Eclipse Dual Coil RTA – Sour Taste & Flavour Issues

Hey everyone,

So, I finally got my hands on the Eclipse Dual Coil RTA by Yacht Vape. Having been a big fan of the single-coil Eclipse (seriously, best flavour I’ve ever had from any RTA), I was beyond excited to give the dual coil a try. I expected it to be just as good, if not better.

But here’s the thing…

When I first unboxed it, I noticed something odd: condensation in the tank. Small water droplets on the inside, which was weird for something brand new. No big deal, though—I figured a good clean would sort it out. I stripped it completely, scrubbed it down, and even ran it through my ultra-sonic cleaner. I do this with all my new atties and coils, so it’s just part of the ritual.

I built my first coil setup, wicked it up, and… shocker: the flavour was way off. Not only was it nowhere near the amazing performance of my single-coil Eclipse tanks, but there was this strange sour taste that I can’t explain.

Thinking I must have missed something, I tore it down again for another deep clean, replaced the O-rings, and rebuilt it. Same sour taste, same lackluster flavour.

Here’s the kicker: every review I’ve seen raves about this tank being a flavour beast. I feel like I must be doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what it is.

Anyone else had this issue? Is there something specific about this RTA I’m missing, or could I have a dud on my hands? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

@Old_Goat wow, that sounds unsettling to say the least. I tested both the Single, and Dual from Eclipse, and had pretty good results. I noticed a flavor increase compared to the single coil.

The FIRST thing that popped into my head was the coils, as that could easily cause the issues. Lack of flavor oculd be coil placement, etc., but a sour taste ?? You’ve got me on that one. Water / condensation on the inside, on a new sealed box ?? Something doesn’t sound right …

@Old_Goat my Base Camp’s are split here on ELR, just in case you want to reference anything here …

Here is a picture of what I got in the box.
You can clearly see what I mean by condensation.
I while ago I got a Vaperesso Target 200 sent to me with an iTank. The same thing happened there, not not at this scale. I don’t like Sub-Ohm tanks anyway so I didn’t even try the iTank. I simply gifted it to someone in need. I think it has something to do with shipping form over seas.

@Old_Goat that sure looks used to me mate.

It had a plastic wrap on it. Looked sealed when I got it. But you never know, people are dodgy. It was the last one in the shop and I have not seen them anywhere else since. I need to get this thing back to its original state so that I can get the most out of it.

Can you post a picture of your build?
And what wire type, wraps, internal diameter and cotton used may help diagnose too.

Sure, here you go.

I’m using 2x Alien Claptons, 3mm ID. 3x 26AWG core with 36AWG wrap. Ni80.

I have gotten this before, my theory is it’s an airflow problem
some of your e-juice is basically boiling, producing by-products and off flavours

if rebuilding dosen’t work it may be defective or just bad design
can you return this abomination?

Builds look good, and wicks. I mean, I could see reduced flavor (or great flavor) being resultant to poor coils, or def. airflow hitting the coils, but I’m still hung on the sour-ness. @Old_Goat have you tried different coils, or heights, spacing ?

Different coils, different cotton and different juice.
On a side note, I had something similar with a different tank, when I opened it, I found rust. It was a second hand tank and was not well looked after. A good clean solved that problem. That’s why I always do a deep clean on any new tanks. But this one does not show any signs of rust at all.

Funny you should say that, as just last night, I broke out and older mod/RDA, and it was funky, despite being fully cleaned before I shelved it. Same same here.

When I am not getting the flavor saturation I expect I try going down in coil size, in your case 2.5mm, improves af around the coils which improves flavor for me.

As above your build looks good.
And said above sometimes un vapourised juice can taste a bit funky.

It might just be the picture but one coil looks more bedded in than the other.
By this i mean when you gently heat the dry coils to get them to glow evenly to remove hot spots, ni80 tends to take on a bluey tinge.
One of your coils looks more bluey than the other.
This could mean theres hot spots and or some parts of the coils not heating properly which may be the cause.

Id try a rewick making sure the coils are glowing evenly.

My first thought would be coil placement. From my personal experience wicking, especially rta’s for the first time, the lack of flavor, or any other problems is my error in coil placement and it’s the first thing I check. The cotton, too tight though the coils, can lead to dry hits or lack of flavor.

As for sour taste, I got nothing. Is there any ultem parts?

I came here go say this, but it definitely looks used.

I gave the Eclipse Dual another go with a full clean and fresh coils. The good news: I managed to get rid of the sour note. Turns out there was a small spot of rust under the build deck, which I suspect was the culprit.

The cotton still needs some time to break in, but the flavor… well, it’s not bad. It’s just not what I expected. Compared to my single-coil Eclipse, the dual feels underwhelming. Honestly, it reminds me more of a Dead Rabbit—decent, but nowhere near the mind-blowing flavor I get from the single-coil version.

Am I being too harsh on the dual coil? Should I be setting my expectations lower? All the reviews I’ve seen put it above its single-coil sibling, but my experience has been the complete opposite. I’ll give it a bit more time to see if it improves, but right now, it feels like a letdown.

The single-coil Eclipse is a flavor beast—the dual coil? Not even in the same league so far.

@Old_Goat we all taste things differently. You have to go with what you taste, as opposed to other people. I personally, having tested the single coil, right before the dual, did notice an increase in flavor when moving from the single, to the dual.

Without trying more coils, and different heights, to change the airflow, that may just be how it feels/tastes to you.

You make a great point, @SessionDrummer —taste is always personal, and no two setups or preferences are the same. I do think it’s worth experimenting more before giving up on the Eclipse dual entirely.

In my single coil Eclipse, I’ve been running a custom coil that comes out to 0.11 ohms. I know that’s lower resistance than what most people run for single coils, but I like to crank up the power and get that intense, saturated flavor. Maybe that’s where the magic lies for me.

I’m starting to wonder if I need to bump up the wattage with the dual coil to really bring it to life. I’ve been keeping things on the conservative side so far, but it might be time to let it rip and see if that makes the flavor pop.

I’ll also play around with coil height a bit more and see how it affects the airflow and flavor. Any tips or sweet spots you’ve found with the Eclipse dual?

Thanks for the nudge to keep tinkering—this tank might still surprise me.

Adjusting the voltage could make a lot of difference.
