. these things are sold everywhere, supermarkets have BINS Full of depleted batteries for recycling.
(that looks like a Samsung 18650 on the front)
There is NO information on this bucket telling me which batteries are dangerous and which arenât, and there is nothing to stop me from putting in a 3/4 charged 18650 with a torn wrap.
When I started Vaping, I had one battery on the go, and 2 spares, I was just sold them, as is.
The guy in the shop saw me put them in my pocket, he said nothing.
I kept them in my pocket all the time ⌠why wouldnât I? as far as I knew 18650 was just another size ⌠in fact 18 is the diameter, 65 is the length and O is the shape ⌠so as it happens 18650 IS just another size. However these batteries are more powerful - MUCH more powerful, but unless youâve been told that, or read it, or are a scientist or electrical engineer, you wonât know it: It doesnât say it on the packaging, it doesnât say it on the battery.
Over time the flimsy plastic wrapping started to tear a little, still they were kept in my pocket, as were my keys. yes you are all grimacing right now, hell, so am I ! but I STILL donât think of myself as a moron, nor do I think it of my colleagues at work who never told me not to. I DO however think that the guy in the shop was remiss in not mentioning it. it was 8 months later, when my battery collection had grown and I then had an RX200 and was buying a spare sent of batteries, I emptied my pockets on the counter and the shop manager went white as a sheet (it was impressive to watch - he is Afro-Carribean!!!) he grabbed a battery case, chucked it on the counter and told me it was free ! He then explained that batteries could short and cause fires. I thought he was being dramatic, (remember, 18650s have been part of my life for 1 year, AA, AAA, D & 9v Rectangles have been in my life for 44 years !) still, I put them in for convenience, and it was only when I came here into this forum that I have since learned a little more about the dangers, in fact I am STILL learning, up to 5 minutes ago when I read this:
I didnât know this, still donât consider myself a retard though !
Nor do I consider @Pugs1970 an idiot for not knowing all he should know about LiPo, and for not fully understanding all the massive volume of info he was given about them yesterday, I donât understand it either.
I have had 3 mods, a Kangertech Subox Mini, a Wismec Reuleux RX200 and a Wismec Reuleux RX2/3,
They have all had scratch cards to say they were real, and a little booklet of instructions, including the little bit at the beginning that says something about batteries, yadda yadda yadda, you know the little disclaimer bit, that everyone skips to go straight to the âgetting startedâ section !
The other day I saw a friend unboxing a G-Priv and for the first time ever, I saw a separate card, in full colour all about battery safety.
Why have I not seen it in my own three mod packages ?
Why was it MORE important for the manufacturer to make certain that I knew my mods were genuine, than for them to ensure that the end user fully understood that these batteries are NOT the same creature as the batteries that he or she had been around all their lives, and which they are putting in their babiesâ toy dolls !
I am hoping to get a new mod today for Christmas
So in preparation I went to a brand new vape shop (I was their 3rd ever customer, THATâS how new) to buy 4 batteries
(yes I know itâs a one-battery mod - just wanted 4 batteries) I took them out of their little cardboard boxes and the shop manager threw them away for me. I asked for a battery case. They had none !
If I hadnât spent so much time on this forum, I would have shrugged and put them in my pocket, instead of asking for the boxes back - (nope still not gonna call myself an idiot)
SO ⌠whose responsibility was it in THAT instance ? should the manufacturer have supplied a box ? perhaps!
Should the manager have told me ? almost certainly! Should I have been born with the knowledge of battery safety ? it would be nice, but I wasnât !
they could be preventing a lot of these accidents if theyâd report on the real cause, pointing out that these batteries need to be transported safely and the devices need to be locked or turned off before putting them in a pocket or purse.
Agreed, and furthermore, we could tell people as well, instead of hoping that the reporters will tell them, bear in mind ⌠the reporters themselves may not even know about battery safety, so itâs up to us, the vape shops and the manufacturers.
