What are you watching? 2022/23

(just something I have to occasionally revisit)

I’m generally not a jazz fan: Although an intriguing drum solo outside prog-rock can interest me.

I must admit that one exchange from Yes, Minister came to mind a minute in - ‘When does this end?’ ‘As soon as you like’.

Tonight I shall be watching: Star Slammer.

I cannot believe that I haven’t seen this one yet inspite of it being a multiple-titled, exploitation, S&M Sci-Fi movie. And, I’ve known about it for over a decade - Time to correct that.

Well, I got into a completely normal chat about the adage of ‘no underwear in space’ in sci-fi and we pondered which movie was the first.

I always assumed that 1960/1961s Nude on the Moon was the first English language topless Sci-fi but, the first braless will take some research.

I have been to asked to watch it before the year ends, so the start of over a week of being pleasantly mollifed is probably the best time:

Well, when you deal with socialists for too long, then noone is able to finish a sentence without redefining things. Like how silly the LGBT turning to LGBTQIA+ is - So, we have a group who is straight and the other is everyone else. Well, no potential to cause problems with that definition.

Tonight I’ll be seeing if a new movie will be joining my seasonal watch list:

Obviously I will still be watching Jack Frost 2 tonight:

If you are unfamiliar with this masterpiece, then GoodBadFlicks has a glorious breakdown:

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Cunk I watched during second dinner.

After watching Violent Night last night, I can say that it is definitely worth a watch. It does have an oddly mixed style and tone where it leaps from family drama akin to Ready or Not, Christmassy schmaltz, and aspects of Die Hard one and two (It does directly reference them a few times).

The last 40 minutes is when it really drifts away from family friendly - Santa does love his hammer and bones don’t like hammers. I am assuming that there are many different international cuts as some scenes only have cgi blood, while a few key moments are focused on the practical. But it still tries to add a Christmassy air to all.

There is only one character who is just an annoyance and the film is not trying to force any particular perspective on anyone (an automatic positive for me).

So, overall, I will revisit it next year but I’m not sure as yet if it will become a seasonal tradition.

Am almost done with “Three Pines” and have enjoyed it a bunch. Alfred Molina’s character is awesome and there are a number of quirky characters. The scenery is gorgeous.

I’ll have to give it a watch.

I must admit that the title made me ponder if this was about Doc. Brown’s experiments before Marty was directly involved.

After 5 appalling Star Trek series in a row, I was pointed in the direction of The Orville and it is enjoyable to have some decent sci-fi this decade. The first season definitely has a strong Farscape and Galaxy Quest feel to it and fit in well with a whimsical TNG episode air.

I am sure that I do not want to encounter another STD after this.

I’ve just watched The Power of the Doctor (I wanted to start my seasonal break with fun things) and it was shit.

The only redeeming factors were the ending and allowing the old companions to embrace their characterisation with their ‘Doctor’. Ace being free to blow shit up was great fun.

Sadly, the rest of it was a logical void, a paradox defying shambles (when paradoxical points are used, they need to follow internal rules) and a continuity dumpster fire.

When plot points lack coherence within the episode, well that is bad. Forgetting key points from when the showrunner was writing episodes is just baffling - especially when they heavily relied on nostalgia to carry all forward.

So a rare scathing review from me.

After I signed up for Hulu they had an add-on on offer for Disney+ and ESPN+. It wasn’t much more so I took advantage of it. I haven’t utilized Disney much until recently. It’s THE place for Star Wars fans. Holy cow there’s a bunch of stuff I haven’t seen. I finished Andor (Which was pretty awesome), and now I’m watching the Obi-Wan series.

Edit to add: those AK-47 rifles (or whatever they’re called now) in Andor were distracting (shown in the trailer as well). I haven’t followed the weaponry that closely but that was weird. Not sure why they didn’t design a different blaster/rifle. I’m sure there’s an explanation but I haven’t looked into it.

Good series :+1:

This is another by the same creators:

The Librarians - streaming tv show online (justwatch.com)

This is the newest series, the first episode we found funny but the rest not so much. Not as funny as the others, less politically incorrect and a bit soppy/woke even?
