Dark Horse Makes Major Comeback!

So, the Dark Horse RDA was the first dripper I got when I thought I wanted to be a cloud chaser. It did not disappoint. All the 0.3 ohm builds I ever did produced massive clouds, and with the wide-open airflow and a chuff cap you could drive a Buick through…well just clouds for days. That was it’s only redeeming quality. Until today.

So I’m waiting on my new spools of good titanium wire but since I still have that 26ga junk I was playing with it this morning and thought why not…the Dark Horse has really just collected dust for a while now. I built dual-coils 2.5mm with 7 wraps each. Came in at .15 ohms.Dayum! I’ve never had flavor like this off the Dark Horse. I was blown away as it far exceeded my admittedly low expectations. Where the hell was this flavor before? Well my suspicion is that hitting it at 60 watts before, while producing gloriously thick clouds, was too hot or something - perhaps it was a combination of high heat and massive air flow? Dunno. All I know is that at 530F the flavor is tremendous. I’ve read others report reviving old tanks and drippers with temperature control. I’ve not tried stainless but with Nickel I can’t seem to build a dual coil that will be high enough resistance to fire. So for that reason and because Ti is a superior wire, I urge anyone who has old drippers that they’ve set aside to get them out, blow the dust off them and try that dual coil Ti set up. Give 'em one more chance. My new 22ga Ti should be here tomorrow and now I have something else to get excited about.

I haven’t dripped in a while… I’ll give it a shot. I’m going with the Haze RDA.

I may just give it a whirl myself… I haven’t even looked @ my dark horse in months…

Not used one so I don’t have anything to compare it with. Whether you were already getting great flavor from it before with Kanthal or not I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts once you hit that TC. By the way, I’ve ran my cotton bone dry about 8 - 9 times today. Still white as snow. Kinda weird and wonderful at the same time

WHOA!!!

I ripped this out…

and mounted this dual 22g Ti, 8 wraps per, 3mm ID @ .103 ohms.

I know I made claims of Tanks being equal to drippers… but with a comparable build, it’s not the truth. Tanks have come a long way but they don’t match when built equally.

I can almost concur. I say almost because
1, I have a 5 wrap dual in my TF-R2.
2. I can only compare to the Dark Horse. Why do I say that? Well, because it’s a Dark Horse

Anyway, even with my prejudice against the Dark Horse, and with the minor difference in build, I’m still getting more flavor from the dripper. I tested this with my Monkey Nuts in both and running both at the same temp. The difference is modest but it’s there. The dripper simply tastes better. I will say though that with the convenience of the tank and the draw I have to give it to the TFV4 with dual RBA. Sacrificing a barely noticeable amount of flavor for that is a win in my book. Still, for all the vapers who have been watching the temp control threads and heard @Pro_Vapes rave about TC with Titanium, let me assure you it’s not just hype. If it can take a relative rag of a dripper like the Dark Horse and turn it into a flavor machine, imagine what it could do for your favorite topper. Get off the dang fence already.

I told someone the other day, it’ll be like mixing by weight. Once they do it they’ll say, I should’ve been done that. Everybody is still not convinced Ti is safe and some are satisfied with their current situation. It really doesn’t matter in the end. I know and that’s the main thing.

Either way they both taste better than Kanthal and Ni.

It’s funny that you bring this up cause I did the exact same thing a few weeks ago.

When I started vaping I used a mech mod and a dripper. I thought dripping was a hassle, especially when driving, so I got a tank. I was happy with the flavor and it was so much easier. Well a few weeks ago I decided to try some Ti in my old Mutation V3 with it mounted on my VT … Amazing flavor  Why the hell did I ever stop dripping?

Since then I have bought 4 more drippers, two of which have the flip (hinged) top, the Mad Hatter and the Mad Hatter Mini, which is a lot easier when driving and the flavor is incredible. Another thing I like about dripping is not having to wait for tank to be drained before switching flavors. I don’t know if I will ever go back to the tank again.

Dripping for most of us who have been vaping from the early days typically came first. Who remembers dripping into one of these?

It really was a step up from those ridiculous pieces of wadding. Still, when I got my first tank I thought I was in hog heaven. This was the thing that made me fall off the wagon the first time. Oh man, was it a pain in the ass for such little vapor and crap flavor. The Totally Wicked Tornado Tank -

I suppose I was a glutton for punishment so when I decided to get back to my e-cigs I went for the latest, greatest Totally Wicked product, the Electron S. What a waste of $140! It was VV/VW but only went to like 9.6 watts. Of course there were already better things on the market I was just too dumb to realize it.

Wow, so much money wasted, but what an adventure. And while I’m completely thrilled how vaping has advanced, I know what I like. Sure, I’m enjoying how my Phoenix drippers are rising from the ashes. But I doubt seriously it will be a new trend for me. And as long as tanks are coming out with flavor like the TFV4 with that dual RBA - well there’s no reason to think there won’t be something even better right over the horizon.

The only RDA I own is the Dark Horse. Which sucks for me because I’m a flavor chaser. I have been using sub-ohm tanks since I started about 4 months ago. I want to get into RDA’s now that I have learned to make my own coils. I been doing some research, but a lot of it is from 2 years ago. Is a Plume Veil (clone) still a great RDA for flavor ? I’m looking for a RDA on a super tight budget. I just ordered my first DIY juice supplies. It cost me a hundred bucks so I don’t have much left for a RDA. I didn’t realize how important testing your mixes out on a dripper was, and not in a tank. Any flavor RDA clones on Ebay you guys can suggest ?
