@Bearkat At first, are you wrapping on a drll bit [screwdriver] or using a coil jig?

I would suggest you begin with Kanthal A1 because it is more forgiving while you get used to wrapping,
especially if you spread the wraps for non-contact coils. Start with a spool each of 26ga and 28ga.

Some wire is really dirty, but most any wire can be dirtyā€¦so ALWAYS dry-burn your coils before wicking
to clean them, but also to check if they need tweaking to get even firing.
You can clean the wire to the extreme like some do, but at least pull it through a paper towel or micro-fiber cloth
after you cut your strand length(s).

Ebay sellers have some fair priced pkgs of cotton and wire together, usually 10 cotton pads and a 100ft roll of wire,
or other variations. Iā€™m sure you know how to cut the cotton squares [ two directions are wrong, two directions are right]

ok bro you need some help. first you want to go to the source to buy your wire www.temcoindustrial.com these are the people that manufacture the stuff (in the U.S) just off the top of my head i paid $3.70 for a hundred feet of kanthal A-1 Annealed round resistance wire 24 ga I would start with 24,26,28 ga. if you plan on doing claptons 32,36 ga. they also have titanium wich i do not recomend and nichrome 60 and 80 which i do recomend.
Next, I would go to Kings Royal Vapor on you tube and watch his video and print his work. He has done all the work for us.He has printable sheets with all the legths of all the guages of all the ohms you want to build, very handy.
I would personally get a coil jig from coil-master or UD they come in very handyhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/101083021537922880182/albums/6260638419381750097/6260638417322733154 that link is a video i made on how to make very easy fused claptons. it is a bit dorky but easy to understand here is the one i made on the video.
Next is wicking which it looks like you got a lot of advice on already.
Now i will give you some you tube and instagram names of some awesome coil builders. First Squidoode at the art of vaping he has some very good tutorials. Also, Twisted Messes has some very good tutorials. Check out coilporn on instagram for some cool builds that maybe someday we can achieve.

@Bearkat One more thing while you set up shopā€¦
If you donā€™t already have one, this is a super handy tool with many uses.
It was $5 at DV but I havenā€™t see one lately, sometimes itā€™s scarce anywhere.
Just searchā€¦
Here it is at fasstech :

If youā€™re still in a mode of gathering info before accumulating you can always buy some coils premade in different configs. This site has some nice choices in different styles of SS - clapton, hives, tidal, etc. Even if you donā€™t order from them. The charts on the different pages are really useful for seeing what particular wire gauge and wraps will give you for resistance on the coils. They have a you pick 10 sampler for $8 if you wanted to try a few styles in different sizes while you learn to wrap your own. Remember, if youā€™re planning dual coil setups to divide the resistance by two.

Thanks. I do plan on getting a coil jig set and a 521 tab to do my builds on.

Iā€™ve got it bookmarked and have been playing around with steam engine trying to figure it out and get a feel for it.

I use the cotton hook [pick] every time I wick a coil, and it works well to push or move your wick around, and great to separate cotton evenly. Also straightening coils with the blunt end.
I personally think the Coil-Master V3 coil jig is the best, and it will wrap in either direction.
I rebuilt a dozen Kanger mini RBA plus yesterday afternoon. They are pretty tiny to work with. I canā€™t imagine building them without the CM 521 TAB anymore.

Coil-Master V3 coil jig And the Coil Master 521 TAB are on my list. Looks like Iā€™ll pick up a cotton hook too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Honestly, there is no need to thank me, Iā€™m just attempting to help.
There are so many products available, and all of us have used quite a few of them. Some can be expensive and still not achieve what you want, so by sharing results it may in turn help others not only get to where they want to be, but also save some $$$ in the processā€¦to spend on something else ! :sunglasses:

first off I just want to say, you guys freakinā€™ \m/ROCK\m/. I cannot remember a web site forum where people shared so much so willingly and there was such a ā€¦ GOOD VIBE ā€¦ all the while. While this isnā€™t rocket science, it is technical and a little scary for people like me, and you guys are really making me comfortable with taking things to the next levelā€¦

In the very short time I have been a member here, I have gone from buying my liquids premade and using a cigar style Eleaf iJust 2, to buying/using an Eleaf iStick 100w box and several tanks of all shapes and sizes and options as well as making my own juices that are almost to the point of being vapable

I am now on the precipice of buying my very first aromamizer from STEAMCRAVE and I am going to take the plunge on creating my own coils and so on.

That makes this thread and all your awesome input invaluable.

I do ask for input: I am trying to put together and shopping list for my foray into the world of building my own coils.

As best I can tell, I need wire (type and guage tbd), cotton (type tbd) and then tools. I was thinking an ohm meter where you can plug the 510 post into it once you have your deck built (I saw the one Mr. Ellis was using on his STEAMCRAVE review) and that looked simple enough. Also seems like I need some nice wire snips, scissors. Is there a recommended tool for wrapping the coils themselves? Or even better a DIY KIT that has all the tools I may need. I know they exist but there are 10000 of em and I donā€™t really know which is right for a first timer that is going to grow and learn with commitment. I didnā€™t see how he did it, but saw him manipulating the finished coils with a screwdriver. I see little black boxes with posts sticking up and they look to be of varying diameters, so I was thinking that would be how you actually get your gauge correct on wrapping. Do things like these come in tool kits? Pardon my ignorance and lack of proper jargonā€¦

I am going to research my ass off for the next two weeks and then buy what I need to. If I am forgetting anything obvious and important, please let me know. I am thinking I will have about $100-$150 to spend on the tool kit, wire and cotton and any devices needed for monitoring the electrical side of things. Think thereā€™s enough $$$ in the budget for what I need? Mind you, I donā€™t mind buying better stuff allowing for room to grow and waiting for a couple purchases, rather than rushing and not getting food quality materials.

Thanks again folksā€¦you are all so damned helpful. It is appreciated immensely.

If anyone wishes to PM me please donā€™t hesitate, or even have a chat via phone or whatever. I will provide all the necessary contact info if you let me know.

PS: sorry for the wall of textā€¦when I get excited I get chatty :smiling_imp:

Coil Master 521 Tab

Be the first to review this product

Since its introduction at ECC 2015 in Pomona, the Coil Master 521 Tab has gained loads of popularity, and thatā€™s because it ultimately reinvented the ohm meter. This high tech multi-functional device not only acts as an ohm meter, but it also allows you to check voltage drop, test fire coils, and it also acts as a rebuild deck. The process of rebuilding your atomizers has become even easier, and itā€™s all made possible by the Coil Master 521 Tab. Enjoy the equipped 510 spring-loaded connection, a voltage checker, terminal connectors, 2-way rocker switch, OLED screen, and more!

this is an example of what I am thinking about buyingā€¦it seems to cover a lot of basesā€¦

I donā€™t have one but itā€™s on my next to get list. It does make me chuckle how it says that it basically reinvented the ohm meter, since really itā€™s just a clone itself. Looks to be a great clone and much more cost effective, but hereā€™s the original.

thanks Big B! $220 bucks tho! jeepersā€¦the one I showed was $50 bucks from Direct Vaporā€¦now Iā€™m trying to figure out what the hell the differences are to warrant such a price desparityā€¦and this is where my ignorance is getting in my way. I definitely need to do a bit of readingā€¦I am in over my head and I havenā€™t even determined what it is I donā€™t knowā€¦lol.

The $220 covered the cost of R&D that the inventor paid for and the clone manufacturer doesnā€™t have to spend.

Also, I think you can find it cheaper for the CM one. Iā€™ll look for a link.

Here you go $30.95 and several other sites have it for around $35.
