Because its started to seriously mess up my taste of sweet. My juice started tasting sour and my meds ( that I take sublingually) started tasting bitter. Just on a dime. I tried dropping some sucralose concentrate right on my tongue and yeah it was still sweet, so I could have just added more… but that clearly would have made the problem worse. Also I realized how the amount I add had increased over time. From like 2-4 drops in a bottle to 9… or more.
EDIT: Oh yeah I did check to see what the sweetening agent was in my my meds and it was… something I forget… but it was not sucralose or ethyl-maltol so its clearly not to do with just one chemical.
And since most flavours either have some sweetener in them, or don’t taste right unless there’s some added to them - I could really only see one thing to do. Which is a damn shame… considering the dozens of flavour concentrates I’ve bought.
Though I did kind of lose track of my original goal of getting off vaping. But the motivation for that was chest pain. But once I got nic levels from 20mg/ml to 3-4mg/ml, the chest pain mostlywent away, and so did my motivation to stop.
I was hoping the plain juice would actually help me stop, but really, its not so bad. I still add my icing agents… menthol + ws23. Too much menthol makes me short of breath and too much ws23 gives me brain freeze so I’ve found just using a bit of both works best.
But anyway… I’ve heard about similar experiences before but never really firsthand. Anybody experience anything like this?
your sense of taste can change dramatically when it comes to vaping
i vaped mostly desserts for years, now I have become extremely sensitive to them and stick to fruits mostly
what makes you so sure its the sweetener?
maybe try some experiments like not adding sweetener at all?
or just take a break and try again in the future
you can always donate your flavors to a good cause… by which i mean me.
but seriously i may be interested in buying some off you if you decide that
I stopped vaping commercial juices 50:50 because of too much sweeteners and it was easy to try DIY. I rarely use my sweeteners, and will use different flavors to sweeten.
I’ve been at 4mg/ml for about 5 years now RDL, and when I last dropped to 3mg/ml I was vaping non stop, so back to 4. My lower watt builds in a boro tank I usually double that to 8mg/ml (like a pod) heading across a parking lot or quick run to a store.
Possibly your medication is messing with your sense of taste. Look up your meds side effects on line and on the leaflet that comes with them. Possibly your doctor may suggest alternative meds that don’t have this effect. I take sublingual tablets daily and my taste is off for about an hour afterwards but it’s ok after that. Hopefully it will improve.
Have you tried alternative ways of sweetening your juice. Like adding marshmallow or meringue at a low %. Those work as a sweetener in some instances.
I use FA Menthol (Arctic) all by itself @3% once in a while just for a refresh of the palette. It’s just a light menthol with a touch of cooling.
I think a lot of us think that same way in the beginning. Using vaping as a tool to stop smoking or for health reasons, thinking I’ll just cut back on my nicotine intake. It’s like most things in life you really have to want too. I’ve been cutting myself down by .5mg every 3 months. I started @6mg many years ago and went to 3mg not long after starting. Now I’m down to 1mg and hopefully @0 by the end of 2025. Try cutting your nic down slowly it does get easier as you go.
idk I’ve been taking it for around 10 years, a lot longer than I’ve been vaping. Though I think it might be part of the problem. I mean pretty much every moment of the day I either have sweet tasting pills dissolving in mouth OR sweet vape smoke in my mouth. It only makes sense that my body would develop a sort of tolerance.
I’m glad it only took a couple days before other sweet things were tasting sweet again ( after taking all sweeteners out of the vape juice).
I think the juice is probably most at fault, just because of the vaping frequency. Yeah I got nic levels down, but now I vape even more. Not six fold, so still less nicotine overall, but still more puffing nontheless.
I’ve definitely had issues with flavor fatigue. Even if I have a cream mix with completely different flavors it tastes muted.
Sometimes its my coils. I use an RTA, so when I begin to notice a drop in flavor or sweetness, it’s typically coil related. I’ve never had an issue specifically with sweetener… If anything, all I will taste is sweet and barely any flavor. Right now, my coils are crappy so I can’t really taste either too well.
I only add .5 super sweet. I try to keep my flavors on the lower side when I can as well. After I used some in food, I realized just how strong they really are.
If I find my vape loses sweetness, my drink still tastes sweet, and things like baked goods with sugar are still sweet though. Seems like you got something different going on then.
Also I wanna mention, I’ve had my nic down to 1.5mg for a while now. I think it’s more of a mental thing at this point. I chain vape so I need to keep it very low.
