Help me help my wife quit smoking

My wife would like to quit smoking and start vaping. She coughs every time she inhales. Every single time. She is vaping with a ego style setup on the lowest wattage setting. I use the same set up and it works well for me. Any ideas or help you can give will be appreciated.

I haven’t met many smokers that don’t cough when they start vaping.

So she coughs on the inhale, easy fix, don’t inhale. Our lungs don’t absorb nicotine suspended in VG/PG nearly as much as the membranes in our sinus and mouth. So she should be able to get her nic fix by just holding the vapor in her mouth.

Use high nic in the EGO, 24mg. Or find an AIO or pod like system and use 25-50mg nic salt.

Or find an aspire tank and coils. Or find a device that take a higher VG than PG. She may be allergic to it.

Or that…

Nice to know TY :+1:

@Dave0

This worked for me when I was new and had some harsher juices. French Inhaling at first. Then trying a french inhale +plus+ a regular inhale at the end of the french inhale. Then a transition to full regular MTL inhale. Might take a week or maybe only a few days :+1:

Good luck and congrats on trying to make the switch

I would suggest both of the above. Holding the vapor in her mouth and exhaling through her nose will help her adjust easier. Within several days her body will adapt to the vapor and she can inhale normally most likely. High pg is a common issue just going up to 60 or 70 vg will make it easier and the high nic will still give her a th. Best of luck to her.

Ask her to remember when she first tried smoking. She probably coughed a lot then too. On top of that cigs have anesthetics in them to reduce the irritation so while vaping will be less irritating, it may not feel that way at first.

I’m not familiar with the device you named but the only way I got myself used to inhaling was with the Vaporesso Target on about 10w. With the Ego One I had, I could hardly use it until I got used to vaping with the Target. Start her at the lowest setting taking mini puffs until she gets used to it. She’ll probably need a higher nic too at first but don’t mix up too much at a time. Once she gets used to vaping and ups the settings she’ll get the spins from a higher nic.

It’s okay if it takes her a little while of still smoking while she gets used to vaping. It can take a while to transition. Everyone is different for how long it takes. Best of luck to you both.

Has she tried a MTL system? It gives me a harder throat hit but not as harsh/prickly.
Especially if she’s not used to vaping, a MTL is probably also more familiar to her.

This may sound odd, but has she tried higher wattage? If the temperature is too low, it may not be forming a proper and smooth vape.

It can be tricky retraining the throat to relax and accept the vapor, but it is, as you well know, worth it to push through this transition. Every great guitarist had pain in the fingertips and cramps in the hands before it got easy.

She may need to try a few different types of gear before she finds what works.

Might like to read through:

Sounds like it could be an allergy to PG ,VG or the nic your using. Could run some tests.

Coughing is fairly common with new vapers, I was a cougher too. Personally I would just get her a zenith tank and up the vg a bit before anything else. I made the classic assumption “how different could it be from a water pipe”. It’s that different. Coughed till it hurt.

Same happened to mine, coughing, throat hitch and she went back to analogues.
Now at almost 40 a day she has to stop, she coughs with my or my son’s combos (My son is a cloud lover and I’m a flavour/Genisis style vaper, so very different styles)
I gave her a Nautilus (and fancy sleeve… ) with a Pico but she couldn’t fill it up by herself once closed (it gets too tight) and too much hassle…
Now I gave her a minifit and it seems better, ( I learnt how to rebuild the coils) made a recipe for her (she wanted some fresh tobacco)

Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed…

You cannot lead a horse to water and expect it to drink. Now lead me to a good scotch, I will drink all day long.

What PG/VG liquid is she vaping?

@Dave0 Raising the VG content is what helped me. I started in a higher PG and almost immediately stopped and went to a 70/30 VG PG and rest is history on day 62 I think cig free with a few rough days here and there. Good luck

Not that I’m any sort of expert or anything @Dave0 but I’d suggest everything that’s been mentioned already (all good advice and points to ponder) and just keep experimenting with hardware and juice and above all, giving your wife as much encouragement as you can. Eventually you will find the “happy place” for her.

For what it’s worth, my journey started with an Aspire 1300mah CF variable voltage EGO battery topped with an Aspire ET-S pyrex clearomizer with 1.6ohm BVC coil. Not 100% sure but from memory I think I was at 3.7V and took little MTL puffs/drags/pulls just like I did as if I was smoking.

I suppose I was one of the lucky ones who didn’t suffer from any side-effects whatsoever. 24mg commercial juice at 70PG/30VG (yes, 70PG ) and no coughing, no nothing. No big lung hits or high wattage to start off with. Just nice and steady and allow the “natural progression” to evolve from there.

Perseverance and belief my friend, perseverance and belief. Best of luck to you both…

This is how my GF and mother quit smoking . The Smok infinix is cheap and worth trying to get your wife to quit… Inthink eightvape.com has them for 15usd

I had this same set-up! That was a high quality MTL rig in 2014-15. It was one of my first real upgrades after the cheap plastic eGo starter kit.

wow! same here.:grinning:
that was bloody good kit in it’s day. i also tried mixing and matching that battery with various other tanks, cos i had a sort of…umm…shiny tank fetish , but you couldn’t shift me away from that battery for love nor money…at least not until i fell head-over-heels in love with the Aspire Nautilus X tank, and found it wasn’t quite powerful enough for that tank.
Thanks @Dardy and @Plunderdrum . That really took me back.
