I can give some lengthy advice as someone who had a very hard time when I started mixing.
I’ve actually found some flavors that aren’t fruits that don’t need to be steeped for weeks or a month, that got me super excited. There’s not a lot of information regarding which ones are like that though. 24 hours is ideal for these, but they can also taste pretty good right away. Bavarian cream DX TPA seems to be good right away, tpa crunch berry, sweet crunch flavorah, I have an orange creamsicle recipe that’s good after 2 days, SSA vanilla ice cream is good after 3 days. There’s definitely benefits to steeping longer, and the flavors develop more. I’m just giving a bare minimum of when those taste good.
I didn’t listen to people when I first started when they told me to keep %'s low because I couldn’t taste anything at low %. Turns out I just have a hard time tasting some fruits, or they were the wrong types of flavors. Now that I follow that lower % advice, everything tastes way better. I also stopped trying to cobble a random 10 flavors of stuff together just because it sounded like it would taste good. I was very impatient for Individual flavor testing when I first started. Waiting a month to see if 10ml of a single flavor tasted good just sounded boring and time consuming. But it doesn’t have to take that long, and single flavors can taste very good.
Also, since taste is very subjective it can make things difficult too. For instance, a lot of people like cap vanilla custard, but I think it has a weird taste. I’ve tried some people’s recipes that have 4.5 stars and 40 comments just to find out I think it tastes terrible. Some of the older recipes with very high percentages may not taste good in newer devices, same as some people’s single flavor recommendations. Whenever I see something above 8% I get skeptical. It’s not the case with all of them, there’s definitely some weaker flavors out there, and again taste is subjective, but I’ve continued to find lower is better.
That leads to another thing that threw me off was reading that commercial juices contained as high as 30% flavor. I’m still not sure if that’s even true, but I’ve tried doing recipes with crazy high percentages thinking they would have strong flavor like commercial. They tasted horrid, even after I’d abandoned them in some place for weeks. The lower I’ve gone with the flavor, the better my stuff started turning out. I even ordered a recipe kit from Bull City, it was Mama Js custard. It tasted like ass to me, even after I let it steep for a month.
Some flavors can be very surprising of being disgusting right after mixing and being delicious a few days later. I’ve found that the flavors I like the best always seem to be the ones that smell really good right out of the bottle, so now that’s what I’m kinda aiming for when I buy new flavors.
I love sweet crunch flavor with Bavarian cream DX TPA and Cap 0.5% super sweet. I don’t even like frosted flakes, but vaping this is delicious to me, requires minimal steep time, and it’s nice and simple. That’s one last thing I can think of, sweetener. If you’re used to commercial, 0.5% might not be sweet enough at first, but it’s very sweet once you get used to it. Some people don’t even use any sweetener.
It’s overwhelming for sure, especially with thousands upon thousands of different choices and reviews that are all very different and contradictory. It’s very rewarding when you make something delicious though. Good luck!
