Re-Wicking / Dry Burn / Ohms Law..etc

They’re about a year old, but I haven’t used the device in about 6 or 8 months.

Yeah, I just charged them. But, I’ve been having that issue since I had it.

I keep hearing about those. What are they?

Oh that’s probably no good. The battery website ive ordered from in the past is out of stock of freaking everything, but I know these batteries are good. I’ve been using em for a long time.

Also, just so you don’t make the same mistake i did, if the battery’s protective cover gets scratched or peeled off on both and they touch together, they could get very hot and explode. I have a couple in a case in my backpack, had to dispose of them. There were two scratches on the outer cover, and they touched each other. I had no idea that was a thing. But yeah.

Here’s these though

Oh, so this one on the left is an RTA, rebuildable tank atomizer. The one on the right is an RDA. Rebuildable drip atomizer, it doesn’t have a tank to hold the juice. What you do with an RDA is drip the juice directly onto the coil/wick from the top. And you redrip every few puffs.

Rebuildable means that you put these little coils into it the deck and screw them in and then you feed little cotton strips into them. There’s quite a few different kinds. This is what it looks like under the cover of the RDA.

@Mediocre_Remedial that was really helpful seeing the 2 side by side and the difference. How on earth do u guys manage to drip whilst out and about?! Drip and drive and drip and walk for example?! Do u use a smaller device for those sort of scenarios? And if so is it a pod kit? And if its a pod kit do you use your diy juice in the pod and does it taste a lot different to what you are used to with the rta/rda?.
Sorry for all the questions but it’s something I’ve often wondered about and so jumped at the opportunity to ask!!

This is exactly why I don’t take my RDA outside of the house lol. I just have it because I got it for a couple bucks at a mall sale… They were getting rid of all the Super old* vape stuff and I bought a couple things cheap. I barely even use this thing at all I just put it together to play with it.

I’ve actually never used a pod kit. I used a disposable a few times, but I mainly just make my own juice DIY and use my RTAs. Typically they have plenty of juice while I’m driving. If I’m driving for 2 hours I probably have to fill up once or twice depending on how much I’m vaping, and I chain vape. I mix my nicotine at only 1.5mg because of that. Or I will just switch the tanks and vape a different flavor.

That’s something I do, I will carry around three RTA tanks with me. That’s why I get the top airflow ones because if they were bottom air flow I’m pretty sure they would leak all over the place.

Another thing I forgot to mention, RDA’s are kind of an older tech. People still use them for flavor/clouds. They invented special mods for them called squonk boxes. There’s a special pin on the bottom of some RDAs that allows juice to go up inside. There’s a little bottle on the bottom inside the box mod that you can squeeze to push juice up to the RDA.

I don’t have one, but here’s a little useful diagram from wotofo.

I understand now! It was interesting to see how the 2 compare in size. Is a squonk mod similar but the bottle of juice is inside the mod and you then squeeze it onto the coil/wicking? To think a year ago this was all a foreign language to me!!
Only this morning when I had trouble holding the dog lead and pod kit did I wonder how does everyone manage with larger devices!!! thanks. Would a decent sub ohm kit like geekvape give quite good flavour with sub ohm juice and stock mesh coils do you think?
Today I accidentally set off a smoke alarm using my pod kit trying to have a sneaky puff inside a shop toilet… very embarrassing !

Rather than trusting smoktech, I yanked the batteries.

Mxjo imr 18650 3000mHh, 3.7 V, 35 A. I’m not finding that there.I can find some with more or less amps, but not 35.

Found these:

These work?

you type quicker than me!!
edit I didnt mean to reply to myself  with a squonk mod are they always for rebuildables and not stock coils and mesh already premade?

Well, sub ohm device would be much larger than a pod kit. I’ve never used the pod kit so I can’t attest to the flavor in comparison. Sub ohms will also create huge clouds that can be spotted from 100 ft away, so as far as sitting off a smoke detector… Lol. I didn’t actually know that vapors could set off smoke detectors, that’s good to know. There are some sub-ohm devices that are smaller with single batteries, but I prefer the bigger one because the battery lasts longer when there’s two.

Ever since the first time I saw a sub ohm device I wanted one. The big clouds amused. The novelties worn off a bit but I still enjoy it a lot. It’s really more about the customization aspect of it. I believe pod kits were made just to make vaping easier for people. Sub ohm mods with RTAs and RDAs are for “people who like to fiddle with things” I say. It’s like having a pipe versus a cigarette. Sub-ohm devices are like pipes, a pod kits are like a cigarette. Not literally but figuratively.