This is for all you newbie vapes out there this is no bullshit. straight up,PLEASE DO NOT KEEP YOUR MOD BATTERIES LOOSE IN YOUR POCKET SPEND A DOLLAR AND STORE THEM IN A PROTECTIVE CASE !!! THEY WILL EXPLODE!!
I agree, but why only newbie vapers ?
(I donât know how else to stop people like these idiots)
Sigh !
Present them with a Darwin award. Alternatively, remove all labels and let life run its course.
Yes, I do understand that this is a joke, (remember I claim not to be an imbecile ) but SirRisc you KNOW I respect you and like you:
What you do in your reviews is educate, you tell people about equipment, taste ,flavour, clouds, sizes, colours and finishes.
How about, instead of assuming your readers know, that the simple act of putting batteries in a box could save them from injury; And assuming that if they DONâT know it, theyâre deserving of a Darwin and the maiming that comes with it. Just assume that everyone, even the brightest among us (Ok thatâs definitely not me: not a moron, but not the brightest either) could benefit from a gentle reminder once in a while.
Maybe start each review with a copy of that smok card and a pic like this:
Please remember, these batteries are very powerful.
ALWAYS keep them in a non conductive battery case, away from keys, coins and other metal objects while carrying
keep it short, keep it simple, keep it visual and donât make light of it.
@Pugs1970 this suggestion goes to you too !
Now please @Steve-o_54, @DrChud, @SirRisc, @Mizzz_Z_Hobbit, @Pugs1970 do NOT think that this is in ANY WAY pointed at you, or meant to come across snarky, itâs just an open post to the community, quoting statements made.
hopefully to encourage people to keep an open mind as to the sorts of people that may have batteries in their pockets,
Vape Shop owners, you should give verbal safety info with every battery sold, and probably give away free plastic cases too! Battery manufacturers, you too ! mod manufacturers, reviewers and fellow vapers you have a responsibility as well
Now I have rambled on a bit to try and while away my boring work day, with NOBODY at all in the office and not even any traffic on the road outside, I shall shut the phucque up and wish you all a very very happy, safe Christmas with lots of prezzies and booze and far too much food !
Love, Peace and Brussels sprouts to all ! xxx
wellâŚarenât you a festive little bunny rabbit this morningâŚyou are the Birdman after all so if any of us have a cage that can be rattled tis you my lovely lol
You are quite right in what you say, howeverâŚI didnât know about lipoâs so I asked before I did something dangerous, I think thatâs the point. Itâs partly people not being told by people who should know and impart that knowledge to the person acquiring said products from themâŚlike the bloke in your shop, he shouldnât be selling things that are potentially dangerous without knowing what they are capable of doingâŚbut then on the other handâŚbetty from the tobacco kiosk in your local Asda probably doesnât know the ins and outs of Lung cancerâŚ
The problem with this kind of thing (the latest pocket explosion video) is that it is fuel for a group of people whom are trying their damnedest to ban our favourite hobby, a hobby which is helping people to live longer and not passively damage other folkâŚand is also fucking awesome to bootâŚitâs a big deal as well you know, so itâs an understandable reaction when we see someone do something like this, we are defensive and shit like this gives us a bad name.
you are bang on though, it is lack of knowledge, which isnât always the fault of the âidiotâ . We do our bit and impart as much knowledge as we can, like yesterday with me and the lipoâs, but not everyone has what i have, good knowledgeable friends on an awesome forum.
soâŚpoint takenâŚnow get back in your cageâŚand stop ruffling your feathers
merry christmas btwâŚ
LOLOL
Cheers for that ⌠now I have a big grin
only 7 hours to go, then Iâm finished work !
and sorry about the Brussels sprout comment. you are a grown up, you donât have to have one if you donât want to !
(but no pudding if you donât)
7 hours!!
ManâŚthatâs harshâŚ
Kelly is popping down with lunch in an hour and we are going to sit in the exec boardroom with the projector, screen & surround sound and watch Christmas movies (and avoid getting gravy on the ÂŁ6000 carpet)
Me too. I dont know about you but I assume its the same I also paid truck loads of money for the pleasure of that attempt at self-cancering. Fun times, itâs great I look back it it with disdain.
And for me it was the thrill of being a walking boxing ring while internally I had cancer killing cannabinoids having a dust up with cancer causing carcinogensâŚ
Miss it i do notâŚ
cough cough COUGH hack, hack spit, ugh this shirt stinks, whereâs my pharkin inhaler, cor this walking upstairs is tiring work, I need to rest for a minute
I never claimed you were, nor anyone else.
My reply was to provide info and to make clear that people should be doing their research. All the info is readily available and can easily be found online, but most are too lazy or selfconfident to do so. A problem that is very often seen in vaping unfortunately.

I know one of my tasks as a reviewer is to educate people, but people have to want to be educated. People have to apply battery safety themselves.
But after two+ years of trying to get people to use battery cases and seeing them put batteries into their pockets with keys or loose change, you become a bit cynical.
AA, AAA and 9V batteries donât nearly carry the same charge as the batteries weâre using and pose a very reduced risk in comparison, which is why they are more readily available. When was the last time you saw 18650 batteries for sale in a supermarket or roadshop?
BINGO, YAHTZEE, BOOM HEADSHOT!
Shops selling batteries should be more vigilant and forthcoming in terms of batterysafety.
Last year I was approached by a vapeshop to come and work for them. When I was talking with the owner the conversation turned towards their productrange and my experience as a reviewer. When I asked him about the batteries they sold, guess what brand they stocked exclusively? Right, Efest. A brand known to relabel lower quality batteries and exagerate their specifications. I went on a (polite) rant that those batteries are a potential hazard and that there were much safer options out there (eg: Sony, Samsung, LG).
The response was⌠depressing. The owner basically shrugged it off as âif they blow themselves up itâs not my fault, as long as they paid Iâm goodâ.
Needless to say I quickly got the fuck out and put the shop on my blacklist.
However a few months ago I was approached by another shop who wanted to consult me to extend their productrange and get them up to speed on the TPD. I essentially gave them a weeks worth of workshops, with a full afternoon of me bitching at them about battery safety. I also told them to invest in battery casings, the plastic box ones, and to take it a step further. They had their logo and info printed on them and are now giving them away for free with the purchase of batteries, they also only sell a select range of batteries made the big three manufacturers, they also have wraps with their logo and info on it and provide a rewrapping service for 0.5⏠per battery.
THAT is how shops should respond, and that is how I help people understand why itâs important to take care of their batteries.
No, I love you more. No, you put the phone down first!
And to you and your loved ones, mate.
Youâre spot on really. I tell everyone I know, especially the smokers because theyâre the most likely to buy something on a whim hoping to quit and they might not get good information. It doesnât escape me how fortunate I was that the shop my kids went to, that they eventually took me too, has knowledgeable folks working there.
Last night the NBC Nightly News had a segment on the batteries. I watched, ready to flip a table at the hysteria and misinformation but was pleasantly surprised that they quoted a vaping organization and outlined how to keep the batteries safely. The reporter was holding the exact Kanger that my son still uses, lol. Itâs a start maybe.
As to your battery safety notifications,
you sir, have me !!!
My Profound apologies, and thanks for doing the right thing !
feelinâ everso 'umble right now !
I will be going into that new vape shop TOMORROW and make these EXACT recommendations (well regarding the cases that is ⌠as for batteries they only do Samsung and LG
Merry Christmas mate
What mod is that? I want lol
Ordered⌠Thank you for the link. Wow now that was an impulse purchase. At least i checked prices on a few sites. Ended up at gearbest saved a few bucks cause shipping was free. Hope this mod works as good as it looks lol
itâs not that hard watch the video the mod was still in his hand the âexplosionâ was in his right pocket
