Just for reference kanthal A-1 is an alloy containing about 20-25% chromium. So itās not like a switch to nickel wire is necessarily going to be worse.
We really need long term data for this stuff. Iām not sure thereās enough data out there for anyone to be saying what is safest yet.
Actually add Titanium and Stainless steel. Both contain Chromium. Remember though, when alloyed, composition changes. It appears the danger is in powders or fumes from say melting, grinding, etc. This is why welders need to be careful inhaling the fumes when welding SS. Also, they both contain nickel as well, but again, itās an alloy ā¦
Nickel wire, that is nearly pure nickel. In my opinion, nickel wire should be avoided. ā¦
I donāt believe titanium grade 1 (or 2) contains Crā¦ Grade 1 and 2 are unalloyedā¦ They do contain C and Fe, in small quantities, and a few othersā¦
SS 316 contains 17% and 317L contains 18-20% Crā¦
Duh, youāre correct, itās the old coming out again. I stand corrected. I have been looking at so much of this stuff lately it starts to blend. Itās a damn shame there isnāt this much info available when applied to vaping. So much speculation without testingā¦
Speaking of SS wire, ever seen a wire SS product with 1% nickel or less? Havenāt had time to look around but want toā¦

This guy sells nickel free, but I donāt know if 430 grade is good for vaping. I canāt find anything on it, most people are using 316 or 317.
Found this in a welding doc:
āAustenitic stainless steels include
the 200 and 300 series of which
type 304 is the most common. The
primary alloying additions are
chromium and nickel. Ferritic
stainless steels are non-hardenable
Fe-Cr alloys. Types 405, 409, 430,
422 and 446 are representative of
this group.ā

Here you go, I found quite a bit. Take a look everyone, whatās your thoughts for vape use?
http://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=996 - 430 Grade Stainless Steel
I meant specifically in relation to vaping, but thatās still a great link!
Whatās your thoughts, think 430 would work for us?
It should vaporize your liquid without breaking or burning, but safety-wise I have no idea.
For some reason Uwell went with 316 for the crown SS coils. Other people seem to be using 304 or 317. I have no idea why. I wish I knew if one is better, worse, or if itās all approximately the same risk.
I have some 316 on order. Will be performing some tests with it as to my xCubeās effectiveness in TC mode as well as dry burn test in wattage mode. Maybe Iām kidding myself here but I feel you can learn a lot by purposely overheating some of these wires and observing the results.
I would be interested in your results. Just do it outside for ventilation if your gonna overheat it. Be safeā¦

Looking at the Chemistry of Ti, there is no doubt in my mind itās the safest resistance wire. Whether it is or not, I would still use it because it delivers the best flavor.

Kanthal has up to 25% Chromium, but so many think itās the safest. They are only mislead because it was the first wire used for vaping. Little do they know, from a health perspective Iād say itās the worst for you.
SS 316L has 16 to 18% Chromium. I never realized that either, but it wouldnāt deter me from using it because it delivers good flavor and a low resistance. Those are my main factors for choosing a wire.
