Glad to have you on board Dusty!
So a few of mine steeped a week, and unfortunately it seems like the balance is off. At first, as a shake and vape, the mixes seemed balanced, but just a tad sharp. I let them sit for 3-7 days before trying again, and basically all of them changed. The sharpness was tamed, and the creams came through, but the strawberries and cake are way off. On some mixes I canât taste the cake, and on others I canât taste the strawberry.
A typical SSC (food) recipe called for:
Strawberries + Whipped Cream
- 6â7 cups quartered strawberries
- 1/4 cup + 2 Tablespoons (75g) granulated sugar, divided
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
Biscuits
- 2 and 3/4 cups (345g) all-purpose flour, plus extra for hands and work surface*
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 4 teaspoons aluminum free baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt (I recommend fine sea salt)
- 3/4 cup (12 Tbsp; 170g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 cup (240ml) cold buttermilk*
- 2 Tablespoons (30ml) heavy cream or buttermilk
- coarse sugar, for sprinkling
So I tried to follow this recipe and translate it into e liquid, but unfortunately itâs not working out.
Does anyone know a way to make strawberries or cookies pop? I know a touch of dragonfruit or raspberry works for SB, and a touch of AP for biscuits/cakes, but are there any other tricks I should be aware of? Iâm definitely overthinking these recipes, but as it is necessary to use two strawberries, I kind of wanted to make sure the creams and cake held up. But they didnât. Ugh.
I need to order more PG/VG and bottles after this contest.
Oo thats a SB i have not tried yet!
Im sad Nom Nomz isnt one of the approved vendors, but Bull City, Flavor Jungle, MF and DIY cover a pretty good selection, to be sure!
Easiest way: Make 3-4 most popular highly rated recipes of that profile. Youâd get an idea what is missing, what is working and what else might work next time, plus whatâs making those recipes so balanced and tasty. Recreate your own based on those experiences (by learning from the best). In worst case scenario you will learn whatâs working, what you like, learn about the flavors interactions and which are more appropriate to use. Plus youâll most probably end up with mixes that are at least somehow delightful to vape.
Harder way: try to make it from the scratch. Youâll need 50+ variations and 3 months at least and you wonât come much closer unless youâre a genius mixer (which noone really is early in the mixing career). Youâll learn more from the first example, plus youâll throw most of them in the toilet unless youâd want to torture yourself purely because itâs your âownâ creation. Eventually, when you would create something that you would like, you will figure it out that someone else had used pretty similar ingredients years before, so your creation will eventually be just a version of that (and noone will recognize it as âyoursâ or appreciate it as much as they should since itâs evidently so delightful and unique in itâs own way).
Thats what makes strawberry shortcakes hard. Cream often mute cakes and when you get the creams and cake right it often mutes the fruit. You really have to get the balance right and think outside the box.a real good shortcake recipe is gonna require tricks
The part i struggke with on this profile is i cant be sure if the strawberry is coming through or not cuz i cant really taste them so its more of just guesswork on that part
I just wanted to remind everyone that they donât necessarily have to do a traditional Strawberry Shortcake recipe. The recipe should have some kind of bakery aspect, not just a cake, two different strawberries and a cream layer of some sort. Look on the web for variations on a strawberry shortcake, such as cream pies, milkshakes, cocktails Etc. I think the judges would look forward to some diversity. The winning recipe could be something where some thought outside the box.
Iâm not too sure about that @McDuckie . I believe they want to have exactly those 3 items so they can make direct comparisons. Strawberries (fruit) + shortcake (bakery) + whipped cream (dairy).
It canât just be âstrawberries prepared in any formâ we might like. Thatâs my understanding anywayâŠand I may be wrong.
Shhh. Dont tell them that lol
I donât know? I thought strawberry shortcake theme was what Rocky said. And to me a shortbread crust is pretty similar.
Iâm not participating, Just trying to help out my fellow mixers with interesting ideas.
Yea it should be any type of strawberry shortcake or at least thats what i took from it. I personally would rather have a little debbie type shirtcake roll over a fresh real strawberry shortcake from a bakery
You mean like a swiss roll filled with strawberry? YES PLEASE
Or do you mean a chocolate HO HO with strawberry filling? OH HELL YES
I guess the picture of cheesecake threw me off.
You are 100 pct correctâŠwe want a bakery , cream and sb liquidâŠThe notes are going to be so important . If someine does a SB shortcake ice cream sandwich and doesnt put descent notes we are going to have a hard time knowing why you did whateverâŠ
No choco , bo blueberry or tobacco âŠYou can use a Sb booster like say yumberry , raspberry , dragin fruit , a touch of lemon BUT that flavor should only be helping the SB note
Darn no chocolate shortcakes smothered in fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Bummerđ„ș
Well, guess I was wrong. I thought it had to be like the picâŠstrawberries, shortcake & whipped cream.
So, I can make a SBSC milkshake? SBSC ice cream sundae? SBSC cheesecake?
I think we are looking for the best Strawberry Shortcake recipe, but feel free to put your own twist on it, (but that could hurt in the final scoring)
As long as there is a presence of the Cake , Cream and StrawberryâŠWeather its cheecake , ice cream , milkshake etc etc its gking to come across as a cream once you add the SB and Cake
Okee dokeeâŠtime for me to start over then.
