So, I decided to adopt Trigger into my life:
I might get myself a Del Boy.
An odd choice but each to their own. I’m more of an Uncle Albert man myself.
“Confused as a newt” being a subtle classic.
Odd people tend to make odd choices.
Except if two odds agree on the same decision.
True. But the odder you are, the likelihood of that happening will be quite small.
Indeed, I am still waiting for further funding for my research regarding the antigravitational potential of coiled copper drives verses one relying on a cat with buttered toast strapped to its back.
Isn’t he the writer of Guns, Germs and Steel and The World Until Yesterday?
Yep, that’s the guy. In Why Sex is Fun, he goes through genetics in a light-hearted and engaging way. I always recommend it as a good introduction to genetics and Darwin (along with his errors - though the epigenetics debate is still ongoing).
Also, It makes an exceptional coffee-table book.
I will add it to the list. Apart from the physical books in my possession, I have at least 2000 e-books and I can only read one at the time.
Another reason I don’t play video games. I didn’t even get to do the series of Nerdles that is a part of my daily routine.
It’s 00:12 and the day, not the Universe, has just reset.
Oh I have more in physical books. Mrs. Squirrel always rolls her eyes when I return with more.
She now partially accepts that some information cannot be found via digital means and that I prefer the feel of Morocco or vellum binding.
I can relate to that. I love holding a book. The problem is space. Digital also has the advantage that I can crawl into bed, turn off the light and get my reader with backlight out.
Heavy books are a lot easier to handle in digital form.
Before my iPod crashed I would listen to an audiobook. The luxury.
C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters read by John Cleese was a real joy to listen to.
I must have listened to that at least 4 times.
I have not listened to that reading of Screwtape and I do enjoy when perceived evil is treated as the protagonist: Ian McDiarmid’s reading of Paradise Lost is just glorious.
Oddly, I used to sell around 10 first editions of Screwtape a year back in the day: Being a bibliophile Methodist preacher back then, I tended to be asked to look at collections and that, along with 19thc editions of The Book of Enoch, passed through my hands a lot.
Here’s a recording of it. It is listed as 10 books as this audio-book uses the 1667 first edition and not the second - with the 12.
But having the Emperor as Satan removes any doubts regarding its merit.
Thank you very much. You just made me smile.
And now you have a full night’s worth of listening.
I must admit the trick of Miltonic English at the start always gets me: There are many lines of test before the key verb is used in “sing heavenly muse”.
Check out an email I got at work a couple of weeks ago. Jesus, Mary & Joseph, you’d think they’d be smarter and not use names of internationally known Aussie actors when trying to con people. This had me chuckling for hours .
Woolworths still existing would be the red flag for me.
Talking about internationally known people, I got this one in December 2022.
