Since loads of people are switching from disposables to pod kits right now, I keep seeing the same handful of problems come up again and again. So I thought I’d put together a single go-to troubleshooting list — bookmark it, and hopefully it saves someone a binned device that was actually fine.
Most “broken” vapes aren’t broken at all. Here’s what’s usually going on:
1. Dry hit / burnt taste
The #1 complaint. Usually the coil isn’t fully wicked. Fixes: prime a new coil (drop e-liquid directly onto the cotton and let it sit 5–10 mins before first use), lower your wattage, and don’t chain-vape — give the wick a few seconds to re-soak between puffs. Sweet juices accelerate this (the sucralose caramelises onto the coil), so expect shorter coil life with dessert/candy flavours.
2. Gurgling / spitting
Too much liquid in the coil or flooding. Fixes: don’t over-prime, take slower softer draws, and check you’re not inhaling too hard for the airflow setting. A quick fix: take a couple of pulls with the device off to clear excess.
3. Leaking pods
Usually one of three things — overfilling (leave a small air gap, don’t fill to the brim), a temperature/pressure change (planes, hot cars), or a worn pod seal. Store upright, and if a specific pod always leaks, the seal’s gone — bin that pod, not the device.
4. No vapour / weak hits
Check the obvious first: battery charged? Pod clicked in fully? Then check for e-liquid on the contacts — wipe the bottom of the pod and the device connection with a dry tissue. Dirty contacts kill more devices than anything else.
5. Device won’t charge / won’t fire
90% of the time it’s the contacts again, or a dodgy USB-C cable. Try a different cable first before assuming the device is dead. Clean the charging port gently with a dry cotton bud.
6. Flavour has gone dull (“vaper’s tongue”)
Often it’s not the device — it’s you. Your taste adapts to a flavour you’ve used non-stop. Fixes: rotate between 2–3 flavours, drink more water, and try a sharp menthol to “reset” your palate.
7. Pod lasts way less than expected
High-sweetener juices, high wattage, and chain-vaping all shorten pod life. Drop the power a notch and rotate flavours — sweet ones gunk coils fast.
8. Harsh throat hit
Usually nicotine strength too high for your setup. Ex-disposable users on 20mg salt in a higher-airflow kit often find it harsh — either tighten the airflow (MTL) or step down the nic strength.
Golden rule for 90% of problems: clean the contacts, check the charge, re-prime the coil. That trio fixes most things people think are dead devices.
What have I missed? Drop your own go-to fixes below and I’ll add them — let’s make this the thread people get pointed to.
