Coronavirus

A family member chatted their curiosity about taking their cash out of the bank. Yeah who up top was talking about boiling their cash? Yeaaah paper money and coins not too sanitary when you think about it. So you take out all that paper money and the bank offices close. Suddenly, everybody wants their $$ via CC, PayPal or Venmo etc and all you have is paper money (but sir? I boiled it!) and a hard path to get it back into an actual bank? This could be the end of ca$h transactions, ya think? Maybe start printing it on toilet paper… I’m not happy inserting my CC chip into that nasty POS slot …who’s gonna test those damn credit card machines!?

I am in a similar situation with a 70+ yo mother (with health issues) living home and it would tear me apart if something would happen to her. However, not keeping the kids at home is only going to increase spreading this disease and make a bad situation worse. At home those kids can infect a few people and then it stays contained. Leave them out in the open and the virus keeps spreading and more and more families like ours will eventually be affected.

If you’re not sure about kids, the safe way to deal with it is to self quarantine (even inside your house) and respect all medical recommendations (keep distance, disinfect everything, wash hands, wear masks, general hygienic rules) and do this for at least 2 weeks. It’s very tough but worth doing to save a life.

Here you see A LOT of people using contactless payments in shops. Too bad it’s only possible for small amounts (up to about 25 €). The smarter people who touch the machines are wearing gloves and most will use hand sanitizer right after.
We also have apps on phones that people use to pay so that nobody has to touch anything that doesn’t belong to themselves. +1 for digital currency. If there’s one things this crisis should teach us is that we have to get rid of all the microbe spreading paper money. I actually can’t really remember the last time I paid with actual paper or coins.

They are shutting schools as of Tuesday here in Victoria and positive cases jumped by 67 in the last 24hrs (it has now doubled in the last 3 days) there are now total 296 cases not sure if the increase in numbers is due to an increase in testing numbers or not.

At this rate it will be only 42 days until the whole population of Victoria is positive (if the lock downs etc had no effect) hopefully the rate is slowed considerably with the measures the governments are taking.

Please stay safe everyone, I would hate to lose any of you.

I did so yesterday. I don’t want to be flippant or anything but I don’t see how paying cash is more risky than using cards or phones, since all the items that you buy are being hand scanned by the people working the checkout.

Those items have gone through numerous hands and I just read something yesterday about the virus living very long on plastic, you know, like cards.
I wear gloves, as do the people at the checkout.

Oh here it is;

I don’t have a contactless pas, I exchanged it for a normal one.
I lost my pass last year, no contactless payments possible, no money lost.

I don’t use my phone for payments, it’s an item that is frequently lost and when for some reason it stops working I’m screwed.
I don’t want to be utterly depended on my phone.
I like paying cash because I’m sick and tired of all the tracking and spying and it gives me a better idea of how much money I spend.

There are also a number of people who are not allowed to use pin or phone because they cannot handle money, their money is handled by others and they get cash money every week for their basic needs.

The elderly can get really confused too with all that new technology and don’t always know how to handle it so a lot of them pay cash.

TLDR; I want cash to stay.
Don’t get me started on what banks are going to do when all physical money is no longer around.
It would need a separate bashing topic of its own :sunglasses:

Our schools are closed since the 16th of March. I just had an email from the school to tell me they’ve decided to continue to pay the people that are usually doing lunchbreak at least until April 6.
After that the whole situation will be reevaluated again.
That is some good news, that bit of extra money is what gets me through the month.

Australian PM has announced further National closures of pubs, clubs, restaurants, religious gatherings and cafes due to people over the weekend not Social Distancing, particularly younger people.
Each state will still make their own decisions as to other areas that may be closed.

I don’t think banning cash is helpful for all the reasons you point out.
Just wash yours hands before & after :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m afraid the only thing that is really going to help is stay home, don’t eat and don’t breath.

It’s still a viable option here.

Yeah, I’m old (school) :older_woman:

I have only been out about 10 times in the past 7 weeks.
Just to work once or twice a week including stopping at the shop, to the shops once for a proper shop.
Hubby has had foot surgery and has not been allowed to walk for that time & cannot drive.
We have to go for an x-ray Tues & the shops while I am there. Thursday he finds out (phone consult) if he can start weight bearing on the foot.
So we have almost been self-isolating already.

I was just talking to a friend working in an immigration center. They come in contact with a lot of new people and it’s difficult to contain a virus in places like that.
His colleague is home with a dry cough and fever and my friend has been working closely with him last week so he’s in self quarantine right now.
So I asked, do you have enough food, want me to do some groceries for you and he said he’s not showing any symptoms (yet), still going to shop himself, just keeping basic hygienic rules in mind, keeping distance etc.
And here I was under a false impressions that (suspected) sick people would somehow be restricted even more. Be careful out there, stay safe, keep your distance from others, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, disinfect the stuff you touch, only touch the stuff you buy in a shop and everything else. You know the drill by now.

What struck me is that she says people can carry the virus and have no symptoms for 24 days. So much for the 2 week recommendation. My friend will be out to work again after 14 days of quarantine even though he doesn’t want to.

I’ve been following a lot of news lately, everything so far seems to be temporary measures to cope with the crisis. Or did I miss something?

I seem to remember something about this.
I’m not sure if it was in relation to Aus or other countries but I recall someone “pushing” for it or against it.

It is not something that I would support - you can’t have a garage/yard sale with no cash

That’s what they said after 9/11. Governments worldwide used that as an excuse to curb peoples freedom, privacy and a lot more.
19 years down the road the situation hasn’t gone back to the way it was, measures have become even more severe.
There’s no such thing as temporary with those vultures, banks and governments have made no secret of wanting to get rid of cash.
For our own protection of course.

I thought the same but my sister said she rang the Covid hotline here (Aus) on Fri as she had not been well.
This is what she said:
“Having a higher temp is a symptom but you need to have cold or flu like symptoms with a temp. I may be put in line for a test but I would have to wait a week or so for a spot”

I didn’t ask what her symptoms were, have just msg’d her about self isolating.
Edit: she was just told she didn’t have the right symptoms, (was gastric related), not isolating but Social Distancing, cleaning with Isop. Alc.

It seems that they are being quite strict with the testing, only if symptoms a, b, c & d - probably counting risk factor too?

:astonished:

Same here, they also had an added requirement, you had to have been in a country like Italy for instance, or been in contact with an infected person.
That’s almost impossible to know with barely no testing done and not everyone showing symptoms.
It looks like they have no idea at all what to do about it (shocker) and everything that’s being done is just to make people feel that something is done.

They’ve put plexiglass protections in front of the checkouts now, to me that’s just another pointless measure since the air just freely flows around, under and over it.

Maybe putting this on the door will help?

Kansas City MO and surrounding counties are going into a 30 day lockdown this coming Tuesday. Critical travel, groceries etc. only. Government is sending out letters to those who have essential jobs. More questions than answers on the streets at this moment.

Initially gastric symptoms were a small percentage of cases and more common in children, as they learn more about the virus they are saying that up to 50% of people show gastric symptoms initially then the lung symptoms after

We have some supermarkets in Denmark which started up to have disposable gloves at the entrance to the supermarket, for projects u and other customers vs the virus.
Same places u can scan the different groceries u buy with ur phone and a special app and right before u goes outside u have to make a last scan on a poster on the cash register, which tells ur finished shopping. Sometimes they can check u out if u pay for it all, but mostly u just leave the shop after… Very smart :+1:t2:
