Joyetech Espion mod with ProCore X tank review by Mjag. Good or blah?

Yeah, they could have made a better effort on the tank for sure.

Thank you my sweet :kissing_heart:

Yet another awesome review! I love when people tear stuff apart! I would lose all the screws. The 510 looks like its secured really well. Thanks again!

Excellent review once again!

And the quote set off a lightbulb in my head. I never got the deal with bubble tanks other than they held more juice. Thanks for helping my dense brain.

I’ve wondered for quite a while now if these are just glitches that are intrinsic with Joyetech. As both my Ekee and Cuboid have the same issues.

Until recently, I wasn’t sure whether it’s due to chipset, or firmware. Or some combination of the two.

Currently, I’m inclined to believe that it’s almost got to be chipset (or architecture) related. Because I’ve been running ArcticFox on my Cuboid 150w for the last few months, and I still am experiencing issues with “mode swaps”. Only now, it’s not from TC to power. It’s from power (preset #1) to being off for awhile…then I come back, and find it’s in preset #2 (TC).*

I’ve also experienced issues with the impedance staying steady (over duration).

EG: Fresh, and brand new coil is installed, and let’s say it reads .20 to start. It sometimes climbs up to as high as .24 (over typically two or three days), before something inside ‘snaps’ and it goes back to the “expected normal increase” of .01 or .02 (due to build up of consumed liquid aka: gunk) to settle in at a .21 or .22 reading.

*Both of these situations persist, even after changing to ArcticFox (on the Cuboid). So I’m more inclined to think it’s a defect in the hardware. However. I don’t know if

  1. The same chipset is used across all these mods (nor am I going to assume that)
  2. ArcticFox was written from the ground up, or, did they heavily borrow, and just modify code as desired. (Perhaps somehow the line(s) of code responsible for the observed issues remain intact within ArcticFox?)

It’s very interesting nonetheless.

Also, FWIW, the 2a charging on the Ekee is highly over powered for that particular design. That mod gets WAY TOO HOT for comfort while charging. And while the temp protection (while charging, not to be confused with TC temp protect) does work and kicks in when the board/chassis gets hot, IMO, it should kick in much sooner. But then, that would mean the charging cycle would take even longer, and as a result, would somewhat negate the benefit of having 2a charging.

(Still reading your review, so I’ll be anxious to see how the 2a charging fared with you, but wanted to comment while I was thinking about it all)

Ok… Done reading and perusing the pics!

Great review, and love the gut-shots!

Looks like they used the same damned stand-off idea as what they did in the Cuboid (which is a crappy implementation IMO). On the plus side though, they definitely changed the supplier of the fire switch on said stand-off. So here’s hoping there’s no fire button issues!

Thanks @Jim22, it is always fun to peak inside a mod :+1:

@TheTinMan this is the first tank that the bubble glass made sense to me, wasn’t expecting to notice a difference between the 2 and 4.5ml options. Made more sense when I thought about it, in 2ml mode the coils are about as close as you would have them in an RDA.

@Sprkslfly I do worry about Joyetech/Wismec products, more so with Wismec, too many problems with that brand but I always try and keep an open mind and not let past issues cloud my judgement. I am hoping the Espion continues to work like it has for the past month, that would be great. I know the Joyetech eVic-VTC mini I gave to my ex is still working and trust me, that woman can destroy anything. I have had more luck with Joyetech over Wismec products even though they are under the same parent company.
I did not mention the charging in my review, I usually don’t unless I discover a problem or there is a special function to it. I did test it though and the mod just got warm but not hot when using a 2A charger.
I did go and read a few reviews on the Espion after finishing mine and it looks like the TC problems I encountered is the norm, at least with the 2 reviews I read from reviewers who favor TC. I am vaping my Espion with a dual SS316L triple core fused clapton build @ 0.20ohms in an RDA as I write this and it is still a great vape, comparable to my Yihi and DNA mods. I only had problems with builds under 0.15 but read others had problems with other builds. Going off of that I would have to say it is not the most consistent TC mod but the builds that work for me work great in TC. Sorry for the long paragraph, trying to keep it together as I am responding to all in one post…lol. Thanks for the well thought out and informative post bud!

Thank you @redscaddy22 :+1:

Thank you @Norseman, much appreciated :+1:

Thanks @Steampugs and thank you for having me on the team, I really appreciate all you do for us, well you and @Lolly, lets be honest, you would be a lost dog without her  Looking forward to your review on it :+1:

Thank you VM, it is a nice mod for sure, still in my line up and gonna check out the other colors at the ECC show in a few weeks and possibly pick up another one. The screen is awesome and so clear and it is just so compact for dual batteries.

I added the gunmetal Espion a few weeks ago but today went to use it in TC and got very choppy results. My black review sample was great in TC most of the time but this new one is just off. Wish I still had my black one but gave it to a friend when I got the gunmetal…sigh. It sure is good looking though, hopefully I can figure out why TC is out of whack, maybe it has a different firmware?

Definitely appreciate the update bud!
I really like the looks of it.

You’re probably nail on the head. But as with all engineering samples… Hardware (chips etc) are always subject to availability when it comes to production time. Hard to say.

Here’s hoping a simple F/W update solves it!

Yeah bud, had to update the review thread on what is happening now. I like the looks of it too and really small with a great finish, all around nice mod that as can be seen is still being used after my review.

I just checked there website and no FW updates, same as what is already on the mod. I did hear a friend say that Arctic Fox is working on a firmware so there is hope.

I am also noticing the first initial press of the fire button there is a little delay, not the case with the black sample version I reviewed. After the first hit then it is quicker and this is with a dual 26g single wire build, not some huge aliens or anything. The build comes in at 0.25 ohms and generally works great in TC so it just bugs me. Gonna have to put this to the side for now and get back to it later.

Arctic Fox just released there new Red Panda build for color screens, Wismec Sinuous Ravage230 and Joyetech ESPION support.

I still have to figure out how to switch from C to F but aside from that it is pretty good thus far.

Hey thanks @mjag! I love the display difference. I’m so glad you added this. :facepunch:

Thank you and I gotta give credit to someone on another forum who clued me in. Be careful with the joyetech update, did that one and lost my battery indicators on the display.

Arctic Fox is great so far, the customization of the software is excellent. Probably as good or close to escribe for DNA mods. I still have to play with it some more but so far so good. It even adds % based preheat which is adjustable.

I still love the form factor of the espion and this just makes it that much better.

To get to F try running to the max on C, let off then go up again, it should start over at the lowest F setting.
Great review, sorry I took so long to read it, I’m a s l o w reader

Thanks bud!

Doesn’t turn from C to F like other mods, found out you can go into the menu in the mod or change it in the software. Arctic Fox or actually Red Panda as they call it for color screen mods is powerful stuff, I love it so far.
