DIY E-liquid Journey So Far - MTL/POD/SALT

Diy E Liquid Journey

All started because disposable vapes will be banned in UK soon and also because i wanted to clone my favourite flavour that I have not been able to source in a decade: Mr Goodvape Hedon’s Bite.

  1. Using a Vaperesso Xros 4. Pods are 0.4 ohm. (Can be 0.6 or 0.8 if req)

  2. Bought PG and VG separate. Using nicotine salts.

Week 1

  1. Made a batch of clone recipe and steeped for a week (45 min warm bath after mixing). Mix was 70/30 vg/pg.

Week 2

  1. Tried it out. Noticed it didn’t vape as easily and gurgled a bit. Produced vapour but very little taste.

  2. Researched that nic salts mute flavours. Increased flavour by 50 percent. Steeped for another week. Didn’t bath - the mix, not me

Week 3

  1. Still tasted very weak. An improvement, but still shit.

  2. Researched that i could be used to the commercial vapes with high sugar content and extreme flavouring. Also researched that I should be using 50/50 vg/pg. (Is that what the ready made ones are?)

  3. I now have about 30 flavouring concentrates for multiple recipes I’ve found. This is before I have managed to get the initial mix working. What have I got myself into?

  4. Next step I’ll boost the pg in original mix to approx 50/50. It will be rough because I’ve used some liquid in pods and need to find a way to extract them back and clean them out. Read that syringing out is best. Could wash out with pg. Seems like a proper blag to test with pods.

Also going to mix other flavours. Probably only do recipes I’ve found specifically for mtl/pod/salts until I know the golden ratio for alteration. Having said that, my worries are that it’s not as simple as applying an overall percentage change to flavours to convert to mtl/pod/salt and taste the same. It may not even be possible. I’d be happy with similar. Recent research shows creams, custards and other dessert flavours may not come through in a pod due to the low wattage.

Note: initially when purchasing flavours I avoided anything with diktones for safety. Upon further research it seems that the excessive fear over this seems unreasonable. If it’s true that levels of these toxins are about 1 percent of that of a cigarette, I’m fine with the risk.

Week 4

Actioning 9.

If anybody could chime in and give me some heads up if I’m going in the wrong direction anywhere I’d appreciate it. After lurking around here for a few weeks I fear that many dont use pods. My main reason for purchase was the simplicity and that the Vaperesso tends not to leak. Back in the day (before disposable) i used to have a larger vape but the chambers always leaked no matter what.

Edit: Interested in if i can expedite the testing or just wait a week for steeping for flavours to come through.

you should post a link to the recipe(s) you are talking about
and maybe a link to your flavor stash

Added the links… they’ve appeared strange but hopefully work?

When I first started vaping I had leak issues with bottom airflow atomizers. There’s newer RTAs that don’t leak, I exclusively use top airflow and I think it has great flavor. I can let them roll around. As long as my tank is only a quarter full when I lay it down for the night, it doesn’t flood. I’ve noticed if I try to lay down a tank that’s over half full it floods, but definitely doesn’t leak.

As for pods, it is true that most recipes are tuned for sub ohm devices. I’ve heard that some pods have great flavor, but Ive never personally used them. I’ve seen people say for pods to up flavor % but I’m not sure how much. I’ve always wondered if the older recipes from like 2015 would work better for pods, because I think they were tailored for MTL vaping.

I remember when I first started mixing, I wanted to clone a disposable flavor, I gave up on it. I think part of the problem is those disposables are made in China. So, I think it’s all some flavor that’s specifically formulated in labs China. Where as, the eLiquids we buy here commercially may use the same exact flavor concentrates we can buy. Sometimes e liquid manufacturers can contract labs to make their own proprietary flavor.

As for tasting stuff, at least for sub ohm, when I first made the switch it was terrible. I was very disappointed, but Im stubborn so I kept trying. It took me months to finally make something I was wow’ed about, but it just kept getting easier since then.

And lastly…just on a side note, I’ve been mixing for like 2 years now, but just a couple days ago realized that switching to NETs, naturally extracted tobacco, for a day or so just completely rejuvenated my taste buds. I could taste things I couldn’t taste before.

nothing you mix is going to hit like a disposable, it cannot be replicated in a refillable device, they use a different wicking material/process inside then the standard coil and cotton we use in refillables. So unfortunately you need to lower your expectations. I mix a ton of MTL Pod recipes. If I know what you like I can point you in the right direction. If you like fruits check out this one, you can leave out the ice (ws-23) or increase it too 2% if you like

if you like dessert ish tobacco flavors this is one of my favorites,

both of them work well in the Xros 4 or any pod system 50/50

Thanks for the advice.

