Looking for a new scale

@Kev yeah, seems like it’s time to replace it.

Just purchased the scale, the Taylor is nice but it only read to .0 in grams.

Just need something that will actually update as I’m filling and not tapping to get it to update.

Thank you, I’ll let you know when it comes and how I like it when I use it.

Well, everyone’s mixing styles are different, but my experience with the LB’s are rock solid. I use the bigger one for big batching, but the 501 is my workhorse. I can’t imagine having to tap a scale while trying to mix/weigh.

The thing about ultra small, ultra high res scales is, for most mixers, it’s a waste, and leaves you unnecessarily chasing the decimal point. I’ve mixed Ultra strong Medicine Flowers in 10ml bottles with no issue. TBH, if you’re mixing, and your seriously sweating trying to get an exact .001 weight, you’re just wasting your time. You’ll never taste the difference even in small 10ml batches. Obviously if you’re scale is just plain OFF, you WILL taste that hehe. Something else to consider when pondering the ultra hi res scales, as they can even have issues with airflow. Heat, air conditioning, ceiling fans, yes, can start to warble the weight readings, so finding the sweet spot gives you enough res to mix, without being temperamental, and actually costing you time.

Batteries are great, but having a scale power down in the middle of a mixing session is not LOL, hence plug-ins are the best. CAL weights included, couldn’t ask for more. My 501 has taken a few tumbles thanks to the kittens, but CAL’d, and right back to mixing. The backlighting on the display also just makes everything easier, and faster.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I’ll have the scale Wednesday and I’m not really chasing the .00 number down the the exact amount of what a recipe calls for but with this Taylor scale I currently have, the recipe may call for .5 ounces for example and with some stuff in it it may be at 28.5 and as I’m slowly adding in by drops it stays on 28.5 but if I remove the bottle the weight will change on the negative end since it was tared to an empty bottle but the weight doesn’t change as I add.

I just made a 120ml bottle last night with it to see if it’ll change as I add but no luck.

I’m not trying to get on the money amounts but to be closer than I know I am currently getting with this one and the LB 501 sounds encouraging, definitely not using the battery, I hate having to keep on tapping this scale to keep it on.

Yes, trashing that scale is the right thing to do @Kev.

Do you typically mix/weight in ounces ?? Have you ever used grams ?

I like your thought process here. Think ill grab one, the MF Silver’s can be tricky to work with and i dont like making dilutions.

I’ve done grams and ounces with this Taylor scale but it just doesn’t pick up the smaller quantities hardly if at all.

Roger that @Kev. It should be night and day different when your new scale arrives.

I actually use the battery with mine. It doesn’t shut off while I’m mixing unless I lose focus and stop paying attention, like looking up something on my phone. Sometimes if I’m taking a little longer to find a flavor or if I’m not ready I just hit the tare button to keep it awake. Sometimes I mix at the dining room table and there’s no outlet that are safe to plug it into, it would create a trip wire if someone wasn’t careful and ran into it. Then that would result juice and mess everywhere. :skull_and_crossbones: I also mix in another spot that doesn’t have easy access to an outlet, so but yeah. Battery isn’t too bad.

Okay, So I actually just did a test. The scale stayed on for 5 minutes and 11 seconds, before it shut off due to inactivity.

Early surprise, it came a day early.

The only downside I can talk about is how it does turn off even plugged in after 3 or 4 minutes.

That being said it was a huge breath of fresh air to watch the scale update the weight as I pour or drop liquid in, thank you and everyone else for this recommendation, truly night and day difference, that Taylor scale will be trashed tomorrow.

So much better in every way.

Now just gotta wait for it to steep.

Made 60 ml of watermelon strawberry bubble gum with sweetener and cooling.

@Kev, you got the LB-501 right ?

If so, when it’s plugged in, it should never turn off. Same thing with the blue back light, once you turn it on, it should never turn off.

You took the battery out right?

Congratulations on your new scale!!! I’ve never used it plugged in anyhow. Backlight and scale stays on for 5min with inactivity. Like session drummer said though, it should not turn off plugged in, so I’m wondering if it’s trying to use the battery if its in there.

Yeah the 501, I plugged it in and had the backlight on and it turned off after about 3 minutes, no batteries in it.

I didn’t put batteries in it.

That’s weird. My scale with batteries stays on for 5min. :eyes:

Strange indeed. The power adapter has a red light if that makes any difference but I don’t think so.

Wait. Hold on a sec. The light on my plug is green.
I wonder if they put a different plug into the product box. I’m about to test it in time and see if it goes off.

Well … Shit. I’m just trying it with the batteries in for a second to see what would happen, and the plug light is still green.

Here’s what my plug looks like.

It’s not turning off when I have it plugged in.

I wonder if they changed the manufacturer.
