Looking for a new scale

I’ve been making my own e liquid for a few months now and have wondered if I may need a better scale.

I bought a Taylor kitchen scale, put an empty bottle on, rate it out, put in the base juice.

Problem becomes when I’m putting in the flavors, the weight doesn’t move at all when adding 1.2 grams or .9 grams, it just stays at whatever the weight of the base juice is, 27.5 for example.

I don’t know if the scale is not registering the smaller amounts or what but it’s odd.

Does anyone have a better scale they recommend, I have been looking and have seen Tru Weigh scales but haven’t seen anything more from anyone anywhere about it.

Thanks in advance.

@Kev I don’t know what size batches you are mixing, but I’m 100% on board with @warkwarth on the LB-501. The pro’s are it’s got an AC adapter, so it won’t power down in the middle of a session, comes with (2) calibration weights, backlit display, has a 0.01g resolution, and tops out at 500g.

I’ve been sticking with 30ml batches right now till I feel more confident and can buy enough base to make 60 and up.

Thank you, I will check them out as well, just getting a bit frustrating knowing I’m putting in something but the scale isn’t registering it, it only reads out to the 10ths I think but still it should be picking it up.

Well you’d be fine with the LB-501, as I’ve mixed down to 5ml with no issues.

Awesome, thank you.

I use 2 scales the Triton V3 for small quick batches or the LB501 aws…Both are great , if you have room for it the Lb501 is the best bc it comes with a cord and doesnt time out

I use this one most of the time, it’s cheap and accurate for small batches:
Fuzion Milligram Scale… Amazon.com: Fuzion Milligram Scale 50g/0.001g, Portable Jewelry Scale .001 Gram Accuracy, Mg Scale, Powder Scale, Microgram Scale, Milligram Scale for Powder Medicine with Tray/Tweezers/Calibration Weight : Office Products

For lager batches I use the LB501

I’ve had the awb scale for a while, worked great at first. idk if something is wrong with mine because sometimes it won’t register drops. Still works fine for the most part. I just pay close attention when I know it’s not adding up. It also gives me a delay, only giving the true reading after a few seconds. I’m sometimes skeptical of the measurements, but I believe it’s accurate enough. I think I may have spilled too much pg on it. For the price, it’s not too bad. Batteries are still going since I bought it.

This is why I use a 0.001gram scale for mixing, more precise, for larger batches up to 250ml, I use the 0.001 scale for the flavors and nic and then move to the 0.01 scale for the pg/vg

@Mediocre_Remedial did you mean AWS scale ?? I’m unfamiliar with AWB scales.

I only use AWS scales, and run the LB-501, and LB-3000, and I CAL them regularly. Did your scale come with CAL weights, and have you CAL’d it ??

This. When you try 0.001 scale, you never go back.

And the cost is under $5 with shipping included.

Yeah AWS, my bad. I did calibrate it. I think since I spilled pg and VG on it, its just acted funny. some must have gotten inside of it somehow. It randomly shut off on me a couple times when I was using it a couple months ago lol. User error definitely. The fact it still works right 98% of the time despite my abuse is great. I’m pretty sure I still have same batteries still in it since I bought it too. Lasts a very long time.

I wanna add, I also use the AWS for baking. It’s great! Helped me make the best cupcakes ever. By weight measurements when baking makes a big difference.

Whatever you do, don’t buy one of those from a smoke shop. I got ripped off big time. First scale I ever bought, I wanted to mix right away and hadn’t planned ahead. 40$, sucker didn’t last but a few months before it fizzled out.

Didn’t think to ask this, I haven’t bought a new scale yet but with the lb-501, when I get close to my target weight, say 99.7 ounces out of 100, will the scale register the final small drops to get to 100 or does it just jump up because it doesn’t register it?

That’s what my current scale does and makes it difficult, I gotta push on the scale for it to show a difference or lift the bottle off the scale for it to show me the added drops.

@Kev the key with the LB scales is to CAL them frequently, and keep them level or all 4 pads making contact. It’s rare that I’m adding 0.2g ( a single drop) but sometimes I have do, and mine picks it up fine. When empty, sometimes adding another flavor first, and then the ultra small flavor last can help out. Once the scale is loaded or weighted, it should reqister everything.

Mine registers drops. I always start with my nicotine, it’s about 0.93g , it registers the drops of flavor very nicely though. Depending on the flavor, some are heavier than others. Sometimes 1 drop can cause it to go up 0.02g or 0.03g, super sweet is heavier than most flavors so the drops will add up pretty fast.

These scales are cool because they can measure more precisely, it’s 000.00g so I can measure out 0.06g of a flavoring if it’s a small batch. Due to the variation in drops though, sometimes it goes a little over to 0.07g or 0.08g

I think I messed up my scale, sometimes I will randomly not get drops registering, but I assure you it never did that brand new and it’s probably because i spilled pg and VG all over it. It registers drops pretty quickly though. I usually give it a couple seconds to “think” when I’m getting really close to my measurements.

Session drummer is correct about the calibration though, super easy to do and they provide the weights to calibrate it.

That’s encouraging, I’ll be making my first 60 and 120 ml batches in a couple weeks, my best friend is visiting from out of town and he loves making his own stuff it’ll be cool to have him for 2 weeks visiting.

This was supposed to be a reply to you, not another general response.

Yeah, just for an update I just made a 120 ml bottle, I have pre mixed Nic juice so I put in the 112.5 it suggested for my recipe, when I went to add the sweetener it wasn’t updating on its own and I’d have to tap the scale for it to change, it is calibrated, laying flat and even, bottle in the middle of the scale.

I’m gonna pull the trigger on the lb 501, it should be an upgrade to the current Taylor scale I’m using that I bought at the grocery store.
