For tonight’s serving of March Madness, I will be rewatching Baskin.
Again, it is an utterly demented dark descent into debauchery - It really shows how sinister a Turkish ice cream franchisee can be.
Many will be put off by the need for subtitles but it is worth the effort to see another country’s cultural and religious traditions when addressing the themes of descent, judgement, and damnation.
I actually enjoyed this one and that was while going in with all baggage I have with M. Night’s religious and apocalypse themed movies.
It’s certainly a step up from Old (which was just ‘wrong’ on so many levels), though the ending is a bit of a let-down on the level of Glass. Luckily there was no devil spotting toast scene, though having Hotdog Guy would have brightened it up a bit.
So, worth a watch but don’t go in with preconceived ideas and expectations of Mr. Twist.
I have to disagree with @Mark_Turner on Dave Bautista: He certainly did a much better job than Arnold and he showed that he does have some serious acting chops. Though I am a teacher who is 6’ 2", heavily tattooed, and built like a lethargic walrus.
Brendan Fraser was excellent in this role.
Although I really enjoyed the Whale.
I was so mad & emotionally invested.
You have characters that are cruel & appear not very compassionate. And the Main Character (Brendan Fraser) who is unwilling to save himself or put up a fight. Because his grief has incapacitated him.
Great Character development, difficult to watch for me at some points.
The Film stuck with me for about 2 days.
Which is exactly what you look for in a good Movie. One that leaves a lasting impression.
Last Night’s rewatch was Man on the Moon: a fun biopic of the unkillable surrealist and shock comedian Andy Kaufman.
After learning of the death of Gary Rossington, it reminded me of how Free Bird shot back into the public consciousness from the mid 90s to 2010s all by being used in memorable movie scenes. So for tonight’s bout of March Madness, I’ll rewatch the film which has my personal favourite use of the song - Kingsman: The Secret Service.
This is an entertaining twist on the classic 007 format and based on a minor 2012 comic. Although, I must admit that not including Eggsy rescuing Pierce Brosnan and Patrick Stewart in the movie adaptation missed a treat. But, I think that can be forgiven with a co-star role for Elton John in the second one.
Rebellious Becky tries to reconnect with her father during a getaway to a lakefront house. The trip becomes brutal when convicts on the run. Led by Dominick (Kevin James) invade the home.
I never pictured Kevin James in a Villian role.
He knocks it out of park !
Oh this is a good home invasion movie which casts against type for one of the leads: The rest are standard archetypes where you can put a number on their head based on when they’ll die.
Kevin James was good, though personally, the more he spoke the harder it was to believe him as a hardened Neo-Nazi.
So, a fun take on the genre (certainly better than The Purge, Strangers Prey at Night, and Us), though it didn’t lean into the video nasty style enough for me.
I watched that a while ago and enjoyed it too. It was one of those where I was scrolling through Netflix looking for anything that could possibly be watchable and stumbled across it.
A big departure from Paul Blart.
Another winner by the man who brought us Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan.
Stallone’s acting IMHO is great! He’s gotten better with age.
Follows New York Mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi, just after he is released from prison after 25 years and unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Realizing that his mob family might not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet.
Last night, I decided to watch Evil Toons as part of my March of Madness. I was originally considering watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit? But, I thought it I should go for its sleazier younger sibling instead.
If you have never watched it, it is a sexploitation movie about Dick Miller driving a group of four adult actresses to a house so they can clean it over the weekend. Late on the first night, David Carradine knocks on their door and hands them an Evil Dead inspired book which leads to death, some animation and a hell of a lot of nudity on a scale which Trash from Return of the Living Dead would have approved of.
Also, this cinematic titan is one of a group of horror movies which were meta well before Scream brought it to a more general audience. Dick Miller, watching a movie with Dick Miller in it and then wondering why that guy never got an Oscar being a classic one.
This was pretty good and ill definitely tune in for S2 when it comes out. Not really my kind of show, i mostly do SciFi/fantasy and documentaries but the wife was watching it so i sat down for a minute to check it out with her and the next thing i knew i had watch the whole season. Good stuff.
