So I’m fairly active in a Facebook DIY group and I’ve been doing some long posts to help new mixers develop their skillset and some easy recipes. Starting today I started a new project where I’ll be trying to get the community involved in developing a recipe together, including everyone’s notes and input to develop the recipe together. The hope for this project is that it allows more experienced mixers to help guide people in the process of developing a recipe over time, and to show that it takes some hard work and trial and error to get an idea from start to finish as far as a completed juice, and some general tips on note taking, flavor development, and how to track your progress. I’ve uploaded the recipe on to ELR as well to use it to keep track of the work in progress. If anyone is interested in participating and would like to also participate you can find the recipe here.
Just add whatever notes and comments you’d like in the comment section, or you can join us on facebook if you’d like as well!
That’s part of the point! The idea is for the community to develop the recipe together using what they have available. It’s more geared towards helping newer mixers learn the process of development and helping them to figure out what subs work better than others. A practice in flavor testing, note taking, layering, and general development.
This looks pretty nice. I’m desperately behind on my MF game. For simplicity sake I stuck with more common flavorings, but this looks right up my alley
In case you’re not interested in the FB group I decided to post the write up on the FB OP, just in case anyone was interested in the notes and the general idea of how I’ve been trying to help promote growth in our DIY community. See Below.
Alright so it’s time for our community DIY project! Today we’re going over basic recipe building! As a community we voted that I would do a post for a recipe development process for a Banana and Tropical fruit smoothie recipe. It’s taken me a bit longer to get started due to some big house projects that needed finishing first. But on to our recipe!
I spent around an hour looking at various recipes for banana and fruit smoothies in general online. Not JUICE recipes, but actual smoothie recipes, the process, and what makes them so great. Smoothies consist of basically two simple things. Dairy, and fruit. Sometimes sugar, sometimes ice cream or yogurt, but most are just milk and fruit. Since our vanilla bean ice cream concentrates are heavy on the buttery vanilla tones I wanted to leave these out for now, and start with a very simple dairy base. So to begin with we start with
1% TFA Dairy
1% FA Fresh Cream
This gives us a solid, milky undertone style cream that is free from too many sweeteners or vanilla tones that we don’t want mucking up our smoothie and forcing it into the realm of over sweet desserts, since our goal is to stay true to a traditional smoothie. We -could- use yogurts, and we may still as we develop this recipe further. But my opinion on yogurt vapes is that they are ultra finicky and often taste a bit off. This is a great base for a simply dairy mix for our smoothie, and our banana choices are going to reinforce them further. On to the fruits!
In my previous post about flavor pairings we talked about choosing flavors that are known to play well together. So today for our tropical smoothie we’ll be using bananas, pineapple, and mango as our fruit portion. I made some simple choices to hopefully avoid folks not having some of these flavors. I’ll go over substitutions at the end and in the comments. For our fruit base I chose
4% TFA Banana Cream
This reinforces our dairy smoothie base and gives us a nice ripe realistic banana on top of it.
4% CAP Golden Pineapple
Easily the best pineapple to work with here, as it isn’t overly sour or tangy and will bring alot of sweetness to our mix. For starters I want it to have equal footing with the banana, and we’ll adjust once we see how they settle together.
2% CAP Sweet Mango.
This is actually the only mango I had in stock at the moment. It’s very sweet, and fairly strong so I’ve chosen to leave it a bit lower than the others.
This should give us a solid decent base for our smoothie recipe overall. I may choose after we test this together, or you may, to add a bit of coconut, cherry, or even apple to round out our fruit base, and may look at some more small amounts of another semi neutral cream to bolster our creams. I’ll be starting this mix immediately after this post, and encourage anyone who wants to participate to mix it when they get the chance, and PLEASE PROVIDE some tasting notes should you choose to.
FINAL BIT: Substitutions can be made with basically anything here, since we’re in a beta phase. This will mean that you may get slightly different results than myself or others in the group, but include your notes all the same! I’ll be including tasting notes within the hour for a fresh mix taste test.
After a 10 day steep, the flavors are coming together very good. The fruits are a little mild at this point, but I kinda expect it because MF takes up to a month to mature. The banana mango combo is delicious and the cream notes are right where I like them. I’ll test this again in 10 more days.
Yellow Mango (EuroFlavor)
This is the best mango I’ve tasted hands down. I recently acquired MF Mango and I’m anxious to see how it compares.
My version steeped well at 2 weeks in and it’s ready for a v2, though the v1 is quite nice on it’s own. The intent was to help others establish a base, and to sort of show my process when I build a new recipe. Interest on the facebook side seems to have fizzled somewhat, but that’s alright. I think a lot of people still benefited from the initial post and it at least served to get people together and talking. Thanks for taking the time to participate, and for providing valuable notes on some alternatives to the original recipe. I have very few MF as it’s a bit out of my budget to order them often, though they do go much farther. I’ll likely follow up with a v2 this weekend if I get the time.
Here’s my V2 take! I felt the dairy base needed a tiny boost to really give a nice thick mouthfeel, so I made the addition of 1% TFA Bavarian Cream to give it a bit more depth. In addition I felt the Mango needed a little boosting, but rather than raise the sickly sweet Mango to a point where it would be sort of unpleasant I’ve chosen to add FA White peach at 1%. Fresh the peach was a bit potent and overpowering, but it steeps out pretty quickly and should add a nice “fruit flesh” texture to the recipe. Hope you enjoy!
This turned out very good. I did a .2% uptick with Pyure, for a little extra smoothness and toned down banana a bit and the mango by half.
This has a banana/mango topnote with a hint of pineapple. It also has a very creamy smooth mouthfeel with a nice uplift from the vanilla. Very full flavored with a taste that lingers long after it’s vaped.
I dont have any mango or yogurt flavorings. Not sure what i could do in place of the yogurt and mango… I was thinking my Jackfruit (TPA) might work for a mango.
Any tips on getting a yogurty note without having yogurt?
I think i’ll make something up tomorrow like this (just a guess at this point… Ill do it up in calculator and mix it tomorrow)
Banana cream (LA) 4%
Bavarian cream (TPA) 1.5%
Dairy Milk (TPA)1%
Jackfruit (TPA) 1.5%
Juicy Peach (Cap) 2%
Pineapple (TPA) 2%
Pear (FA) 0.5%
Vanilla Whipped Cream (Cap) 2%
