Freemaxx Starre Pro, not just another subohm clearo

What’s up vapefam!
SirRisc here with another gear review!

For the first time since I got my first temperature control mod, I’ve been enjoying it to its fullest.
Not because I can’t appreciate the technology, nor because I’m too lazy to wrap Ni200 or Ti coils, nor because I had a crappy device…
None of that, it was just because the Freemaxx Starre Pro does a very good job.

This clearomizer was sent to me for the purpose of this review by AVE40.com!

Premise.

Yeah yeah, I can hear you nagging already… "Another subohm clearomizer?!"
Yes, another one but a pretty decent one at that.
The Freemaxx Starre is no stranger to people who like their clearos, and the Starre Pro is basically a new iteration of the Starre.
What’s new on this one? The anti-leak control on the top which functions like a juicecontrol, and the Ni200 coilheads for temperature control.
Before you start saying “Oh great, another coilhead!”, the coilheads from the Starre are all crosscompatible so you don’t have to throw out the Starre coilheads you have if you want to upgrade to the Starre Pro.

Grab a vape, put your spare batteries in the charger, and join me as I tell you what this Starre Pro did for me…

Freemaxx Starre Pro

Specifications.

  • 304 Stainless Steel
  • Silver plated positive pin
  • 510 threaded
  • Top fill design
  • 4ml capacity
  • Widely adjustable airflow
  • 510 driptip included with airflow control
  • Ni200 coils (0.15ohm rated for 20W to 100W, and 0.25ohm rated for 20W to 80W) for temperature control
  • Japanese cotton in the coilheads

Packaging.

The Freemaxx Starre Pro comes in a plastic casing, just like the ones you’re used to getting from companies like Innokin.
Sturdy, clean and actually quite nice too. Around the plastic casing is a white paper wrap with STARRE PRO in shiny golden letters, and the specifications of the included coilheads.
Inside you’ll see the clearo sitting in a white foam insert to keep it from getting knocked around, and a spare coilhead.
The tank comes with a 0.25ohm ni200 coilhead installed, the spare coilhead is 0.15ohm Ni200.
Underneath the foam insert is a small but very clear usermanual which does contain some “Chinglish” (a Chinese translation to English, usually with spelling mistakes.)
Despite the errors in spelling, the usermanual will tell you all you need to know on how to fill the tank, how to change the coilhead and what not to do with the tank.

Performance.

Despite my preference for regular ol’e Kanthal builds, I’ve always thought that temperature control was more than just a fad.
It’s one of the big revolutions in the vaping world and it should be perfected as we venture further.
With the big debate on the safety of using different alloys like Ni200, I think we’re on a good path but we’re not quite there yet.
So for now we’re stuck using Ni200 and other alloys and basically taking the risk of doing something bad to ourselves (though still less damaging than smoking).
In that regard, I was rather surprised to receive this clearo and see that it came with Ni200 coilheads only.
I broke out my little Dovpo TC-50 which is quite a nice little mod for temperature control, and put the Starre Pro on top.

From the first puff, I was (mildly) impressed. The flavor is nice, not spectacular but better than what I’m used to from prebuilt Ni200 coilheads.
The vapor production isn’t bad at all for a clearomizer, it’s actually very nice for a temperature controlled vape.
As I got further into vaping the 0.25ohm coilhead, I noticed the flavor got better after half a tank. The draw grew easier, more smooth and less restricted.
The Japanese cotton inside seems to have a bit of a break in period, which in itself isn’t a problem as the temperature control will keep you from burning the cotton anyway.

Over time though, after about 4 full tanks, I noticed a little bit of leaking on the top of the tank.
That’s odd… the driptip is secure, the tank is sealed perfectly… Where did the leaking come from?
Ironically it came from the “anti-leaking” system, which also functions as juice flowcontrol. It’s a minor problem, but a problem none the less.
Moving the juicecontrol doesn’t seem to do much, but it does stop the Starre from leaking if you set it to “off”.

