ELR is a testing ground? A rant of sorts

Im hungry and I have a lunch date soon with an old friend… :stuck_out_tongue:
I guess I better go get ready and out the door… happy you are laughing with me

Before I read the rest of ‘what you think’ let me help you understand why you see the 1-star ratings. First, the ratings system in general is…well, over rated. And that’s another topic. But besides allowing users to bestow 5 stars on their own recipes, I sometimes use the system a bit differently.

Recipes containing incorrect flavor names (as outlined in the ELR naming conventions) receive a comment that includes the correct name, a link to the flavor properties page and another link to the Flavor Stash guide. After repeated comments if the correction(s) still haven’t been made it’s usually because the user is ignoring the request for whatever reason.

So it’s no surprise, when the recipe receives a 1-star, that the user is suddenly more focused and paying attention to the comments! The one thing I’ll agree with you on is… yes, they’re totally annoyed. And that is the whole point sir!

This continuation of the original tread reminded me with a smile, why I moved all my recipes to private. No loss to anyone, No ego trips for star rating, No bashing because of mistakes. ELR is a great place with some excellent people. But it does have it’s special ones who know all, as all sites do.

I haven’t got one single public recipe and never will. I don’t need either adoration or condemnation. I mix for me.

I’d have to say mine is a mix… some are public now, some might not be later.
Some will stay private and some will never be on the site at all.

I do it to share recipes, not to be patted on the back…
I like to share the ones I think are a good mix, but I never post recipes I have not tried.

I think the main issue with it “reopening” is the griping.
We all share in our own ways, public or private recipes… who really cares at the end of the day.
Don’t like what you mixed? Take your notes, toss the bad mix out and start over.
Learning is something that teaches you a lesson, if you think you can not learn something, then you need to break things down to understand and if you think you know it all, you might be at the end of life…

Life goes on.

So would it be correct to assume you moved your recipes to Private because they were getting flagged for naming conventions? I only ask because that’s one way for users to fly under the radar and not have to adhere to any of those conventions. Kind of like the “what they don’t know” train of thought? Or in this case what they can’t see.

Once a mistake is realized for what it is, it’s seldom repeated. Unless it was purposeful, in which case it’s no longer a mistake. Please define “bashed” and please provide an example of someone getting “bashed” because of a mistake.

Nope never flagged, and what were rated were rated all well and fairly. I keep them private for the reasons I listed.

Sorry but the verbiage and tone I have seen on some of the “corrections” might cause one of those sensitive types to rebel. It happens here here often on the forums. We are a culturally diverse group mistakes are made.

Also reminds me why I left the forum for awhile, but now I try to keep my participation to a minimum. This thread just made me give in to my ELR addiction, lol

I tried that. Worked quite well…for about 2 days! :sunglasses:

Personally dont know why you are getting bashed for his post and the vast majority of what you write I totally agree with.

It is mainly a testing ground. Why are all the top rated recipies old? Personally think its because not so many people mix others recipies now. Lets face it, very few of the top recipies on here actually are nowadays. I look at recipies to gain ideas and knowledge for recipes I wish to mix myself. I have a pretty big flavour stash, yet there is hardly a recipie I have all the flavours to mix if I wanted to. SO I read recipies to see what people are using as often something in there I havent even considered.

I cant comment on the programming but I can say with countries different spellings of words such as “Sherbert” in the UK, it is very easy often to type in a concentrate in your spoken language or using abbreviations for a manufacturer and the correct one doesnt even come up as an option, so there will be lots of errors.

I have done these myself, commented on the fact and told I should know better as been on here for years. Also if the comment isnt responded to within 24hrs there is usually a 1star rating, we dont all come on here everyday. And reading comments here “it is designed to piss you off” and subsequent people just putting there recipies in private. So isnt that clever, how does that benefit the community, pissing people off and getting mixers to not even show there recipies, isnt that actually counter productive?

And the reason you get abuse which I have been guilty of is your manner if someone doesnt correct this to your liking. And people not complying as it gets annoying after a while as it did to me, you then spam and argue with them until you have annoyed them to abuse you…and then delete all your evidence, so yes whatever you are like in real life, your actions on here are not friendly, are you actually surprised you are getting abuse regardless of whether you are doing something with good intentions.

So yes, I agree very much with these persons comments and a lot of the replies bashing him and some of this “only good recipies should be posted” type comments are just showing why people could actually be driven away from using the site.

Thanks for that, Will.

I shouldn’t bother since there seems to be a clique of self-congratulating regulars here that will strike down this post without any doubt, but anyway I’ll speak my mind one last time:

  • If I would tell someone to shut up and support the site, and that person kindly informed me that he does so, and I don’t, I wouldn’t pat others on the back for calling him a “Sammy McSarcasm”, I’d humbly apologize and make a fucking donation ASAP - If anything’s “not cool at all” it’s making false accusations and being a hypocrite and doubling down on it when you’re being called out.

  • Tortured Zen is not a staff member indeed (and not to my surprise): he’s a vigilante style self appointed law enforcer with no mandate complaining about how his efforts don’t work very well. I have no sympathy for that at all. No doubt he means well but if you’re trying to help an (online or any other) community, you’re going to have to educate yourself about how to do that. Bullying users into submission never worked. Mopping a floor with the faucet dripping never worked. Pointing to someone else never worked. Instead of telling me to talk to the developer, the real question is why he didn’t do so himself.

Of all the priorities a community manager has, safeguarding the user base against getting annoyed to the point of being driven away from the site is probably the first after making sure the system works. And by god, any members proudly stating that pissing people of is the goal of their actions should have their accounts terminated first thing in the morning.

“Once a mistake is realized for what it is, it’s seldom repeated.”

I have yet to see a better way to declare being out of touch with reality.

That was directly due to your attempt to shame Chris-

If you recall, the rest of my post was largely supportive of your position.

I’m not a fan of cliques and we don’t like to propagate that type of behavior, but it does happen everywhere; it’s the nature of the beast.

I encourage you to speak your mind. You’re as entitled to do so here as much as anyone else. I think you’ll find that most of us are very reasonable and easy going. I hope you decide to stick around and contribute.

I’m not surprised you see it that way, my slightly narrow-minded friend.
After you have worked at familiarizing users with ELR’s naming conventions for a while, you will begin to recognize the difference between a mistake and intentional defiance. And not surprisingly, defiance accompanied with ignorance.
