Flavorah Frosting issues

Hey Guys,

So im late to the game on flavorah frosting and have some issues. Maybe its user error.

The bottle i got is pretty dark and tastes like burnt chocolate at 1%. From all the reviews and recipes i expected to get sweet vanilla. Based on other recipes it seems 1% is not terribly high to cause distortion.

Anyone else get this? And what colour does it usually come in the bottle. Mine is brown.

2nd issue is it is muting my recipes. If i swap out cream cheese icing for example the recipe is good. But if i use flavorah frosting at 1% it mutes like crazy.

I make most recipes around 10% total flavouring so i doubt its over saturation. I use other flavorah flavourings regularly as they make some awesome ones.

Any input from people familiar with this one would be a big help. Trying to see if i got a bad bottle or just using it wrong. Thanks:)

My Flv frosting is pretty dark, not black but a deep amber color. Mine also doesn’t taste burnt. 1% should give you a nice vanilla glaze type sweetness. I’ve used it at 2% with no issues. You could possibly be sensitive to a compound in it. @Rocky02852 might have more insight on this.

Thanks. Yeah, mine is brown id say. But no vanilla. More like chocolate if anything. Wierd.
I do get chocolate-ish from devon cream (vta) but i see thats normal based on flavour notes ive read. I generally taste vanilla 80% of the time. But i sadly get pepper from my brand new 30 ml bottle of LB Ice Cream. But thats likely another issue.

Color is darker , 1pct isnt too much and you should get no choco notes , but ive heard stranger things lol.

Right, lol. Ive got the feeling its oxidized or old stock or something. But who knows, could be my tastebuds. I noticed one person in the flavour notes said they had better luck at 0.25% Maybe ill try that and see if it suits me better. Thanks.

I’d like to know how that turns out for you. I’ve had random issues with flavors but that’s because the bottle failed, like a small crack in the plastic around the tip, etc.

Yes. Ill follow up. I just mixed up 5ml at 0.25% and tasted nothing so i bumped it up to 0.5%. Ill test that for a couple of days and see what comes of it. Thanks.

I don’t get chocolate at all in the FLV Frosting and color is dark, It’s a Vanilla Frosting and it does contain small amount of Butyric Acid which some ppl are sensitive to…
I use it at 0.5% in a mix and am always careful of using vanilla’s with other vanilla’s as a lot don’t mesh well with each other.

Thanks. Yeah, i did a sft @ .25% which i had to increase to .5 then .75 till i finally tasted something. I ended getting it up to 1.5% and its fine. No chocolate or burnt taste.
Good point about the other vanillas. I had it in a couple of recipes i make regularly that have other vanillas so that could be it.
Funny when you get new flavours and realize they dont always play well with others, lol. Still a learning curve after 3 years of diy. Humbling.
I appreciate the help from all you guys.

I had this happen with one of my mixes. I had a bunch of vanilla custard type flavors, bottle traveled around with me and got very warm. Tastes a bit like chocolate pudding flavor now. It’s not bad but it’s not like it was before.

Right. Its got me making notes anyway so i can avoid certain combinations. Once i get it all figured out i may add a note to the Flavour List notes to help the next guy.

I’m constantly learning about flavors. Luckily, I have people before me who have been there, done that. Also, It’s not unusual for vanillas to turn dark…

Why does vanillin turn brown?

It has to do with the PH levels. Vanillin is pretty acidic so it reacts more the higher the PH level of your medium you put it in is. The more exposed it is to UV light, the faster the discoloration will happen, it’s just how vanillin works on a molecular basis.Feb 1, 2024

True. Interesting about the ph of vanillas. Learn something new every day:)

Ok that explains why my juice turned deep orange when I had unintentionally left it in the sun. Was busy outside working on brakes and realized it was changing.
