I lived in the Canyon next to Zappa, was an engineer on his first ābigā gig, at the Ventura county fair.
He was a strange dude, and a complete genius. Dylan was a ānewcomerā at that time.
Frankās in-home studio was the most sophisticated available at the timeā¦better than RCA records studio downtown.
Other ālater famousā musicians, that lived in the Canyon, would beg him to record there [in his home]. It would have been phenomenal to have had some early [professional] recordings from Zappaās studio, by some folks like Janis Joplin, David Crosby, Grace Slick, Jim Messina, and many othersā¦but Frank, a musician, did not associate with themā¦for only one reason, and the same reason he would never let them recordā¦he was astutely anti-drug and alcohol. He didnāt need drugs, he was permanently high on some kind of [kryptonite].
Almost all of his albums were recorded ONLY by him, in his home.
Gaze at the sky
And picture a memory
Of days in your life
