When to replace coil / wick?

Today I used my very first prebuilt coil, now I’m curious how long do you typically use a coil and wick? Do you wait until you change juice, or do you wait until there is a flavor change that is undesirable ? Do you always change the coil and wick together ? I filled my tank with a juice that I have close to 60 ml’s of, will I be able to use the same coil and wick to vape that amount?
I have to say thank you ! , everything I know about this hobby that I love, has come from you folks. Thank you for sharing all the information that you have so generously offered here on e-Liquid Recipes.

Awesome! Making your own coils is fun and cost pennies in the long run.

What kind of wore did you use? And what do you use to wick with? Cotton, rayon, hemp, other?

Thanks TinMan, I used a pre-built coil an Eleaf Clapton and the cotton that came with the Limitless XL. I did the single coil build.

The coil should last you a good bit of time. Months. The cotton will need to be change as flavor fades or if you get an off taste. Normally on cotton I would change it about every 3-4 days.

When you remove your cotton you will need to dry burn your coils. You want to do this slowly by holding the fire buttton a few seconds, pause, fire a few seconds, pause, repeat. This will clean the gunk from the coils. I would start out at about 16 watts and use do the pulse and release about 5 times and bump it up 2 watts from there until your coil goes from black and gunky to nice and clean.

It’s a difficult one, I don’t think you can truely put a time on a coils longevity but when I was using kangertech SSOCC’s they would last around 1 week before I got a weird / burnt taste

Thanks guys, that’s just what I wanted to know.

I change cotton as soon as the taste gets funky or drops considerably. Coils I rebuild when they start to gunk too easily. A fresh coil tastes different compared to dry burned coils to me. Not majorly but wrapping coils gets faster the more you practice. I drip more than anything so it’s relatively easy to throw on new coils for the best taste I can achieve. About 2 weeks max is my latest preference on coils.

I’ve been averaging about 11 days on a wick, unless I burn the cotton. I make a new coil when changing the wick simply because I like making the coils and for the practice, which is paying off.

Normally I replace the cotton every week or so on my two drippers that I switch between. Typically when the flavor is off or the coil is gunk’ed up a bit. I’ll dry burn my ss316L coils at the point…clean everything up.

Typically I will put in a new coil after the third dry burn or when I have time. Typically I force myself to do that after the third dry burn. Coils are cheap when you make them yourself.

I tend to change cotton every week or so, really as soon as things start to taste funny. Clip one end off the cotton, pull it out without messing up the coil (mine are ss 316l), pulse it, brush it with a brass wire brush to clear the ash / carbon, pulse it more, let it cool, rewick, see you in a week. I go as much as a couple months without changing the wire.

I would say i rewick every 3-4 days or something like that even if the wick looks nice, that way i can keep it fresh and optimize flavors and vaping experience. I change coils when i feel they have done their job and that is normally every 3 weeks or so.

I appreciate everyones input, like most the issues dealing with DIY these things are left up to personal preference. Yet for those of us that are new and don’t know a thing these posts are very helpful guides to go by. Thank you all who took the time to post and share your techniques.

I re-wick whenever it seems I am having to increase my power up much higher than I normally vape at if I don’t notice a big flavor change (for the bad). I’ll check out the coils if/when I do and change them out if necessary (ss coils). I don’t normally need to re-wick for 2-3 weeks, and I am a fairly heavy vaper (BaN as an ADV in one tank and some type of fruit in another). The type of juice you vape may determine how fast the coils will gunk up, that and wattage.

Definitely, quite a few factors to consider when determining coil longevity.

I re-wick my rayon every 100 - 150ml (about once a month since I keep 4 mods in daily rotation) but could likely go a lot longer if I were any lazier. Many have reported going 200 - 300ml between re-wick with rayon.

The more the merrier, and then the coils last longer too. But I have a primary vape I use most often, Starre Pure on a Smok Alien.

But compared to buying a carton of ciggs this is sooo cheap even if I have to buy a coil every month! I can buy 56 coils for what I spent a month on stinkies! Every 15 ciggs I could buy a new Starre Pure coil! I could buy 1.4 coils for each 1 days worth of smokes!
