Re-Wicking / Dry Burn / Ohms Law..etc

Omfg. I feel so dumb. So last night I wanted to change my coils… I put them in backwards and kept getting ā€œcheck atomizer.ā€ Sat there for an hour going…wtf is going on here?

Then I looked at where the juice holes were on the deck and it all made sense. :skull_and_crossbones:

Just got a beautiful brand new set of coils from coil clout. Reading out at .13ohms

Past two days have sucked, finally have flavor and sweetness again. Feels like im wasting juice when I can’t taste it.

Been buying coils from these guys for a couple years now. Every time they’ve been perfectly wrapped. Johnathan really takes pride in his work and you can tell. When you see what actually goes into making these coils the price does seem that expensive. Sitting there with a drill and a jig, wrapping a Clapton, stripping a Clapton, perfectly wrapping a thin tiny curly Clapton wire over straightened cores. Then taking that wire and perfectly coiling it into a useable product. It takes a lot of precision, all by hand. They inspect each one to make sure there’s no imperfections. (No, I’m not getting paid. Im just impressed.) As someone who takes pride in my work myself, I can appreciate the effort.

I installed them the most carefully I’ve ever installed coils…even did the best looking wick I’ve done in a while. Didn’t take photos because I was so excited to slap everything back together and finally having a working set.

Beautiful slow pops at only 60watts.

80 watts, still a little bland, some flavor and sweetness coming through.

90 watts, sweetness, a little more flavor, wonderful popping noises…

97 watts, smooth quicker popping, nice and sweet, flavor still steadily coming through.

104 watts, a little bland breaking in, sweet, smooth quick popping, great crackle.

After breaking in, 109 watts feels a smidge too high, but I can’t seem to decide between 104 and 109. Great crackle, relatively cool vapor, finally!!! FLAVOR IS BACK AGAIN!!!

Everything is working perfectly again.

Time to really fill the tank up nice and good!!

Y’know, this ended up being like a good experiment. I already believed I vaped primarily for the flavor, secondary for the small dose of nicotine in my juice. It just wasn’t as enjoyable when it didn’t taste good. Also, the crackle and fullness of the vapor, it’s just not as enjoyable without it working as intended.

Seems like my coils only last 2 weeks before the flavor disappears now. They used to last a lot longer it seemed like when I only used single coil. This morning I was able to get flavor cranking up the watts, it dropped off quickly though. The vapor also doesn’t feel as warm. :skull_and_crossbones: Coils.

It’s not the coils if your loosing flavor. It’s your cotton. Replace your cotton and depending on your cotton it may take a little break in to get that full flavor back. When replacing your cotton do a dry burn ang get the gunk off the coil.

I have replaced it almost every 2-3 days and done a dry burn. Yesterday it just seemed like the flavor disappeared, figured I’d go ahead rewick and burn off the junk. Still no flavor after it was back together. I think it’s my chain vaping that causes them to burn out quicker.

I know what you’re talking about though. This is one of those situations where I have to change my coils. I think aliens are just not made to last very long. I know for sure it’s the coils because I drip directly onto them like an RDA and the flavor is very muted, no sweetness either despite me accidentally putting a little too much super sweet in this last 60ml.

Did you scrape the gunk off? Wash out the base and dry it before adding new cotton? I also clean the air chamber with paper towel. I also prime and burn then prime again. Then put it back together. You reminded me to change cotton on one of my RTA’s. Cotton was black. Gunked up coils will make you turn up the wattage 5/10 watts depending on how you like your vape. Anyway all my flavor came back after 5/6 puffs.

Can’t really scrape alien coils, the wavy outer wrap is fragile, it will damage them. What kind of coils do you use? I’ve had Claptons last me wayyyy longer than aliens have lately. I actually broke my whole RTA down yesterday and cleaned it to no avail. I’ll try taking a closer look at the coils today. I’m thinking they’re spent though.

Rubbish. If you can’t stroke your coils how do you get the coil to fire from the center out and duo coils to burn evenly? By scraping is the wrong term. All coils need stroking. Dry burning turns gunk to a ash. It’s got to be removed , otherwise you are replacing coils every 30mls. Just removing the cotton throws your coils out of wack.

Hmmm… I never really ā€œrestrumā€ or scrape them when I dry burn if they glow even. I’m about to sit down and take a look here.

Ok, so first pic is after slightly drying them, second pic is after dry burn and scrape, prime and dry burn.

Bout to rewick and try 1 more time.

I had just replaced it yesterday, but I noticed half of the wick was brown. When I glow them they look even though.

It was sparkling shiny in some spots… I dry burned and scraped a little more aggressively than I usually do…bout to do a taste.

Update* it’s spitting at me, to me that’s actually a good sign.

Well, it tastes wayyyyyy more sweet now at least. Well shit, I suppose it worked a bit. Not getting flavor though.

Put a couple drops of a different mix onto the coils, definitely can taste better now.

Thank you for the tips!!! @rcleven I woulda just swapped the suckers out.

Coils cleaned up great from what I can see. Make sure coils are heating up from the center to the outside of of the coils. A lite strum will help with that. Try to get both coils to heat up evenly. Then wick and prime. Prime the coil first , and heavily prime the cotton at each end of the coils. Let it absorb into the cotton before moving on (less mess). Then prime down into the well. Test fire to check your wattage. Prime the spaces between the coil after test firing. Assemble and fill tank. Let it sit a minute to fill the wells. Might take a few puffs to break in the new cotton. If it’s tasting sweeter your getting flavor. I personally drink water to clean my pallet.

When you dry burn to clean them up if their glowing red their still dirty if you have black spots. Strum the black spots. After the spots are gone let it cool and rinse under water. Your washing the gunk away from the base. Otherwise they can get into the tank.

I haven’t read above comments, but have you ever ran a single coil on that rig?! It works great for me.

After dry burning your coils, dunk your coils into a shallow bowl of water. Repeat until the little flecks of black gunk are no longer falling off. Usually 3 to 5 burns. It’ll bring some flavor back.

The holes on the deck are too far apart.

Ok… It worked for a little while but unfortunately the flavor just isn’t there anymore. It began lacking again so I tried to repeat the process yesterday, but to no avail. Upon first taking a few puffs it was sweet, but it’s just not cutting it. I think there’s something wrong with the coils. I didn’t pay attention when I bought them, 5 wrapps is a little too short for this deck so it slightly distorts them. :skull_and_crossbones:

New ones in and boom. I just made some new mixes, I just had to freaking taste them. Also… Yummy!

The five wrap spacing shouldn’t matter. All it affects is the Ohm’s. They will run a little hotter at a little lower wattage. Are these coils hybrid wire?
