Coil Building Show Offs (Part II)

I’ve been looking at things from time to time but the gap between wanting and needing one is still too big. It’s not always possible but I try not to piss off my wife too often, I have too many expensive addctions already.

Yeah, I’m having a hard time trying to justify one too. Gotta go and look for ā€œjustifiableā€ reasons to get one.

A combination of these two methods were the means of learning how to make my own fused and staggered fused claptons

If you combine the two, you won’t need two vises. Just an anchor point for your swivels.

Cheers Michael! I’m always experimenting now I’m a bit brain stuck on building twisted ropes for my genisis.

Oh man, I used to love Ohmboy Josh, I hope he is doing ok. It was his tutorial on Aliens that I was finally able to make a pair.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a pretty cool shop.

Sure thing. Sorry it’s gonna cost you money LOL

Some of my work:

I just started to get into staggered builds last month. I’ve made probably a lifetime supply of alien wire. Got sick of making aliens and fraliens so I decided to explore a new avenue. It’s been a little challenging. It’s a total change of pace. I was used to flying right through alien wraps. I had to slow everything way down.

Very nice and very jealous!

Nicely done man. I haven’t built any coils in over a year. Totally changed the way I vape. Anyway, staggered fused claptons and staggered staple were always my favorite to vape from and those are what I liked to make but DAMN would it give me a headache. It was the magnifying glass that did it. LOL You did a good job coiling them. That was always the hardest part for me.

Anywho, you should start a Coil Building Show Offs (Part III) when you post new pics, it’s about time anyway.

Nice work

So far I’ve just used the end of a BB gun scope to sneak peeks at what’s going on occasionally. I can kind of see what’s going on but when somethings not right, I need to see how it looks before I fix it. I might have to order a headset or something else to make things a bit easier. Not sure how many of those coils I want to make. I haven’t even tried one yet. I love the regular staggered clapton wire though.

When I first tried staggering with thin wire, I didn’t realize going slower was better. It helped a lot. Adding ribbon to the mix makes it even harder.

and some…

which one?

This is what I use but the price wasn’t that high. I also have a clamp if I want to clamp it to the desk. I’m in love with it but I thought I would put it out there so you can look to see what you like.

I got a headset too but they are so powerful I have to get right on top of the wire and that gets to be a PITA. Anyway, Have fun…

I could have sworn I posted a photo because, without it, this post makes little to no sense. :upside_down_face:

i have a headset, but it gives me double vision. i need to try adjusting it. this is exactly why i don’t build much, and why i am not better.

I’ve found that using a decent pair of cheater reading glasses 2.5X or greater helps a lot for close-up work and eliminates a lot of the double vision that headsets create. A lot cheaper too. Personally I prefer the half lenses, so I can look over them with regular vision. Worth a shot and only a couple of bucks at a dollar store. Take a coil with you to the store so you can check out what works best before you buy.

i have and use readers, but they are not enough for me. right after i got Lasik many years ago, i could have built with nothing on, easily. would be really nice if they made 7-8X readers .

I don’t know what you mean… I’ve used regular staggered claptons and love them. I’ve made a few staple staggered but haven’t tried any yet.

I’ve tried reading glasses and they help… I don’t need to wear them the whole time, just for fixing mistakes. My favorite magnification device is from a BB gun scope. I took the end piece off of it and use it as a tool. I just hold it up to my eye and I can really see what’s going on. The scope was never used so I just took it apart. I’ll post some photos of it:

I doubt anybody else would think to use something like that lol. It works great for quick peeks. My eye sight has always been above average. Never needed glasses and could read the bottom line during eye tests. I also use the scope piece to take close up photos of my coils. I need to start buying things that were made for job they do. It’s a great dual purpose tool though.

Whatever works, brother. Whatever works.

I used to do a lot of model building and found a pair of eyeglass style magnifiers that worked wonders for detailed work, but I lost them. I believe they were adustable to 6x/8x magnification with independent eye adjustments. Haven’t thought of them in awhile. Gonna have to do an amazon search…

First foray into SS316L, and wow, it is a lot harder to coil than A1 ! But eh, maybe I need to heat it with a gun or something first? Seems to play a lot nicer once you have run a few watts through it anyway.

6 threads of 28G, flat wire, twisted with a drill, love the flavour!

Yeah flat and high guage wires can be difficult. 22 - 28g is no problem though. I will usually give flats a run through with a culinary torch to make it a bit less springy. Or just leave it as is, so I can exorcise my inner demons.
