The rate has been gradually dropping for decades, due to cigarette taxes, tobacco product price hikes, smoking bans and changes in the social acceptability of lighting up in public.
The media would rather take a red-hot poker to the eye than credit vaping

Yep. I remember a few years ago reading two articles about teen smoking. One article, though they acknowledged the drop in teen smoking actually focused on the horror of the rise in teen vaping, not the drop in smoking. The other article actually highlighted that vaping was a good harm reduction alternative to teen smoking. I was pleased to see vaping get some credit in the one article.