Regarding the flavour being different to disposable: what about similar to the refillable liquid i get from vaperesso?

I really just need to mix a pod/salts recipe so i can get an idea of what can be achieved.

Thanks for the recipes - i may try the grape one!

Thanks for your insight!

I dont actually have any questions relating to your response.

The new rta’s not leaking is good news. I may transition but for now i want to keep using the pods if possible

Its actually not really the wicking material or the coil used in a disposable, i mean sure the condensed nature of the dispo’s coil does contribute a little but nothing game changing, disposables actually use very old coil tech tbh, try emptying a disposables juice & putting it into something like an xlim pod, it will taste exactly the same as the disposable did, if you are attempting to mix for a disposable type recipe it can indeed be done but you need the right ingredients (ie sweetener, you are never going to replicate a disposable with .75 ws23 & super sweet, the ws needs to be at least 3/4x that & you need neotame.

For a simple disposalike recipe for a pod try this -
6% FA forest fruit
4% SSA forest fruit
6% SSA juicy cherries
6% SSA raspberry blackberry
2.5% ws23
1% super sweet
1.25% neotame (NOMZ mega sweet works too)

This will get you extremely close to feeling like a disposable. This is what got my daughter away from disposables even after trying almost every commercial nic salt you can think of.

I mean you are never going to 100% replicate a dispo, as in clone one per se, but its not as hard as you make out to get the exact same level of flavour/punch in a pod.

I thought the UK was vape friendly, that NHS promoted it. Why the ban?

Its only the ones with throwaway batteries getting banned as far as im aware? They are being phased out for those ivg ones etc that you just buy prefilled pods for, still the same taste as a normal dispo but without having to throw away the battery.

That is a lot of flavouring!

I’m going to have to get some nomz mega sweet in that case. Even if its too sweet for me, i know with some people its a dealbreaker for the sweetness not to be there.

Yeah it definitely is a lot, i personally cant vape that much sweetener but my daughter likes it coming from disposables. I rarely vape pods though tbh only when creating recipes for people, but when comparing this side by side with a blueberry cherry disposable the resemblance is definitely there, just always remember sweetness is a preference & can be altered to your liking.

If you are in the UK you can actually buy proper neotame already mixed/diluted. Check out neo sweet on the e-eig shop, but nomz mega sweet works pretty much the same as any neotame i have tried.

Also worth noting, when i mix that recipe for myself to vape i usually drop 1% off each flavour, & half the super sweet, the neotame i keep the same because it doesnt get overly sweet like super sweet does. If its disposables you want to replicate then neotame is a must because you just cant get that disposable level of sweetness with sucralose without it turning syrupy & sickening.

Try a 50/50 or 60vg/40pg ratio…

also does your disposables usually have cooling? Grab some Neotame or Capella Extra Sweet. You will never be able to get close unless your sweet content os high enough and in disposables its high.

Welcome and glad you joined.

Funny you should mention the neotame again because found the same i did! Althouh at 17 percent if i was making 10ml tester i would have to dilute further in PG.

I also found TFS mega sweet which i might try. Ingredients unknown but prob a mix of sweeteners likely included neotame. (The description says its supposed to make diy e liquids taste like disposables).

If i mix your recipe ill start off with your altered version!

Mr good vape was started by Gary Riddle but I believe he may have sold the rights to the brand to another company (NJOY). If it was created by Gary the recipe would most likely be CAP and TPA based like most of his creations. And also a total % closer to 20% @50/50 VG/PG would be closer to the original.

Going down neotame road most likely.

I usually avoid any menthol or ice flavour. However i havent really tried it in smaller diy doses. I bought ws23, koolada and polar blast the experiment. Out of the 3 after further research, koolada sounds more interesting to me.

Mix that grappleberry recipe, I’ve yet to find a person that didn’t enjoy it, I mix it for many people, salt nic, freebase 50/50 or 70/30 for the big tanks. If your want it crazy sweet like a dispo use up too 2% Capella Super Sweet but be prepared to change your coil/pod often.

Also to achieve a disposable type vape with a subohm type coil try using a lower ohm coil .4 or less with adjustable airflow, vaping around 40-50watts and dial it into your own preference. A lot of disposables use high flavor concentration of the e-liquid, somewhere around 30% to achieve maximum flavor.

Clearly you know your shit!

Knowing the brands he used will def help refine the recipe when i come to altering it. Is it still sold in US or is it really old news now?