Interesting… I found the opposite personally. As in I was kinda blown away by how easy the first nicotine reductions were. I just went straight from 20 to 10 and barely even noticed. Then from there went down to 7 and then 5, still not that hard but getting harder…
And then I got stuck around the 3-4mg level (it gets hard to know exactly the percentage when you get down to low levels I’ve found, especially when my concentrate is 72mg/ml, such an awkward number to work with) But I have noticed when I aim for lower than 3mg… it always ends in me feeling like I’m just not getting anything. Though I know if I want to stop, I’m gonna have to do it eventually.
Though I agree for me it too is more mindgame than it was before. I mean 3 vs 20 is a huge difference yet my behavior isn’t that different. Vape a bit more yeah, but other than that, really made me realize how much of this addiction isn’t necessarily nicotine based.
And that includes the sweet fruity flavouriness of it all. Which is why I was thinking this would help though I still find myself reaching for it… a lot. Maybe next step is removing the icing agents, as thats what gives me the feedback the nicotine no longer does ( well not as much).
btw around christmas time I took a puff of my sister’s vape of 20mg/ml nicotine and the headrush I got made me realize how much my brain has downregulated.
I know I definitely vape more for the amusement and flavor.
I remember when I first quit cigarettes, I had 3mg e juice. I came off of chain-smoking 2 packs a day. My large ashtray would be piled after I got home. I still had to smoke 1 cigarette in the morning and 1 at lunch. I forced myself to do the vape the rest of the day.
What Im trying to get at though… 3mg vape still isn’t anywhere near cigarette levels of nicotine. I remember my nicotine cravings pretty much went away after sticking to my 3mgs in my vape. It got so easy. Didn’t feel like I was jonsing to smoke right before break time anymore.
These days I think it’s way more of a distraction, like chewing gum or eating chips. It’s a flavor, I think chewing gum is a really good comparison. Same reason I smoked cigarettes was to constantly be puffing on something though.
It’s just gotta be when you’re ready. When I first switched from 3mg to 1.5 I definitely did notice, but it wasn’t too bad. After a week it didn’t really make a difference. I would never go back up, but considering going down. I don’t wanna quit vaping because I enjoy it though.
Thats a huge jump… from 40 cigarettes a day down to only 3mg/ml. Damn. I’ve been trying to get my dad off cigarettes for forever with vaping and he might vape a few times but it never seems to relieve him of his urge to smoke. And he only smokes 10 - 20 cigs a day.
For me its even more embarassing. I had been completely off all nicotine products for 10 years before I started vaping during a… not so great time in my life. To start a nicotine addiction at 30… is… I mean I should really know better. But I was vulnerable at the time and somebody passed one to me, and I gave it a try. And I was like immediately addicted like back smoking as a teenager ( smoked from age 14 - 20, also about 10-20 a day) but had to quit because my lungs were so messed up at age 20 I could barely walk to work. It was hard but I knew I just didn’t have a choice.
I also tried to get my dad to quit smoking and switch over, but it doesn’t seem to work for him.
On the flip side, I actually relapsed to cigarettes from vaping because of hard times. I sympathize with you there. I absolutely hate disposables now. A guy gave me a free box, the nicotine was so high that when they were gone I felt like the only way to get my quick little nicotine fix was going back to cigarettes.
I started smoking cigarettes very young as well, 13 but didn’t smoke heavily until I was 17.
Don’t be embarrassed, I quit cigarettes 3 times now. Using the vape all those times. Once had quit vaping and cigs, relapsed to cigarettes again. Now I vape, these days I would never want to ever go back to smoking. The stink is enough to ward me off. I do still enjoy people’s second hand cigarette smoke though (when it’s smoked outside)*. I actually think it smells nice.
You all should watch the documentary, You Don’t Know Nicotine. Nic isn’t the culprit you think it is. I’ve been on 3mg for years and sometimes vape zero nic. I hardly know the difference and am convinced at such low doses that it’s psychological. I know personally that the act of inhale/exhale is the action I am more in a habit of and derive the same pleasure from that with or without nic.
RE sweeteners, I’ve always felt that the natural sweetness of VG was enough for me. I know others will disagree or have other taste experiences but for me, I only use it occasionally. I certainly don’t use artificial sweetener in food or beverages, though. Just too cloying and icky for me, lol.
