After watching 7 seasons of Startrek DS 9 I decided not to go straight to Voyager but watch something else in between to get some distance between the two series. I ended up watching OZ and wished I never had. It depressed the living daylights out of me.

I’m wondering if it’ll do justice.
[/quote]It usually doesn’t. I very seldom watch anything based on books I’ve enjoyed reading, it is mostly a let down.
So many people feel that way. But I think it’s because of expectations. When you’ve read the book you expect to see a mirror image, or close to it. Personally I look at a move adaptation as just that, an adaptation. As a former Stephen King junkie I can tell you if strict adherence to a novel is required, don’t bother with any movies! Maybe it was The Shining or Pet Cemetery that let me down, and clearly Misery was a bit of a departure. But watching the films and enjoying their entertainment value to me anyway is perfectly easy. I suppose I’m lucky there. Then again, I’ve adapted a lot of recipes for eliquid and enjoyed the hell out of those too
It is more than just the storyline. It is just that reading a book conjures up images of the people described and such. They always look different. The shining was a letdown after the book, but the miniseries that did follow the book closely was also a letdown without Jack Nickolson. He just played the psycho very well. Strict adherence is not possible unless you make a movie out of a novel that is at least 20 hours long. So I watch movies that are not based on novels or I watch the movie first and then read the book.
Agreed. But I quite enjoyed the movie using my unique superpower ability for separating expectations from what’s in front of me Speaking of King, my absolute favorite of his novels is The Talisman. I read that…geez I think I was stationed at Ansbach Germany so it would have been around 1984. Great story, awesome imagery. Now where’s the damn movie!?
Maybe he doesn’t want any of his books filmed anymore. He didn’t like what they did to the Shining, hence the miniseries and I think he got a lot of crap about that series too
So true. But there are exceptions. I was very impressed with the vision of Peter Jackson’s vision of Lord of the Rings - that matched my own vision pretty closely!
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell was pretty good and pretty close to what I remember of the book. I was very happy with it. My favorite Stephen King movie/show was Storm of the Century followed by The Langoliers, but I think that was partly just ‘experience’ of it. The Langoliers was really cheesy! LoL. That being said, I haven’t read any of the books, so I can’t really judge there.
That was a fantastic book. The sequel wasn’t as good but it was nice to see the character return. I believe that was a collaboration with Peter Straub, right? Or am I thinking of a different novel?
That trilogy was perfection. I’ve read the trilogy every year for the past 20 years or so and the movies exceeded my expectations. The Hobbit…eh, not so much.
I was a Stephen King junkie too. Might be weird but my absolute favorites were the Dark Tower series. Honestly hoping they never ruin it with movies or TV though.
I used to have some of King’s work before he picked up his pen name…Richard Bachman. You know I think he must have hated being a school teacher or something. He’s picked on, demonized and brutalized kids for nearly 4 decades now.
He has a great quote: “I have the heart of a child…in a jar on my desk”. I think I’ve read 95% of his stuff. Including Bachman. Love the Dark Tower series even though I don’t fully understand it.
Love that series too. The second book is called the drawing of the three, which were your exact words when you did the last giveaway and I won
I was rereading this not so long ago and when I took the dog out I found this picture outside, the rose, the tower and the black orb. Next I went for a coffee with a friend and got table number 19.
Was expecting to be sucked through a door next…
My wife has been StealthFlixing. What is that? Well that’s when you have a Netflix account, everyone at home has their own profile, and someone watches something THEY think is fantastic but doesn’t say anything until the end of the first season. Then they are all like hurry up, binge the first season and we can watch the second together to which I respond did it take you the entire first season to realize it was a great show we might enjoy together? Cheeky little woman she is!
So the show is Reign. She said it’s somewhat like The Tudors which I really liked. Anyone seen it care to weigh in? Should I spend tomorrow night and Saturday catching up or rake wet, nasty leaves outside?
Just finishing Series 2 of The Leftovers, this series has been so good, some of the best TV I have seen in a while. Written by the guy who wrote Lost
There is a song that is played in the background in nearly every episode using a piano that is so haunting, but really lifts the dramatic parts.
Found it on Youtube, there is no original recording and HBO have adjusted it slightly, It has grown on me as I get into the series and I listen for it now
