Excellent Horror/Thriller/Suspense film.
Warning: If you are sensitive to graphic violence against Children or Animals. This is not the film for you.
As I am back to my February theme, tonightâs film will be Galaxy of Terror.
This is an alien rip-off which has a very interesting tale:
Though it is listed as directed by Bruce D. Clark, most of the movie (from set design, production, projection, editing and second unit direction) was done by a drop-out called James Cameron.
This movie led to the first movie were he was supposed to direct (the history of Piranha 2 is complicated) but due to many issues it put him down the road to directing The Terminator and using the ideas he had developing during and before his Corman days into another minor movie: Aliens.
Oh and the key parts: This is the maggot rape movie and Robert Englundâs first time living his dream of being in a Corman movie.
So, Galaxy of Terror is a rip-off of Alien, though one which led to the creation of The Terminator and then Aliens: As such, it is a rip-off which was ripped-off in a sequel.
Trailers for the original release as Mind Warp and its later reissues as Galaxy of Terror:
The original Mind Warp:
The Galaxy of Terror reissue:
There are later recuts with extended maggot moments, though those of you perverted enough to want to watch them can track them down yourselves.
I was pondering having my movie of the day as a true story based on a true story:
The urban legend of a woman trying to find the buried ransom money detailed in Fargo.
As Iâve had an annoying day (another chapter in my Royal Mail saga) so I really wanted to choose a fun action movie for my ROROW OIVSTTO (remakes or rip-offs where one is vastly superior to the others).
Tonight will be True Lies. It is a remake of the French movie La Totale. Some scenes between the two are similar (some will spot a few in the trailer alone), though the heavier action focus is all due to Arnold: He was the one to first suggest the remake to James Cameron and it became one of the best action movies in history and one of the last to represent Islamic terrorists as comical characters - Team America: World Police being the last and most glorious until Four Lions came out (Which all my Muslim friends love).
Yes, there is also a reboot of True Lies and I have no intention of watching it. But it means it satisfies the remake and reboot criteria.
Points for spotting that the cobbles in Paris are all shaped like croissants.
I can vouch for Team America. Yet ANOTHER movie that could NOT be made today.
Though we all need more movies like it to satirise the world we live in more than ever.
While hunting for other movies, I spotted Demon House and remembered it as a documentary I wanted to watch years ago.
The style is certainly more mature than the original documentary by Zack Bagans which led to the Ghost Adventures series being commissioned. In fact, this is more of a documentary about trying to make a documentary.
Additionally, most of the evidence is purely phenomenological and he seems to being more sceptical regarding some claims. This is one point where the linear thread he was creating becomes unravelled a bit and made me ponder if the growing controversy around, and admission that, the Dybbuk Box was a complete hoax was influencing him (though it wasnât until 2021 that it was admitted to in public, claims regarding it being fake, by the original seller, date back to 2014 when Jack was recording this documentary).
But, the lesson of this documentary is that playing too much with ghosts may make you go blind. And, it wasnât even a Succubus!
Tonightâs February themed film shall be:
The Fast and the Furious. Yes, the action-packed adrenalin ride made by Roger Corman.
(Itâs a rare event when I can easily share a whole movie).
Roger, being the wily Pope of Popcorn Cinema that he is, signed over the title rights for itâs slower paced and balder reimaginings for access to Univeralâs stock footage archive.
Vin Dieselâs Et Als efforts have got progressively worse to the downright ridiculous.
I quite enjoyed the first one but it was downhill from there. I appreciate its Hollywood and the next has to be bigger and better but I also think a little more in the realms of believable would help.
They ruined the series when they went from ordinary street racers that steal stuff to international crime fighters that have super powers. Still, when you can shut your brain functions off and remove any form of logical thought, they are fun to watch
I must admit that Iâve only seen two of them: The first one and the one with the submarine.
I preferred the latter as it was so clearly taking the piss.
Indeed and silly movies only work, if all know it is silly.
Well, a think anyone aware of my taste in films would be expecting tonightâs choice in my February of ROROW OIVSTTO - Evil Dead 2 (or, La Casa 2 for Italian watchers, though the whole La Casa series and the odd naming conventions is worthy of a movie in its own right).
Why wouldnât I choose it? It is a glorious horror movie which is a sequel, a remake and a spoof all rolled into one demented package.
The reason why I class it as a remake is due to Sam Raimi not having the rights to the original, so the start of Evil Dead 2 is a retelling of the first movie. And, with the ending to ED2 setting up Army of Darkness, even though that was Raimiâs original plan for the second movie. Not confusing at all. Although, some of the scripts floating around would make an Evil Dead multiverse.
Oh, and the 2013 remake is still worth a watch: I avoided it for a good few years but found it to be a viable spiritual successor. I think Iâve already given it my personal stumps up for it on this thread.
Tonight will be my favourite remake of all time: The 1986 Little Shop of Horrors.
It rivals The Blues Brothers when it comes to the best musical ever made (maybe with Moulin Rouge and Hedwig and the Angry Inch battling for 3rd place). And, that is not a hyperbolic overstatement.
The intro - just to show how great it is.
And, the dentist scene to show the cute madness of it all:
I will watch the darker Directorâs Cut version which is more of a European style cut: Yanks cannot cope with good people dying in films.
HUGE SPOILERS! This is end of the DC version: in case you cannot get it yourselves.
Tonightâs pick will be the 1982 beast in the Carpenter Apocalypse Trilogy - The Thing.
Though originally written as a partial remake of The Thing from Another World, it later leaned into being an adaptation of Who Goes There? - The original tale both movies drew upon.
Yes, there is a prequel, and I do class it as an acceptable piece of media: Itâs just a shame that the producers decided to cover ADIâs exceptional practical work with half-arsed CGI.
I like when Bossman was trying to get Gary into the Limo. Hilarious!
Well, as Mrs. Squirrel sometimes asks if I am from Mars (the Mandarin equivalent to âliving under a rockâ), I thought it was time to get my ass there.
As such, tonightâs choice is the 1990 Total Recall:
It was a tough choosing which Paul Verhoeven movie that had a remake, reboot or reimagining to choose but, this won out as I view it as one of the best action movies ever made: You can enjoy it as a fun bit of popcorn fodder, though if you go deeper: Youâll see the nuance and threads which show that all is not as it seems and completely changes how you view the movie.
A layer that is subtler than the Jesus allegory in RoboCop, and people missed that when he is walking on water!
âTotal Recallâ was an outstanding movie. Makes me wonderâŚwhere would SciFi movies be without Philip K. Dick !!
He did inspire a fair few. Although, luckily everyone ignored his titles when they put them on film.
