@SessionDrummer Thank you good sir!
Happens to me quite often when I am lazy wicking and either have the cotton too tight through the coil or too tight in the wells so it doesn’t “wet” the center of the cotton in the coil. Quite annoying when it happens and usually warns me with some dry hits before hand (which I ignore mostly ).
Doesn’t make any difference what brand of cotton I use, have even done it with KDG and with Muji. It is just too much cotton at either the middle or the ends, in my case anyway.
Thank you @Ianc13 I do believe that is my problem as well, particularly over stuffing the wells!
It’s a fine line sometimes @TimWV. I vape MTL and use 3mm ID coils so to get the right thickness through the coil whilst not overfilling the wells is quite hit and miss sometimes when I am rushed or lazy. I usually need to strip a fair amount of cotton from the tails so I don’t stuff the wells too much. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out that well… Lol.
Don’t kick yourself. That’s on Steam Crave. The well is just too small on that base.
@TimWV let me mention ONE more thing, that I THINK everyone knows, but you can always make mistakes. Making sure you cut the cotton the correct way, WITH the grain for wicking. I’ve actually cut AGAINST the grain before (when using square pads) and it didn’t wick very well.
Agreed, you can pack ANY cotton too tight.
@SessionDrummer I have made the mistake of cutting against the a couple times, i’m much more careful now lol
@Ianc13 you actually just brought up a VERY good point/observation/method.
The diameter of the coils AND the available space in the WELLS can be challenging at times to get BOTH right. I completely agree. Obviously (IMO) getting the correct thickness in the COIL is the top priority, as (assuming) if it is too thick or packed in the wells, you can always trim, thin, or v-cut as needed. GREAT point.
100% @SessionDrummer it is far easier to deal with the tails if the cotton through the coil is ok. I have even done more stripping of the tail after vaping for a while and noticing it wasn’t wicking very well. Helps that my RTA’s of choice I bottom fill, so I can check the cotton each time for how it is running.
Absolutely!
I remember having a certain MTL RDA that used to do this, I wouldn’t get any dry hits or burnt taste to warn me and the only sign I would get was that the vapour would drop off when I took a drag. When I’d go to pull the wick out of the coil it would come apart in two separate pieces from either end of the coil. What puzzled me was that although the cotton may have been a bit dirty from my juice there was no evidence of burning and it was as if it had just disintegrated in the middle.
@Lucas_James_Holden That’s what happened to me however, a couple times there was evidence of burning but not every time. Did you ever figure it out?
In case it helps… It seems obvious that the juice is not reaching the coil. It may be for any of these reasons or a combination of several:
Too much cotton in the coil. (prevents juice from reaching the center)
Little brushing of the tails. (blocks the wells and prevents the juice from reaching)
Queues too long. (the same as before). And as a bonus, very high VG juice, which can maximize any of the above.
@Gus6 thank you for your help. I believe a little of all those have contributed to my issues with the exception of the high VG, I usually mix at 70/30, 65/35, or 60/40 depending on the flavor profile I’m trying to achieve.
Again, thank you
I’m with SD on this one. Happens to me often and it’s always the wicking being too tight.
No I didn’t, I just put it down to one of those things. The thing was that I wicked this particular RDA exactly the same as I did with all of my other MTL RDA’s and I never had any problems with those.
@Lucas_James_Holden I did have 1 or 2 identical issues with a couple of my other RTA’s but after posting this issue and following some of the advice, I haven’t had any issues but it’s only been a couple of days. I see what happens a week down the road.
Thanks for responding!
