Therein lies the problem, the scale is mis-calibrated. The scales instruction manual may tell how heavy the calibration weight should be, but your using an random weight empty bottle… But you could test the scale even if you don’t have the calibration weight. you can use 20 nickels, or 40 pennies, to make a 100 grams test weight.
I have never pressed the calibration key on my scale.

They sound like that same scales I have, and I have never had to calibrate them once. I do know the manual states there are 3 weights you can use for calibration, 5g 10g and 20g - you select which one after putting it into calibration mode.
Sounds like you are going to have to buy a small set of metal weights to sort this out. But yeah, the rest of your procedure is bang on. Never calibrate a new scale, only ever calibrate one that you KNOW is giving a bad reading. I keep a 1g weight on my keyring just for this purpose though.
