Please don’t merge different flavors (with different names). It will become a complete mess and all those recipes totally useless (not to mention angry creators and eventually mixers).
(Merging flavors is way way way more devastating for the database than deleting; which i would avoid anyway as well).
Not sure where you found Creamy Cheesecake but doing a search on the VTA website does not return any creamy version. Only the one.
Plus…whomever entered the creamy version in the database here did not follow the naming convention.
Many brands don’t have all their flavors listed on their websites. All Polish brands are like that for example, not just VTA + another thing, maybe some flavors are not available anymore, not produced anymore (which doesn’t mean they don’t exist or that recipes are garbage and it should be deleted).
Those flavors should remain untouched in the database imo since they have a meaning. Deleting them solves nothing at all, merging these flavors with other different flavors under the same name ultimately destroys the database / flavor reviews / all the recipes / makes people, creators, mixers angry since recipes are irreversibly changed
Any similar names under the same brand are double checked to be sure they are valid, otherwise they are merged into the correct name. Also keep in mind there are a ton of flavors without brand names that are merged to the closest corresponding name. If a recipe is affected by this then it’s safe to assume the recipe author did not follow the naming conventions. Wouldn’t you agree?
Look…I’m doing the best I can with all these names. If something got screwed up, I’m sorry. And if I’m suddenly unpopular now then so be it! But until we 1) either get more help on this as there are only two of us… or 2) Lars re-codes the software, then maybe try to just go with the flow until we get a better handle on it.
When @Ken_O_Where started this thread he included an apparently overlooked paragraph that says…
“What we want is new flavor errors caused by merges or renamings and what it was replaced with.”
“What we don’t want is conversation about them, just to keep things tidy.”
Again, I apologize if some recipes are taking a hit. I get it!
But I’m not going to continue explaining or justifying why something was merged.
Just my personal opinion here: I don’t agree. Similar names are not the same names and too frequently there could be mistakes (human error, can’t by-pass this) and it can happen that two different flavors are merged together which is devastating for those 2 or more flavors, because it
completely destroys both flavors database including their reviews, their ratings, all their recipes, people mix that changed recipe and ofc too often it would be awful and rated low / make creators mad. All this would make more popular mixers angry (changing their recipes, wtf) and losing them would not be the ideal scenario or something that ELR needs.
Imagine merging Strawberry TPA and Strawberry Ripe TPA. It’s similar name (same example as VTA Cheesecake and VTA Creamy Cheesecake above) but different flavors and by merging them everything would collapse; imagine reviews, imagine all the recipes; you’d say but this can’t happen with TPA, but the reality is it can happen, why not? It happened to VTA, it happened to SSA (i just made a notice about that in other thread one hour before i came here; thankfully they were just deleted and with no recipes yet since totally new).
Now imagine all those unknown brands you never heard of and all those that even don’t have a website (you can’t check them all manually TZ; that is way too much work and that’s not needed + discontinued flavors are not shown anywhere anymore, but they still exist) and imagine all those tenthousands of one-shots (what would be the reason to merge them or to delete them if they are correctly spelled/added to the database and even have reviews and even have recipes?).
Merging imho can only be reasonable when it is 100% clear that it is about the same flavor; like Strawbery Ripe TPA and Strawberry Ripe TPA and Ripe Strawberry TPA etc and never ever when there it’s just a guessing game (about unknown flavor/brand). Closest name? Nah, let’s rather fix other 100k’s flavors with misspelled names, wrong abbreviations, symbols/numbers used in their names, etc (by deleting them, not merging) and come back to this issue which is way less relevant since there are not that many flavors that are perfectly spelled + have reviews + have recipes (but for some unknown reason the are wrongly added in the db?? All the community can help you with those not-too-many names). This is just my opinion. Nearly zero chances for misfortunate merge/delete, most work done, most wrong names deleted from db - and that would be flavors that are most annoying and most confusing to users.
I know that. I gave Polish brands (all of them) as an example there since they are known for this particular thing.
Just trying to be useful; i appreciate the enormous amount of work you put in this (not just lately, but overall; thank you for all).
149967 flavors, over 40k bad names removed/merged and a small handful of mistakes, i dont see a problem here. TZ and I have both made a few mistakes and there will be more, it is inevitable. This is a massive undertaking and we are using stone age tools as that is all that we have.
There mere fact that 40k+ bad names have been removed is incredible, IMO. You cant possibly know how difficult it is until you are one of the people trying to fix the DB, even TZ was blown away by how bad and difficult it is.
This thread was supposed to be about those errors so that we could send them to Lars to be fixed. So far it seems there are two flavors that have been reported and 35 posts.
We understand it is frustrating and we wish there was another way to do this but there isnt. We are doing our best with the tools we have.
I leave on Sunday to watch the new house be delivered on Monday and will be back some time next week. We are gong to pause until then to see if there are any more reports and if not we will continue forward. We will march on either way, this will just allow us to see where we are and hopefully get some things fixed.
@Mikser I KNOW you’re right. I wonder if the following would be too much work for you, or not.
I know on “another” website, I provide URL’s TO the flavors for verification before they are added to the DB. Would that be possible here without too much work on your part ?
If so, I KNOW it would help TZ and Ken (and others) keep it all straight.
Not at all, I’d say you and Ken are the most popular atm for all you are doing on the data base, it’s a huge task understandably. But Rome wasn’t built in a day, what’s the rush now
If flavors are merged and recipes destroyed is there a fix for that…
Maybe put an “Information Note” at the top when flavors are merged,
EG: Medicine Flower OG was merged with (Premium) which is the closest replacement for the now unavailable flavor. I see a note can be added at the top as was done on the BCF Mystery Flavor,
Okay, @Rocky02852 that is a fanfreakintastic idea.
I had thought about merging the old MF line with the Premium, there are so few of us that were using the old line that i dont think people would even notice. But i didnt, i figured something like that could wait until later on down the road.
There are backups but i have no ability to access them nor any logs. As far as we know there have been very few errors, i know i have made several that were able to be fixed. The majority of errors have been from lines/flavors that have very little usage.
This problem didnt happen over night and it wont be fixed over night either so i have no problem with seeing the results so far with a little time off.
Today i saw a recipe that listed Super Sweet with no manufacturer and it had 2 pages of recipes. What pisses me off that it was just fixed last month so no matter what this is just going to happen all over again. The same recipe had “colada” listed and the same person had it in another recipe but used the right flavor. Maddening…
Yeah it’s not a bad idea if an “Info Note” can be at the top of the page…
But it can’t be blatantly done, some research needs to be done before merging. Take MF Lemon for example, the nearest replacement is the (Silver) line, but you know what I mean…