As the week progressed and the coilhead got (ab)used more frequently, I didn’t really notice any drop in performance.
In fact, it lasted for a good two weeks without any decline in performance. I hope the same can be said for the 0.15ohm coilhead.
The flavor stayed on point, the vapor production was still on point. In fact, it vaped like it did the moment I started using it… And I was using max VG too.
I have to hand it to Freemaxx; their coilheads can take a beating, which is more than what I can say for their clearomizer in itself.

Aesthetics.

The Freemaxx Starre Pro feels flimsy. It feels thin, fragile and honestly a bit scary to put in your pocket.
Why does it feel that way? Well, the glass part of the tank is big and doesn’t have any support from the inside like the Subtank has.

The overall quality is good, the threads are smooth as butter and there’s no sign of leftover coolant (machining oil).
The driptip looks alright but has AFC in a way I don’t like (seriously, look at how Smok did it with the TFV4 driptip!).
On the tank is subtle branding, which I did appreciate. I absolutely hate over-the-top branding but Freemaxx got it right.
Just beneath the glass part you’ll see “Freemaxx” on one side and “Starre Pro” on the other, barely etched in so it’s not very noticeable.

Beneath that is the airflow control, which features huuuuuuuuge holes.
Seriously, this is too much and serves no other purpose than “look at how big this hole is!”.
The bottleneck for airflow is the smallest hole, and no matter how big the airflow control holes are, you’ll never get more air in there than the smallest holes will allow for.
That said, the smallest holes is found in the coilheads, on the bottom. It does allow for easy lunghits, but you can safely click the AFC to 3 clicks without actually noticing any decline in airflow.

Pros and Cons.

Pro.

  • Great flavor
  • Vapor production is on point
  • Compatible with Ni200 coilheads as well as Kanthal coilheads
  • Easy to fill with topfill
  • Big airflow holes
  • Driptip with AFC
  • Coilheads last a loooooooooooooong time
  • Max VG wicks perfectly

Con.

  • Feels flimsy
  • No spare glass included
  • Slight leaking from the driptips AFC
  • Guzzles juice (like most subohm clearomizers)
  • Screwing on the topfill cap is a bit irritating sometimes
  • 510 driptips can be used but always leave a little AFC hole open

In conclusion.

The Freemaxx Starre Pro is a fine piece of work, despite its small issues like the tiny leak on top.
It doesn’t look like anything special, but it works great and that’s what matters most.
The coilheads being crosscompatible is a definite plus, as you can use the clearo in temperature control mode and regular powermode that way.
The inconspicuous branding is nicely done, but the glass part is open to improvement. I would suggest a vapeband if you’re going to carry it around in your pocket.
All in all I’m quite fond of the Starre Pro, it’s definitely a good tank for the price!
The coilheads are fairly cheap too so it won’t set you back as much as the heads for the TFV4 for example.

In closing I would like to thank AVE40.com for sending me this clearomizer for review!
And of course all of you who read my reviews, thank you!

I’ll be posting another review soon, the Youde Bellus RTA has arrived and it’s pretty f’ing great!

Another great review. I’m sure these take you a while to do, but your audience doesn’t have to spend the time we would in a video…especially those from PBusardo!! Holy crap it’s like is this a movie or one of those extended episodes of Sons of Anarchy or what?

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thorough and entertaining reviews.

My reviews take up a lot of time indeed. Anywhere between a couple of hours to an entire day to do the photos, the text and the layout.
It’s a labor of love though, I like doing them.
I’ve been asked multiple times if I’d do video reviews at some point and I always answer with the same sentiment: There are too many reviewers on Youtube already. I fill a niche with my written reviews that many people don’t want to do.

I appreciate the support! Thanks for that!

Cheers Ryan! I appreciate that!

The Bellus review should be up Wednesday or Friday at the latest, depending on how much time I can allocate to writing.

Personally believe it is very similar to the Uwell Crown but of the two, prefer the Uwell.

Thanks for the review!
