@sthrnmixer wow! thanks for turning me on to Candy Dulfer! Awesome!

@ozo Never would have guessed you for a reggae fan! Too cool!

@BoyHowdy yeah, Sungha is pretty incredible!

I’ve always been a fan of great brass sections as well…

Yeah, that’s the thing about old age…you’ve had time
to learn about and experience many great things in this world.
Music happens to be one of them, listening and playing.
Music has carried me over many rocky intersections in life.

You and me both man! I’ve played one instrument or another since I was about 6 yrs old.

Started with guitar (which was too big for me at that age) so I went to violin, which I stuck with for a few years. I’ve also played trombone, tri’s, quads, xylophone, trap set, dabbled a little with keys, but came back full circle to guitar.

I relate almost everything in my life to music in one way or another (… And of course, that phrase alone by my inherent ā€œwiringā€ auto-triggers the old Blondie song. ><) I can’t even read/write or think without music being referenced 80% or more of the time.

This was the first time I ever say Sungha Jung play … at his age then, I was totally blown away by his impeccable technique. He plays like he has been studying for at least 50 years …

It took me a while to get used to playing with finger picks, especially the thumb pick because it’s length. I do play a lot of fingerstyle guitar but growing up, I always used a hybrid style of picking using both a pick (Fender Heavy Abalone) and my fingers. In the last 10 years or so, I have been using finger picks a lot more but after an hour or so, I go back to my hybrid style of picking that I grew up learning.

I had hand surgery on my left hand so I moved to slide guitar and lap steel . I can play leads but I can’t play chords anymore . But the finger picks are just hard to get used to so I just use my fingers

I am sorry to hear that … If I too were unable to play chords anymore I would switch to slide myself. Have you considered playing in open tunings? Open D for example from low to high is D A D F# A D … with a similar tuning, you can simply barre all six strings to form a full major chord.

I started playing on a Conn classical guitar, fingers only. Never used picks since. Besides, picks are overrated!! …

Yeah … I can see your point but I guess it all comes back to style and preference. If I am playing a classical piece I surely wouldn’t use a pick either.
