I have copied and great recipe from this site that is my all ADV however, the last time I made it after a few days it changed from this great strawberry cream to a very artificial chemical type taste. What do you think I did wrong? Thank you Donna.
Just to be sure I understand, you’ve made this same thing many times before and it was fine. This time, same exact process but it’s gone off somehow?
If your answer is yes then, are you reusing bottles? Or if they were new, did you wash them? It could be some film or residue on the bottle.
Are any of your supplies new? New nic? Maybe older nic that’s gone bad? Did you remember to shake your flavors before using them?
Is it possible in your previous mixing sessions you’ve let the juice breathe a bit where maybe this time you’ve capped it right up?
Do you heat steep? Getting a mix too hot can throw the flavors off but I’ve only heard of them muting, not turning chemical.
Yes, You guys rock! Yes, same recipe same process & I did reuse my plastic bottle bc I thought since it was for myself & the same recipe it would be okay. Lesson learned on that one. Thank you!
PS: which is better to let them breath or cap them striaghtaway which is what I’ve been doing?
In that case reusing should be fine…
“Breathing” is rarely necessary and usually does very little. Just cap it and shake it and leave it
Other than that, I am not sure. Perhaps you accidentally used too much? If the supplies were the same, that’s the only thing I can think of
Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate this site. As a newbie I would be completely lost without it. Even though I watch how 2 you tube videos this is so much better.
Just making the same recipe into the same bottle shouldn’t cause trouble. The trouble that came to mind is if a new bottle wasn’t made or shipped in a clean environment, like some I got from China that came bundled into a plastic grocery bag and had a machine oil smell. Or if you washed them with soap in between uses and some kind of residue stayed on there.
I don’t know if this is the case for you now but sometimes, when you get a brand new bottle of flavoring, the vendor didn’t shake their supply up well enough before dispensing it into the smaller bottles. It’s rare but it can happen and then you get any manner of strange effects.
Did you use a syringe? If so, maybe it still had some other flavoring in the tube. Before I started mixing by weight, I made that mistake often.
I did get my bottles from China in a big bag & there is a good chance I didn’t rinse my syringes well enough bc every time I was them really good the markings rub off super easy.
im guessing you used Cap sweet strawberry?
Wrapping your syringes with scotch (cellophane) tape will stop the markings wearing / washing off. Try taking a small amount of your mix, like 5 ml, dilute with 1 ml base and see how you like it. You might need to dilute less or more to taste. If that don’t work, sing it a lullaby and put it to steep for awhile.
I have forgotten to shake a bottle or two myself and had it cause havoc in my mixes.
As far as a bad influence, probably but in a good way
Great idea! Thank you! I really appreciate your help. Happy Thanksgiving.
Actually iam using Strawberry ripe from Fa & watermelon from delosi.
Your welcome! Happy Thanksgiving to you too
Welcome to Thunderdome @Donna4…
Oh wait, wrong situation…
I have to concur with @Posh_And_Unique and @Mizzz_Z_Hobbit… shake your concentrates vigorously before mixing. I found that some strawberry flavors (CAP Sweet Strawberry included) can have a harsh chemical flavor if not prepped correctly. If memory serves me correctly, Peach and Juicy Peach are the same way - shake until your arm hurts, then pour and measure.
Works perfectly every time.
As a slightly different suggestion, maybe make a small 10 or 15 ml batch of that same recipe and see if you still are getting the off taste.
I say this for a couple reasons… first this will confirm there is actually something wrong somewhere, whether it’s the bottle, the flavors, or the recipe. Even the best baker will have a cake fall sometime. If the small batch tastes fine, then just chalk it up to a fluke, if the small batch still tastes off, I would start the baby steps of figuring things by doing a simple mix of just pg/vg… does it taste alright… add nic to that base… does that taste alright… only then panic over what flavor might be off
Great idea. Will do this & will let you know what happens. Thank you & Happy Thanksgiving.