I’ve only ever seen them used with RDAs. I think they’re actually our combinations that would allow for pre-made coils, I don’t know anything about them though. There are mesh RDAs and RTAs though. There’s bound to be some mesh RDAs for squonk mods out there as well. I’ve never used a mesh RTA or RDA.

Here’s another useful picture I stole off wotofos website lol

There’s also a massive variety of types of coils that can be put into RTAs and RDAs. Some really crazy stuff that people wind up on drills and special jigs. I didn’t really appreciate the art that what went into coil making until I saw what people had to do to make special coils. I don’t think the mesh gets that fancy though.

NO. WAIT. THOSE ARENT FOR VAPING.

The batteries are the right size but they make ones that are for vaping and there’s ones that are not for vaping.

Or I could be freaking out for no reason. I don’t know enough but I would stay away from any that don’t specifically say theyre for vaping. I was just on one of my websites that I order on and there was a pair of 18650s that stated on the outer battery label “not to be used with vape devices.”

That just leads me to believe that not all 18650s are made the same.

I definitely don’t think you should get the ones off Amazon, where are our electricity savvy people at? I don’t want to put you in the wrong direction but I definitely don’t trust those batteries off of Amazon.

If you really need batteries ASAP try calling your local vape stores and ask 18650s. I noticed the people in the vape shops and can be fairly knowledgeable. As long as it’s an actual vape shop and not a smoke shop.

You said you like to vape at 120 watts, so a battery like this should be good for your use. Try to order off of vape websites, you never know what you can get off of Amazon. I don’t trust them, especially because Amazon’s not even allowed to sell vape equipment.

Two of these batteries is going to cost around $22 plus whatever shipping is, but it’s better to get a reputable battery rather than some random junk off Amazon.

This is a fairly reputable online vape store.

Batteries especially are something you don’t want to cheap out on.

Yeah apparently with new smoke detectors they sense vapour!! I wasn’t aware however that I was standing directly below one chain vaping . What a muppet! I swiftly exited and no sprinklers came on so didn’t leave the store drenched!
And yes definitely not able to subtly vape with a sub ohm kit!! I also really like the look of them. The build and aesthetics look amazing on some especially the one @SessionDrummer just reviewed. Excellent photos and reviews by the way!
I would like to try a sub ohm kit with the mesh stock coils. To alternate between that and my oxva vprime pod kit. There are so many out there.
And an odd question sorry, do u need to have decent long deep breath lung capacity for sub ohm? I watched people seem to inhale forever? Sorry if this sounds stupid i just needed to ask.

The only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked.

That’s a very good question… I’m sure it varies between person, but the draw from a sub-ohm device is DTL, direct to lung. The draw is much more “airy” in comparison to a more restrictive device like a MTL, mouth to lung, like a pod.

With a sub ohm you breath directly in, kinda like how someone uses an inhaler. I do like a quick hard draw, where I feel like I breath in as much as I can. My vape shows me how many seconds my draws are. It’s usually between 1-2 seconds. if I hold the button too long and draw too slowly, it overheats the coil and the wick will burn because the juice vaporizes off the coil quickly. I guess it kinda feels like taking a big, quick breath.

I suppose it also depends on the ramp up time of someone’s coils, and the wattage they’re using. Mine heat up fairly quickly.

@McDuckie

Hey, Pauly is trying to find 18650 batteries. He vapes his mod at 120 watts, he was looking at batteries on Amazon but I don’t believe those can be trusted, nor are they for vaping. You said you were an electrical engineer, which are the best ones he can buy?

Hey, my Smok Mag-18 is always leaking!

So. Like I say, I like the dessert flavors. When my stuff gets here (Monday) I’ll be making some starting at 30/70 and 12 Mg Nic. Most of my recipes are between 20 to 30% flavoring. I like my Mag… Except that it leaks. Thought it was the nature of the game.

Love to hear some options. Can’t say money is no object, but you get what you pay for, right?

I don’t recommend dripping and driving. If you take out your part’s bag there will be a second pin that is hollow. It’s a bottom -feed pin. The pin works with squonk mods. The mod has a bottle in it that squirts the juice into an RDA from the bottom through the hollowed out tube to drench the cotton. Hence a squonk pin or bottom -feed pin.
