What Are You Listening To? (Part VI) 2022/23

A little Joe Walsh trivia tidbit. He’s a ham radio operator.

I’m not happy about that. Easy is one of the best.

Guess who my friend and I were talking about this morning?

Not really The Guess Who, but the 2 most responsible for their success…Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman. I love the stories of how the songs came about.

My very first live concert ever was Cummings at the Canadian Exhibition 1979. He was fantastic :canada:

I saw Crosby Stills Nash & Young, The Band, & Jesse Colin Young (Youngbloods) at Varsity Stadium, Toronto 9-2-74. 48 yrs ago, tomorrow. JFC am I old. I think that was the year before the official Canadian National Exhibition concerts started in 1975.

I was sitting approx where the red arrow is.

I’m trying to cull from the shelves to make room for the new new but i like everything on them for one reason or another. I’ve played Red few times and far between. I forgot how dense but precise it all is. Headphones to isolate the quiet bits louder than the blasted tinnitus without getting a not so gentle rap rap rapping at the door. It’s almost creepy how much John Wetton’s voice sounds like Greg Lake’s (King Crimson’s previous singer).

It’s a keeper. Not only that but every time I do this I get re-interested and fill holes in the collection. I don’t have Islands, Larks’ Tongues in Aspic or Starless and Bible Black for instance. I never researched rabbit holes but I know that every one I’ve gone down has side tunnels.

lol I forgot about this raunchy piece of work till I read the Allmusic review

I said it was a bad idea

Meanwhile
Ritchie Blackmore sacrifices 3 Strats to the metal gods at Cal Jam '74
The trip starts peaking at about 8:30
Blackmore spotlight at 12:30
Guitar duel at 14:40
Psychosis at 17:40

I prefer the version on Made In Japan but I saw this live on TV the day of the show.
I was a Die-Hard Deep Purple fan already but had never seen anything like this before.

How many versions of Deep Purple MKII in concert do I “need”? All of them apparently.
and there’s Lucille tying the whole room together.
That song was Greg Lake’s first R&R inspiration that I mentioned in a previous King Crimson post.
Now playing In Concert '72 Paris Theater London 3/9/72 - another keeper

It’s time for some relaxing 2019 style S&M. Picture from last year.

Sarah-N-Tuned reviewed the Raptor Bronco and had Possum Kingdom shown on the stereo display. What a hoot. Sure is loud in here right now.

@Mowgli King Crimson was a groundbreaking group and doesn’t get the attention they deserve. And who’d have thought that Greg Lake and "The Nice"s Keith Emerson would get together with Carl Palmer to form another incredible group. Gotta say, I loved ELP and played a lot of their music on the radio as a DJ. Also played Crimson King. Sometimes I played tracks from both groups back to back…just for fun. Thanks, again, for the memories.

Best of The Guess Who was one of my 8 cassettes for a penny from RCA Record & Tape Club.
Also Nilsson Schmilsson, a few Three Dog Night tapes & Led Zeppelin 3 & 4
This song freaked me out a little but it rocked like proto-BTO
Get your headphones on :headphones:

Then this happened and I’ve had Not Fragile in one form or another since '73 or '74
https://youtu.be/JZzzYld_Ulw

Comin’ to you across country
Hoping boogies still allowed
You ask do we play heavy music
Well are thunderheads just another cloud, we do
Not Fragile, straight at you
Then we vanish to the night
Still in your ears but out of sight
Not Fragile
Don’t think we feel hurt or wounded
Or our egos are showing thru
It’s our world that’s been disrupted
And our strength reflects from you
Well its true
Not Fragile, over you
Try us when you’re getting down
Feelin’ high or just hangin’ round
Not Fragile
The times we travel in our lives
Are hard and fast and give us drive
We may seem distant most of the time
But many thoughts are still on our minds
Not Fragile

The scene previous to the helicopter included Mannish Boy but I don’t know which version.
I’ll always choose Live w/Mick & Co. at Buddy Guy’s old club. That was a party.

Bonus! 55 minute live video w/Johnny Winter
