I went to a couple of Royal Thai restaurants in my early trips. We quickly realized it was a waste of money because it was just the same food served in a fancier place. I’ve gotten food poisoning a few times around the world, but never in Thailand. One of the things I loved was eating outside all the time. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Thanks Joel but I’m definitely not buying cigarettes no matter what.
My wife went shopping today and bought me these as they were on special.
Kind of goes against the grain supporting big pharma but it’s better than smoking again.
And hand on heart I can honestly say I didn’t buy them so my conscious doesn’t feel as guilty!
A little update since it happened that I traveled to Thailand.
There are little street vendors which sell contraband cigarettes where they also sell disposables. Prices vary from 250 THB (6.6 USD) for a 600 puff disposable to 1100 THB (29 USD) for an rechargeable 11000 puff disposable. Nicotine levels are mentioned to be 30 mg/ml.
I could also get a Drag X for 2500 THB (66 USD) and a 60 ml of juice for 600THB (16 USD).
That still doesn’t mean the police will not charge you, but at minimum there’s supply.
Thanks for the up to date information.
I’m very tempted not to risk their border control but risk one of the street vendors you mention although it appears to me that whichever I decide is going to be a crap shoot.
Next time I’m going to ensure we visit a vape friendly country.
To date I’ve visited Dubai and Singapore and risked border control with no dramas but for some reason Thailand is worrying me more.
I wasn’t going to ask the question but I will.
I’m assuming you entered via a land border or did you run the gauntlet at an airport?
I’ve just read some articles about visiting Thailand and I must admit it doesn’t sound too safe!
Take carrying anything vape related out of the equation and it still appears a bit of a minefield, rather subduing my enthusiasm in taking the holiday. Even the Australian government’s trip advisory site doesn’t paint a particularly rosey picture.
I’m probably overthinking/worrying now but it’s not going to be much of a relaxing and enjoyable break if you’ve got to constantly be looking over your shoulder or concerned about scammers and corruption.
I entered via the airport, but didn’t bring any vape gear. I was very confident about my nicorette coolsdrops and they work fine.
I have been 20 times for work and for sure another 10 times for vacation in Thailand.
They are overall very gentle people and yes they may overcharge you as a foreigner the one or the other time. But if you pay USD 1.80 or 1.50 for a beer who cares. And that happens in a very low ratio.
Their police keeps crime under control when it comes to foreigners since tourists are a mayor contributor to their GDP.
Just stay away from drugs and don’t insult the king and you will be fine.
Relax and enjoy your vacation there!
Here the type of disposables they sell.
I would bet the Iced Watermelon tastes like 2% WS-23 and 8-10% CAP Double Watermelon.
Thanks very much for posting about your personal experiences and opinions as it has put my mind at rest a bit.
No intention of insulting anybody or going near any drugs but I do want to vape. I’ve never even tried a disposable but if that’s the best way to go perhaps I will. I just hope the vendor doesn’t ring his underpaid copper mate to put the shits up me if I do.
I spent 3 decades traveling the world. I’ve been to about 90 countries including a couple that no longer exist and in a few war zones. By far, the countries that most Westerners consider under developed, dirty and dangerous were the most interesting , exciting and memorable. Paris and Amsterdam are nice but Katmandu and Khartoum are exciting and will give you memories that last a lifetime.
Stop being afraid and get out of your comfort zone. As for Thailand, don’t do drugs, don’t argue with the Thais and always pay the bar girls in full. You do these things and you’ll be just fine.
First off, apologies for the long post…
G’day @Gazza7. For what it’s worth, I’d use those Nicorette lozenges on the plane and when you get to Thailand, take the plunge and get some disposables as mentioned by @SteveTC. Just be discreet and don’t go puffing away out in public. If you’re really busting, nip behind a bush or something. Maybe even in the dunny if you’re eating out at a restaurant or vape in your hotel room bathroom and blow into the exhaust fan (make sure you turn it on first) .
I’ve been to the LOS many, many times and can vouch that the locals, on the whole, are friendly and helpful people. Just remember not to judge, understand that their way is not our way and show them some respect. Do that and you’ll be good mate.
Yeah, some cops are “value add” with BS fines and so on but keep your head down and you should be fine. Even if they do force a BS fine on you, it won’t be much (by our standards anyway) and it’s just a way of supplementing their low wages. It’s understood and accepted that this is just how it is over there. Having said that, I’ve never encountered that once in the 15 or so times I’ve been there.
Last time I was in Thailand was 2017 and they hadn’t gone “hard core” at that stage so it was OK to vape in the street but I was always considerate enough to sit on a bench or make sure I was away from people when I was puffin’ away. And … I always hid my vape when I saw a police van coming up the road just to be safe . Haven’t been back since as in 2018 I had nearly paid off my mortgage and decided to forego that year and smash the mortgage (which I did) and then next thing you know, C19 arrived and stuffed everything up. Being unvaccinated I couldn’t go anywhere when the rules relaxed for the vaccinated but Thailand are now allowing unvaccinated travellers back in and your thread has reminded me of that so I might look into taking a trip myself sometime soon.
Anyway, hope you have a great time brother and stay safe. Oh, BTW, what part of the LOS are you going to? Just interested as my favourites were up north (Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai). Cheers…
If it wasn’t for the fact of the possibility of getting nicked for vaping I wouldn’t be in the least bit worried and do enjoy seeing other cultures and everything that entails. I always make a point of trying to leave the tourist traps and visit a ‘normal’ area to see how the locals live for at least one day.
As any other holiday I’d be ticking down the days.
Phuck it then? 20 years too late. Just kiddin, have a good time!
@Gazza7, don’t wanna put a downer on your trip mate but @Mikser is sort of right. Phuket was much better back in the day. That’s not to say you won’t have a great time though. Not a fan of “touristy” stuff myself but you gotta take a visit down Bangla Road one night just for shits’n’giggles (Katoeys). Looking forward to hearing how you went. Have fun . Cheers.
There was a Canadian travel show, with 2 guys that dropped out of University to travel the world… They did 3-4 episodes of Thailand and I was really amazed at the cool shit there, one of the coolest things they had filmed was a Buddhist statue, a head, that was on the ground and tree roots had grown over and surrounded it… Can’t remember the name, but here is a picture:
We have a large Fillipino, Korean and Chinese population here. Worked with all kinds of people but never really met an Asian person I didn’t like… They’re kind, respectful and hard workers… Would even feed me too!
Thailand is truly a lovely country. The food is one of the top 3 cuisines. The people are generally friendly as long as they’re treated properly.
Did you see the recent movie about those kids in the cave from a few years back? It’s interesting.
One of the best things about Thailand is the Puritans never landed there.
Big agree on the Thai cuisine… I’ve been making my own thai stir fries and while not doing the greatest I have a Bird’s Eye chili growing… Fortunate enough to have a husband and wife nearby with a small hole in the wall restaurant and she’s straight from Thailand and he’s Albertan that runs the front. Amazing people and some of the best food I’ve ever had.
And that’s a negatory on the film, I think the last movie I watched was Rogue One, the star wars flick and prior to that was like Avatar… Don’t watch movies at all.
