This MOD is also sold as part of a kit if you want to run the Z Sub-Ohm Tank which uses the Z Series Mesh Coils. For the purposes of this review, I’ll just be focusing on the Aegis Legend 5 MOD.

Looking at the specs/features it looked like the 5th rev. had almost everything you needed, and none of the fluff you didn’t.

Packed snugly in the familiar orange/black trademark packaging …

After removing the sleeve, I always love the Black Monolith look …

This may sound silly but I LOVE it when companies add “pull tabs” because there’s nothing worse than getting a new box, and you CAN’T get the equipment out …

Information, warning card, and user’s manual …

Along with a first rate USB-C cable, just in case you didn’t already have one …

If you’re like me, and you thought you’d never like an “Earth Brown”, think again …

I own quite a few of the previous Legends, but the new colors, and more modern styling were a welcome change …

Completely stealth when dark, with a slim, but clicky fire button and adjustment paddle switch …

Side Shot …

Other side with the A-Lock slide switch …

A closeup of the stitched and textured grippy grip …

Back shot and better look at the stitching, texturing, and Logo …

A look at the styled top plate, threaded 510 connection, and textured charge port flap …

The flap was a perfect example of how Geekvape maintained the IP68 rating

A good look at the very snug, and secure battery tray lid/latch …

Closeup of the latch …

A good look at the double sealed bottom lid, plated battery contacts, and latch …

A look at the well thought out spring, and spring rest …

Molicel 18650 P28A battery load out …

While NOT a huge fan of flashy lights, the small side lights were actually unobtrusive, and looked pretty good. They CAN however, be turned off if you wanted. When the A-Lock was engaged, and any buttons were depressed, it lit blue, with a nice light haptic feedback …

Likewise, in the event of a shorted, or open coil (i.e. no tank, or out of range), the light lit red, with the same light haptic feedback …

The 1.08" screen was bright, and easy to read, even in direct sunlight, and the menu system was very easy to use. Mode >> Puffs >> Light >> Screen >> Battery >> About >> Exit …

5 firing mods: Smart >> Normal >> Eco >> Custom >> TC >> Exit. More on these later …

The A-Lock (button/adjustment disable) worked flawlessly, and offered some easy peace of mind when you didn’t want any accidental firing/adjustments …

When vaping (Normal Mode shown) from top to bottom: Battery strength, Mode, Starfield graphic, Wattage, Ohms, Puff counter …

Quick look at the TC screen …

While checking out the Menu options, I was curious about the “Battery” option, which wasn’t detailed in the user’s manual, but apparently limited onboard battery charging. I always remove my batts and charge in my Opus 3100, but a nice feature if you have to charge onboard …

Testing/Usage:

I’ll be honest, having owned numerous previous versions of the Legend, which were somewhat clunky, and dated, I really appreciated the new sleeker styling, and improved feel in the hand. Very comfortable, smooth, and textured/grippy just where it needed to be. Also, as stated above, I’m not a lover of all things flashy, and blingy, and even with the side lights on, it wasn’t over the top, and I ended up leaving them enabled. Screen brightness was great, and the display was sharp and easy to read. The menu was very intuitive, and easy to figure out and use. About the only thing I wasn’t sure about were the “Modes”. 5 total, and as far as I could tell, the first 3 (Smart, Normal, and Eco) were almost identical. Now, all cards on the table, I think they are more for using the Z mesh coils.

Smart Mode:

  • 0.10-0.22 ohms 78 watts (range 78-80 watts)
  • 0.23-0.50 ohms 55 watts (range 55-60 watts)

Normal Mode:

  • 0.10-0.22 ohms 74 watts (range 74-77 watts)
  • o.23-0.50 ohms 52 watts (range 52-54 watts)

Eco Mode:

  • 0.10-0.22 ohms 70 watts (range 70-73 watts)
  • 0.23-0.50 ohms 48 watts (range 48-51 watts)

For my vaping style, I just preferred “Custom” where there were no limits on wattage, and I could play around and find my sweet spot. I briefly tested “TC Mode” using some 316SS coils without issue, but most of my tests were simply done in wattage mode (custom). The AS 4.0 chip did fire very quick, and about the only thing I missed were the sometimes offered “Strong, Normal, or Custom” curves, but after I dialed in my wattage, I just ran with it.

Pros:

  • Show stopping colors and styling
  • Slimmed down from previous versions
  • IP68 rated
  • VERY secure battery lid/latch/switch (double sealed)
  • A-Lock slide switch comes in handy
  • Bright display
  • Clicky/tactile buttons
  • Easy menu system
  • Stitched/textured grip, and slim buttons felt good in the hand
  • Side lights visible without being flashy, or obtrusive (can be disabled if desired)

Cons:

  • Starfield display (on screen) cannot be disabled
  • Haptic feedback (very light) cannot be disabled
  • When changing wattage above or below fixed limits, shifts to next mode (non-issue TC or Custom)
  • Some modes redundant for DIY coils, but assumed best for Z Mesh pre-built coils
  • No adjustable Power Curves

Conclusion:

Even with the few “cons” with this one, it was a “keeper” for me, and I’m already loading up a few more in the cart. Only time will tell how well the finish will hold up. Very good, modern styling, and it felt really good in the hand, missing most, if not all of the “clunky-ness” from previous versions. The “modes” thing was probably just due to the possible use of Z Mesh coils, and the Custom (and TC) modes worked as they should, and I wasn’t left wanting. I did briefly miss any adjustable power curves (i.e. Strong Normal, etc.), but after using it for a while, I just didn’t miss them. Having a slide lock fire/adjustment lockout was very nice, and I used it a lot. I didn’t do a involved TC test, so I couldn’t speak to that, but the limited testing proved consistent “heat” levels. All in, it was a solid, water/dust/impact ready mod that looked great, worked great, and was hard to complain about.

Colors:
